Tip - "HOW DO I" Settings with Android

How do I turn on text message alert? I have vibrate but no sound.

While in the messaging app, select menu/settings. Then look for notification alert. Make sure its selected. Your notification volume could also be turned down. From the main home screen select menu/settings/sound, select volume, make sure notifications is turned up.

Newbie with an Evo. Is there a way to configure it to harrass for missed calls, texts, etc? or maybe an app that will do the same? My windows mobile had an app for it that would allow you to configure reminders for missed text/calls/voicemails/emails. It was really nice because we use our phones as pagers via SMS and when I was on call I would set the SMS to an annoying sound and keep it would keep going off every five minutes until I read it. Very effective to make you pay attention!

Another calendar related item. Is there a way to set the free/busy when sending calendar notifications via Activesync? Again, another windows mobile thing and I understand the activesync with android probably won't have the level of integration that windows mobile had with exchange, but i'm sure with enough feedback and time it will surpass it.

First off welcome to the forums

1. Harassing Messages. Not sure about missed calles alerts but for messaging I would check out handcent SMS. There are a bazillion options for changing notifications, and its really customizable.

2. Calendar Issue: Not that I am aware of....I know with google calendar there are options when choosing to accept or reject a meeting.

Hi, I have a sprint HTC hero. For the stock message application, how do I stop it from showing a text message on the lock screen. If you turn off the notifications, it also does not vibrate to let you know you have a text message.

For the EVO (what this Thread is dedicated too) there is an option to remove the notifications. When in the messaging app hit menu/settings and look under received notifications. There is an option there for vibrate as well. If the stock app still doesn't do that you want it too then I would suggest switching to Handcent SMS. Its far better then the standard messaging app thats offered with android.

What is the BEST app for the htc evo to kill apps and help save battery? I've lowered my phones brightness and disabled other options i was told but still my battery goes down a bit fast. At best buy the app advance task killer was put on it but sucks to have to go to it on ur own to kill everything. If its the best one ill put it back on?

*I read I can buy a better battery for my phone i guess it'll last longer or something...is that true?

Well this question is a loaded one. Read the thread in my signature about task killers. In my opinion no task killer is needed and may only seem like its helping the battery. The fact is apps that the OS thinks it needs will continue to re-open thus using more battery to kill them. Anyways read the thread you will get the idea. Also shame on Best Buy for recommending that.

Ok the best way to get better battery life is to root and use a custom rom that has been optimized. Its what I have done and now I get 2-3 days with light use, 2 days with med use, and 1 day with heavy use. If you decide you want to root then PM me and I will point you in the right direction for easy rooting and flashing a custom rom.

Yes if u can give me that information that'd be great. I just hate to have to charge it more than once or twice a day. No no. Think it be best to email me if u can plz. It'd be faster to reply. Sanltinydancer@yahoo.com.

Ok I have been searching and reading until my brain is mushy. But anyway, whenever I enable hotspot, mobile network disables. So neither my phone nor laptop will connect to internet. Am I doing something wrong?

Are you talking about sprints hotspot? Or wireless tether (requires root). Of you are talking about Sprints hotspot software, do you have the $30 add-on for your Sprint account?. I know I am asking obvious questions but not having the phone in font of me these questions come to mind.

Will read up on rooting. Hope its as easy as most say.

Root:
1. First do this:
[GUIDE] One Click How to Root the EVO with Unrevoked 3.21 - xda-developers

2. Switch to this recovery (you can use Rom Manager (download from the market) to flash this recovery after you have gained root.
[Recovery] [28-August-2010] RA-evo-v1.8.0 - xda-developers

3. After thats done you can pick any ROM that you like. I highly recommend Fresh though. His roms are stable fast and have great battery life.
[ROM] 10/28/10 | Fresh Evo 3.4.0.1 | New OTA Base + MMS Tweaks + App Updates - xda-developers

I've tried searching, and couldn't find the answer.

Is it possible to make an appointment occur every other week? I can find how to set it to weekly, monthly, etc, but I really need this option...

WOOT! First Post! Welcome man.

Ok, on the phone I have not seen a way to do this..... but....if you are using google calendar then you are not out of luck. If you log onto google calendar on your computer and set up the appointment there you will be able to set up appointments every 2 weeks on whatever day you want. This should pass to the phone.

Hope this helps.

Bummer. Thanks for your help though!

Edit, already have another question. I've got a few apps that I want removed (that I added) but when I click-hold and drag them to "remove" they don't go away. I'm sure it's something easy...

Did you install them from the market? If so open market click menu/downloads and you should see a list of apps that are installed. You can click on them here to remove the app completely.

On the mail thing. Was it for Google mail? or another mail server like yahoo or outlook?
