Time for Upgrade - I reckon "Its Epic Time"

B4 you all bust my chops telling me the Nexus is out in a couple of days, trust me Im fully aware. But the 199.00 price tag after upgrade credit is just more than the wallet can take. (Still not making what I was, but at least Im working again) We are still struggling in the Engineering & Construction Field here in STL.

Plus I want to take advantage of the 100.00 instant rebate they are offering online b4 it expires.

Anyways, I have a series of questions about the Epic:

So far in my original assessment of the Evo vs Epic the Epic seemed to suit me better. But im open to hear from current Epic Owners

So what is this rooting I keep hearing about that will speed up the phone and extend battery life.

Are there any known issues I should be aware of. (Current Moment owner)

Overall suggestions to heighten my ownership experience with the Epic?

The Moment was my first Android, but I keep hearing its a dog and I will be amazed at the difference with the Epic of the Evo

Thanks in advance for your input.

I prefer the EPIC over the EVO for the following reasons. Better Screen. S-AMOLED looks way better. The EPIC has a GPU, Graphics Processor Unit that helps with games and other graphics.
I like the larger physical size screen of the EVO and the slim design, aka no keyboard but i used an EVO since launch day and a few months ago i went to an EPIC.
I am rooted with a rom from ACS called Frozen 1.1.0.
Definately helped with battery life.
As far as answering your ROM / Rooting quesions. They have been answered in many places on the forums. I think original EPICS were plagued with many software glitches but i think EC05 release. 2.2.1 has fixed most of them.
They are both good devices. It will boil down your preferences.
If your not into a lot of graphical intense programs and dont want a keyboard go with an EVO. I also had the 3500mAh battery with door and that helped greatly.
I never noticed how washed out the EVO display was untill i got some EPICS at my office. Now i know.

If you're moving to either phone from a Moment, you'll be amazed either way. I ditched my Moment for the Epic about three months ago. Despite both being Samsung products, the Epic is much more reliable, especially now that Android 2.2 is available.

If you're already used to the Moment, the "look and feel" of the Epic is very similar. It is a rather painless move from one to the other.

I chose the Epic over the Evo, mainly for the keyboard. I don't really get along well with touchscreen keyboards. However, I've noticed the Epic has a tendency to miss keypresses at random, especially if you're too fast on the keys.

The screen on the Epic is smaller than the Evo, but as bigwrigg already mentioned, the quality of the screen definitely makes up for the reduced real estate.

Depending on what apps you have running, expect to kill a battery quickly. Despite using Juice Defender (which has made a big improvement in my battery life), I still purchased a second battery from Sprint, which includes a carrying case that doubles as an external charger. If you're buying from the Sprint Store directly, get this when you buy the phone, and use the accessory discount.

Bottom line: A Samsung device always comes with its headaches, but despite that, the Epic still gets my vote over the Evo.

...then give the Moment a proper burial. :)

With all this talk about juice defender i think i am going to try it on my device.
I am rooted with ACS Frozen 1.1.0 and that alone has doubled my stock battery life. Cant wait to see what this does..

I went from an lg vu920 to this phone. Absolutely no comparison. From barely any apps-you could say just about none-to android. Mine came with froyo.
I tried juicedefender for a week and upgraded to ultimate, wanted the quick toggle for 3g on off. I love this phone, would be hard to go back to a basic phone. We are tied to tech.
I had 2.78x result on juice defender ult. I don't have wifi-I have dial up so the fast web on here is great-that's why I like the 3g toggle widget w/jdu.
The screen is beautiful. I have a soft microfiber cloth & some non alchohol screen cleaner, didn't put a screen protecter yet, have a leather case to clip to my pocket and a zippered soft/padded pouch to keep it in.
The camera takes superb photos with many customizable options.
You'd love this phone. I am conditioning the battery-using until the phone shuts off then charging, except for a couple of times-the battery is doing well, seems to be getting better and better. Juice defender ultimate is great, well worth the small price.
