Root Titanium Backup 101

Extreme Android User
A lot of people have Titanium installed, but don't know how to use it.

(Titanium Backup requires your device to be rooted.)

Install Titanium Backup, then make a file backup....

From: TB - HOWTOs : Titanium Backup - Wiki

How to make your first backup:

  • Verify that Titanium Backup has started without warning and that your busybox is OK
  • Click the Backup/Restore tab
  • Click Menu (the button), Batch
  • Click "Backup all user apps"
  • Let it run, then go back
  • Individually backup the system data you want. That is most green-colored items. This will be bookmarks, call log, calendar, launcher, WiFi, etc.
  • Now your backups are in the "TitaniumBackup" directory on your SD card.

How to restore your backups on a new phone, or after installing a ROM (if you wiped your phone):

  • Download Titanium Backup from Market
  • Click the Backup/Restore tab
  • Click Menu (the button), Batch
  • Click "Restore missing apps with data"
  • Unselect any apps you do not want restored
  • Reboot your phone
  • It's done ! The only thing you may have to adjust is usually your wallpaper/widgets.
Titanium is free, but the Pro version gives you more power, like more than one backup and the ability to freeze system apps (aka bloatware).

I would avoid restore "all missing apps + system data". Last time I did it, sync icon wouldn't go away until I wiped data. The better way is restore missing apps, and then for system apps restore data one by one.

What I have trouble with is changing what I already have backed up to a new backup... not sure how to explain it... the first time I backed up I backed up with a ton of apps, many of which I don't use anymore. I want to make a new backup with all those apps gone. Now everytime I flash a rom and restore backups, it has everything from the first time I backed up. Do I have to go through one by one and deselect the ones I don't want the next time I backup?

Or you could delete all your old backups (or copy old back ups to different folder if you ever want to restore them), then back up your current apps and you all set ;)

Honestly I could have sworn I deleted all my old backups and it still restored my old apps. I know I deleted all my backup data because my LPP settings were gone. But every time I flash a rom and restore apps, I get back all these digital clock and battery widgets I deleted.

Delete/rename titanium back up folder with root explorer :) It will create a new one when you'll try back up next time :)

I also have this problem. I too tried deleting everything in the Titanium Backup folder, but I swear old apps still appear in Titanium Backup to restore.

Doing this reset the backups to none; however, the old apps were still listed. So Titanium Backup still keeps "track" of all the apps. Going to Menu, More, Reload App does reset the apps to only what is currently on the device. My data and app elements under batch mode went from 200+ to 145 following the Reload App command. :)

Both AppBrain and the Market do a back up and if you never removed the appear from those accounts they could be syncing.:

So you did this instead of deleting the backups, or you did this and also deleted the backups?

I renamed the folder TitaniumBackup.old, then did the Reload App command. So now I have a TitaniumBackup.old folder and a TitaniumBackup folder.

I suppose one could make a backup folder for each rom one loads, it would come in handy especially when going between Blur and Blurless/AOSP roms.

Not if you wipe data when installing new ROM:)

Ok, It sounds crazy but should I get this? Google sync's my contacts and my App's, plus I use Apps 2 SD, Pic's, .Apk's, and important .Zip's are on my root if I need them. How does this benefit me?

Contacts sync by Google, it's given. As far as apps its much more easier and faster to back up/restore with titanium. In addition you can restore your apps data (angry birds score for example :)), or even better restore your system apps data (browser bookmarks, alarms, bluetooth devices, wifi networks etc)

Thats a "DEAL SEALER". Im hittn Thanks on that! DLing now.
Sooooo If I SBF. And reload Liberty I just wait for TB to DL from the market and restore?

I keep the TB apk on my sdcard so that's the first thing I install, then let it restore everything. But I don't restore from the market, so that might work for you if that's what you do.

?ion how often should I backup? Is there a process that will just backup new things I have done?

There are options to schedule back ups, but I think its available on PRO only. I have setup schedule to back up my apps plus system data three times a week, and keep last 4 back ups.
You have quite a few options there: back up everything, back up new apps, redo back ups etc

While in Backup/Restore, press the Menu key, select Batch. There will be options to backup everything, new apps, older apps, etc. I believe you can schedule TB to automatically backup as well.

Edit: whoops, a little slow on the response. :o
