Thunderbolts been blown back!

With all these dual core 4g phones, does the Thunderbolt stand a chance on Verizon. Hopefully it has something up its sleeve to make it last. LG Revolution(Verizon version of Optimus 2X), Motorola Droid Bionic and more that i dont remember seems like it'll get the most attention. No offense or anything intended. Just stating my opinion =D.

I think the dual core phones are going to have battery problems right out the gate, plus Motorola's software is buggy. The only thing I wish the Thunderbolt had was HDMI out for viewing on hd widescreen tv's. I also think the new snapdragon processor is in this phone.

LG Revolution doesn't have a dual core.

In fact the only Verizon dual core so far is the Bionic. I'm not the biggest fan of Moto, so not sure I'll get any of them.

I thought the same thing, but Tegra 2 has amazing battery life in spite of 2200 to 2500 Quadrant scores and great performance to back the scores up.

I have a Tegra 2 device.

We'll see how Moto does with it, I for one will not get one after owning multiple Moto devices, im sticking with HTC. I have been EXTREMELY happy with my Incredible, I trust HTC with this new phone. Cant wait to get one...

and htc has good battery life? ha dual core is supposed to help with battery life htc and their battery life suck

I dont have any problems with battery life. The Thunderbolt single core with more ram will be faster and have better battery life than the dual core with less ram. I'm willing to bet on it. Plus like I said before, if you want a buggy software phone, get a Motorola.

yeah but the 1400mah battery and htc's past battery issues are something to consider. Dual cores are supposed to have a big increase on battery life

They addressed battery life during the CES conference and said something along the lines of "We are aware of past issues and have worked to address the issue."

Whether or not it meets our expectations remains to be seen. However, since nobody has been able to use one of these and report back yet, I don't think we can just assume the battery life will be crap.

More ram increasing battery life? Don't know bout that one. HTC has acknowledged themselves that multiple devices they released this past year (Incredible and Evo included) had very substantial battery life and charging issues. Dual cores have already been stated to increase battery life by Nvidia (makers of the Tegra line). The thunderbolt will have the same, and in other cases less, ram than the upcoming dual cores (the announced Moto for AT&T is going to have 1GB) and I can assure you it will not be faster than these devices. Thunderbolt is inferior in just about every way to the upcoming phones that will follow it within 2 months. Again, it is not a crap phone, HTC just failed to move forward to keep Verizon on the forefront with other carriers. Even the LG Revolution was gimped with similar specs as the Thunderbolt, while it's siblings on other carriers got dual cores and WiDi. Verizon is destined for a long time to be just behind other carriers.

Yea, why is Verizon always behind on everything???

What is dual core?

Dual core means that there are 2 processors sandwiched together. So, in theory, you get double the processing power and better multi-tasking implementation. It takes quite a bit of time for developers to adapt to coding for them though, so even after the first hardware comes out it will take a bit before the software catches up.

Dude do yourself a favor and don't be a brand loyalist. This is what every company wants and they are not going to feel bad making a device that is crap to sell to people. HTC is not the superior phone maker out there, every company has its pros and cons its best to just sit back watch the reviews and then choose the best device for yourself. Heavy EVO fanboys will never admit the battery life sucks, but everyone knows it does. In fairness to all the other manufacturers out there HTC does not appear to be dominating anything this year.

o ok i see thanks

I am about as far as a brand loyalist as it gets, thanks for the advice though

I had good luck with my Incredible and what I see with the Thunderbolt is exactly what I want. Ill sit back and watch everybody get these new dual core Moto phones and laugh at there "ZOMG BATTERY LIFE SUCKS AND MY SOFTWARE IS BUGGY" threads. But wait, manufactures are claiming better battery life so were all good right? :p

while i was initially unimpressed with the thunderbolt, I am equally impressed with verizon's other new phones. It seems the technology for LTE is not at a point that allows it to play nicely with dual core yet. Only one I see with a dual core out of the 4 released is the bionic, and we don't know for sure if thats Tegra2 or OMAP.... also the bionic has a few specs that are less than the Thunderbolt, 5 mpixel camera, VGA FFC and no DLNA.... lets not forget the major wins the thunderbolt has over every other 4g LTE phone being released. The ONLY thing it doesnt stack up to with the Bionic is its lack of dual core, but compare it to the Sammy and LG offerings, and its right up there even with a few extras.

