Time to root my Hero

atodman

Newbie
so I have had my Hero for a while now, I notice it isn't working as well as one would like. The phone is slow, I ternet and just general operations seem slow. I can upgrade if I want, but none of the new phone appeal to me, as I recently got a Xoom and do most of my surfing on that.

So the big question is where do I start when it comes to rooting? My phone is up to date with all of Sprints updates, and the last time I checked the rooting software wasn't set up for the more recent Sprint updates.

Thanks in advance for help.

Aaron

I would start here http://androidforums.com/sprint-hero-all-things-root/317354-trying-root-but-issue.html

Both links will be very helpful. If you need any specific help I will guide you in the right direction. And the rooting programs still work with the most recent updates. I know because I unrooted earlier this week and upgraded to the most recent sprint build to get my pri updated. Then used z4root to reroot and it worked perfectly.

Correct, download the Z4Root app I have posted in that thread and you will be rooted in minutes

Thanks, so what I'm getting from the first link is I can root my phone from my phone, without a computer?

After that from what I understand I want to back my phone up? I'm looking to install the gingerbread rom

Just tried to download the z4root to my phone, it downloaded but when I run it it says it can't find and application to open it

First you need to install a recovery image. After you root download rom manager and flash clockwork recovery. Then boot into recovery and make a backup.

Do you have a file explorer installed? Ie astro or estrongs

No I never needed one my phone do I need that to run the apk file? On my xoom they just run.

OK got installed and now rooting...

Yes to install you need a file explorer. In my first post in the the first thread I posted I explain all of this.

Z4root has said rebooting for five minutes, how long does this normally take? I guess I'm asking when it restarts how do u know it is rooted?

If it hangs just pull the battery. When you power up see if the super user app is in your app list. If it is your rooted.

Power the phone off and reboot, you should be rooted

After about five or six minutes, if it is still saying that, just pull the battery if it is frozen, otherwise power off and restart you handset. Go back into Z4Root and if it says you are rooted, then you are done with that part, if not, press "Permanent Root" again.

After the above is done, download ROM Manager from the Android Market and then flash ClockworkMod Recovery. When that is done, let us know and we can walk you through the backing up and flashing procedure, which is relatively simple.

You can also use an app installer from the market to install your APK's

No need to pull the battery guys, simple reboot the phone, will do the same

I said if it was frozen. I have had a few freeze during this process, which is harmless.

A quick battery pull is fine in that case. Otherwise, like you said, power down.

Come on bring on the rooters while we are all here, LOL, we are just missing the Cat

You need to decide on a ROM that you want. I would recommend the AOSP Android 2.3 ROM. It is available here, so grab the ROM and the GApps: http://androidforums.com/sprint-her...od-aosp-2-3-3-cm7-gingerbread-04-21-11-a.html .

Copy those to your microSD card. Boot into recovery, and make a Nandroid backup with Backup and Restore. After that you need to wipe cache and data, then go into Advanced and wipe Dalvik cache, and finally go into Mounts and Storage and format boot, cache, data, and system. After all of that is done, then flash the ROM, and the GApps. You can then reboot and get to setting everything back up. Let us know if you need more help.

You mount your phone and put the GB ROM 4/29 not from the OP, http://androidforums.com/2627985-post836.html, and the Gapps on the root of your SD card, then boot into recovery, then do a Nandroid back up, then do a full wipe, then install zip from SD card and install your GB Rom, once done back out and then install Gapps, once done reboot, sign in to Gmail and set your phone up

So now what do I do? Do I need do get a from before I do the nandroid backup?

Im Doing titanium backup while the rom finish downloading. don you mentioned in your last post gb rom 4/29 not from op? What's that u lost me. I want the new on 2.3.4?

2.3.4 has not been released yet, OP means original post, I did not edit the OP because AOSP did not post it in the forums, only on his twitter account, so i simply added to a new post which is the link I gave you, that is the latest release
