Tip - "HOW DO I" Settings with Android

The Evo is my first Android phone. I have been playing around with it for a couple of days and really like the phone and Android.

I noticed on the upper left corner of the home screen is a little indicator that appears to show the status of downloads. Based on the status indicator, it appears I have a download cued up but it doesn't come (i.e. not getting the little check box when the download is actually completed).

Is there a way to check the status of downloads and cancel them if one is stuck for some reason?

You should be able to open the market and click on menu/downloads, or click on the download button and see all downloaded and pending items. From there you can click on the item to cancel or retry.

Howdy, I've got a quick question about the camera.

Is there any way to make one of the side buttons activate the shutter for the camera? I was trying to take a picture of my lady and me and it was a pain to try and press the on-screen shutter button.

Cheers,
Ian

Not that I am aware of but there is a self timer you can set up. That might help ya. With the camera open hit the tab to the left. Click the hears in the left corner. Scroll till you find self timer.

Ok so Android has some crazy options is what i'm learning fast with my new EVO. Is there a way to make it so that Facebook doesn't dump each and every friend's birthday into my calender? I'm fine with the ones I have in my phone book already but I really don't want all of them.

Does anyone now how I can silence emails but have a notification sound for texts?

Well that depends. Text msg do use a separate notification so it can be done. You can turn off exchange and pop mail from within the internal mail app. Once there click menu/settings/notification settings. Uncheck the box for notification sound. For GMail, hit menu/settings and Uncheck email notifications.

Thanks, I suppose I should have realized that lol. Cheers.

I am going to have to bump this one. I don't use facebook and have no clue on this one. Anyone else know?

Thanks, I should have mentioned that I had already done this and it shows all the downloads I've done are installed. But I still have the indicator in the uppper left hand corner of the home page with the downward-facing arrow pointing down to a single horizontal line, which seems to mean there is a download either pending or in progress. I also have two indicators with checkmarks above 3 grayed-out horizontal lines which seems to mean completed downloads.

So when you pull down the the notification bar all the items show installed? If thats the case then they are all done. You can just hit "Clear" in the upper right hand corner and the icon will go away. If the arrow is moving then the download or install is still in progress. If its stopped is more of a check mark saying its done.

how do i get my nicknames for contacts to be displayed on my device?

Nicknames were done on gmail account.

It seems there is no place for that on the EVO. Looks like the contact card on the phone doesn't support it. I will keep looking for a way though.

Only if it has its own widget. Well you could clear the defaults of the internal browser under menu/settings/applications/Manage Apps. Not sure which one it is. Look for Browser select it and clear defaults. Then you might be able to set dolphin as default browser and see if the book marks widget will use dolphin. I highly doubt it but it might be worth a try.

I Tried this and it worked for me. I installed the dolphin browser and set it as my default browser. All my bookmark widgets pointed the bookmarks to dolphin.

Is it possible to have a different wallpaper on the lockscreen from your home screen? Also I have a folder that I named GAMES. How do I put my game apps in there? Is it even possible?

1. Wallpaper? = Seems that is not available in this build of 2.1. In others I have used you could. If you or anyone else finds this to not be true let me know. As of right now it seems the same wallpaper for the home screen works for the lock screen as well.

2. Games Folder? = You created the folder on one of your home screens correct? If so make sure your focus is on the home screen with the folder, bring up the all programs window (up arrow in bottom left) and find the game you want to add. Long press on the game and hold. You will see your games folder and home screen. drag the game to the games folder.

DONE

Yes, they all show installed. But I don't see anywhere to hit "clear" in the upper right hand corner.

Also, the download indicator (the downward arrow above the horizontal line) is stopped, the arrow is not moving. But there is no check mark saying its done. That's why I thought perhaps there was a download queued up but not executing. But again, when pressing the download page in market, all the downloads on the list say they have installed.

Pull down the notification bar that shows all apps are installed. Look for the clear button on that page to the right of the Sprint Logo.

My guess would be no considering the main point of linking contacts with Facebook is to link your contacts with your friends. I doubt there is a way to link to someone you aren't a friend with because of this.

OK...I have one for you (Android noob). Seems like I don't have a "favorites" widget. Any ideas? Also, I was wondering how to "star" someone. Can't seem to find it in the directions or anywhere else. Thoughts?

sirslayer, just wanna say thanks a ton for being our very own evo help desk...you don't have to do this, so i truly appreciate you taking the time and energy to do so...you have helped me and i'm sure everyone else in here tremendously in learning the ways around the android os....thanks again

I second this, thanks SirSlayer
