Time to Move On

Oh now where do I begin. I've have this OG Droid since Christmas of 09. Showed it to my roomate who was rocking the iPhone 3GS and was liike, dude, my phone craps on your phone. Thus our Android vs. iOS argument started. Months go by and the D1 finally gets rooted, meanwhile I barely even know what jailbreak iOS means. So I do my reading and what not, and decide to take the plunge. I thought, what the heck, why not? Rooted it the old fashioned way, using the terminal emulator to put in a bunch of code, and voila! Nifty little superuser app shows up in my apps, which that in itself felt like the coolest thing ever. More months go by and now I'm installing custom kernels, ROMs, all sorts of these goodies making my phone the hotness that I could show off to all my Apple-fanboy friends. Fastforward to today and now I'm still rocking the exact same phone, except for a new battery... got drunk one night and somehow the back casing came off along with my battery 0.o

Anyways, now I got 2.3.4 thanks to Chevy and his oh-so-great ROM developement skills. But, unfortunately, the phone is starting to show its age. For one, I have that annoying headphone jack issue where even the slightest touch with will give me all sorts of static when listening to my music. On top of that my battery life has just been going out the window, regardless of what sort of kernel I flash on there. And Gingerbread in general just doesnt play too nicely with my Droid, Maps/Navigation always goes wonky, constant force closing, etc. Though when it does work it works beautifully. But, I still need a change.

What I realllyyyy want is for the damn SGSII to come out to the states so I can go on about my merry self holding that beautiful piece of hardware in my hands. But who knows when that'll ever happen (damn you Samsung/American Carriers/whoever is to blame for the long wait). Basically all I really want is dual core, 4G takes a back seat for me personally. But I was just looking at the HTC Sensation and that looks pretty neat with Sense 3.0 and all. Besides those two, are there any phones that you guys would recommend? Oh, and also, unlocked bootloader is a plus!

Are you wanting to stay with VZW? QWERTY?

Droid 3 is dual core 3G and should be out early July. However, it has Blur, and will most likely have a decently locked bootloader. It's also rumored to have GB out of the box.

If you're open to leaving VZW, I'd have gotten the Sensation, cause I love Sense, and HTC just announced that they will be unlocking bootloaders.

DX2 is also dual core, but I find it to not be as much an improvement over the original to merit much hype.

You've also got the Moto Atrix 4G on AT&T, and the Samsung G2x on T-mo, but I don't know too much about these phones.

I agree that the Droid, although less that 2 years old, is quite dated. I loved my Droid, but with all of the high end apps and ROMs coming out, the phone simply could not keep up with it's limited RAM and processor. It was time to move on and have my Droid respectfully succeeded. With an abundance of RAM and Qualcomms latest snapdragon on my Inc 2, my new phone is just that.

Good luck picking a new phone!

Yeah, I'd say I'm willing to leasve behind VZW and QWERTY keyboards. I'm also up for leaving motorola nin general. With their crappy motoBlur and locked bootloaders, its time I tried a different manufacturer. Hmm, maybe I will get the Sensation, but I would really like a non 4G for the cheaper data plan.

Yeah, if you are going to take a plunge, I'd do it soon, or else just buy the phone outright. It appears that Verizon is going to be raising their data plan options, and eliminating the unlimited data plan.

I too have been waiting for the SGS2 to drop before I retire my Droid. Nothing else has really caught my eye, or had other issues causing me to stay away from the phone.

Apparently those of us with current unlimited plans WILL be grandfathered in, 3G and 4G. That's the way the press releases are reading, anyway... whether that comes out written in stone on July 7th remains to be seen. If THAT'S the case, I will happily hang with Big Red and the Samsung Function (provided that it's still rootable once Verizon's done tinkering with it).

Amen

Yeah the whole tiered data plan thing sucks, but even if they do try to tell you they won't Grandfather you in, just wait. I was origionally with Altell and when they were bought by big Red, I thought great better signal and the OG Droid was just about to drop, so I wouldn't have to switch providers (also nice as my work gets discounts on verizon). So after all the hooplah of "you now belong to Verizon" I go in to see about getting my droid, and discounts. NOPE. Would have to get a new Verizon plan as they weren't allowing any Altell plans to be continued, no 11 friends (had been with them long enough that they gave me an extra free number to call), nothing, and wanted a WHOLE lot more than what I was paying for my current service... Well to make a long story short(er) I gave the rep the finger and waited a few months, (till may 2010 to be exact), and finally couldn't wait anylonger (wifes phone was barely holding on). Walked into the store and was ready to bite the bullet and BAM, they said sure I could be grandfathered in. Sometimes patience wins out in the end, and I'm not one that needs the newest thing the minute it comes out, hence why I don't have an iCrap. I don't get all bling eyed on the shiny.

I hear ya. My OG has def seen better days (which is why it's replacement is on it's way to my door). I think we all feel that way.

If changing carriers isn't a big deal, then I'd def explore your options. Go to each of the big 4's coverage maps and see what it's like in your area. If that's not a factor, time to start checking pricing plans.

I got to play with my friend's Sensation the day it dropped, and I've got to say I'm very impressed. If I were on T-Mobile and in need of a phone today, I'd get it in a heartbeat. I don't know what type of battery life can be expected, but there wasn't anything about the phone I didn't like. And I really liked what Sense 3.0 had to offer. Do keep in mind though that more and more videos are starting to come out comparing the Sensation directly to the SGS2 and it seems the S2 is kicking butt.

If you don't care about 4G and def don't want to pay extra for it, but you def gotta have dual core, and you want to get away from Motorola (as the Bionic and D3 are expecting to have dual core), then I think the most logical solution is to wait for the SGS2 on Verizon. It shouldn't be much longer before it comes out, really, and you SHOULDN'T (big emphasis on shouldn't) have to worry about tiered data. Also your contract doesn't end till December, so you'd be paying an ETF if you left before then.

But if you have a way out of that or don't care about it (but if you don't wanna pay for 4G, I can't see you wanting to pay an ETF), then by all means, jump on T-Mobile's Sensation. Keep in mind, also, that the SGS2 is going to all 4 carriers (the only one without a confirmed name is T-Mobile, actually).