Plus, since I'm a dev, knowing the history with qualcom, and the fact that a majority of the phones out there still are qualcom devices, that makes me very enthusiastic for a quick root and major dev opportunities for the thunderbolt.

Lets not also forget that the evo and now inc battery charging issues have been fixed by the dev community, including myself. From my perspective, since I'm tthrowing out the Sammy and LG since they have nothing to offer over the thunderbolt, here's how I compare the Bionic and Thunderbolt:

Bionic:
Encrypted bootloader, best we can hope for is bootstrapped root and a few custom ROMs.
Small dev community.
No chance at a custom kernel, so should we have any of these hardware issues (bad battery life etc) the dev community cant fix them
Thunderbolt:
Probably very similar if not identical bootloader to G2/MT4G, both fully cracked with S-OFF.
HTC still has a very large dev community.
99 % apps work with qualcom devices whereas more like a general 80 if you're lucky on others.
No motoblur... just eww... personal opinion (not that I'm a fan of sense either, I use AOSP)
Custom kernels (including one by me) to fix any annoyances.

Seems like a pretty clear choice to me.

I predict that unless they can work some mjo with the kernel, this device will suck battery quicker than the Incredible did during its early days. Bet on it.

Bigger display
Faster chipset that is not dual core
4G

Perhaps the 4G can be turned off?

I for one will not go back to Motorola. Came from OG Droid, loved the openness of the device, and then they introduced Enfuse (encrypted bootloaders) with the X and every subsequent phone.

We can pick apart specs all day long and then some because there is always better technology around the corner that will make us dissatisfied with what's out now or what is just coming out that isn't as good as we thought it was.

That's not to say that we shouldn't have an idea of what we want. I, for one, want dual core due to performance benefits. But ultimately, my decision will rest on whether I can obtain true ownership of my phone by rooting and running custom ROMs and kernels. For this reason, it's doubtful that I will ever go back to Motorola unless they reverse course on bootloader encryption.

That said, I think the Thunderbolt will be an outstanding device for the typical user who just wants a fast phone and internet. For that matter, you can game very well with single-core processors... my Incredible does just fine with games. I think it's us geeks who obsess over every little detail, want every ounce of performance, and who are rarely completely satisfied (for very long)

I have an Inc too. If you love openess, get a gTablet. Most open device evah and Tegra 2.

Keep in mind that you have LTE, a 4.3" screen, and only 1400 mAh battery. The first two are potential battery hogs and the last does not give hope of mitigating the effects of the first two.

I highly doubt the Thunderbolt will be substantially better in terms of battery life than, say, the Incredible. I don't get why mfgrs don't tout usage in terms of real-world scenarios:

"Lasts a full day on a single charge with GPS, bluetooth, and constant data connection."

Or something like that.

I said I wasnt gonna do the specs post anymore, just wanted to clarify some stuff...

MOTODEV > Products > DROID BIONIC by Motorola, XT865

It has DLNA, it has a Tegra 2 dual core, an 8mp camera, ( yea I know mega pixel, shmega pixel..lol).

The higher screen res, hdmi mirroring (which is something I wanted badly ever since the Galaxy S line came out, some of their phones do TV Out mirroring) it ships with a 1900 mAh battery..

When you say the only thing it has over the Thunderbolt is dual core...thats not technically correct. Maybe thats the only thing you care about that it has over the Thunderbolt...and you are right about the FFC...:)

The bootloader...until someone actually tries to unlock it....we dont know if it will be locked like the X.

The Thunderbolt will be another nice phone by HTC. They are just going to be coming in late to the dual core race. Maybe.

Even tho I'm not into HTC phones, I wanna see some more dual core chips out to do some real comparisons with the Tegra 2. I do hope HTC and Qualcomm have some dual core chips ready this year.
