Root To flash a rom, or not to flash a rom

Ok so i have been rooted now for over two weeks and i have been trying to decide if i should flash a ROM or not. I have no problems with the stock set up, what are the advantages to flashing a new ROM over keeping the stock ROM other than appearance and the design layouts? Is there any specific feature of flashing a ROM that i am missing out on?

A lot of roms have performance tweaks and the new ones use a different version that fixes 4g issues, etc. My personal favorite is Das Bamf.

Flash. You will get better battery life with a custom rom that removes sense.

If you're not having any issues like battery life (likely) or performance (unlikely), I'd take your time and research the roms that are out there. You'll likely get a few more Honeycomb variants pretty soon, not to mention any other updates that might be on the horizon.

I flashed a ROM to get rid of bloatware and to improve battery life...totally worth it in my opinion.

Stupid question #2485 - I'm coming from a Droid X rooted with Liberty 1.5 ROM. It seems like rooting that was much easier than the TB, is that a fair statement?
Also, once rooted do most people use ROM manager? I used DX/D2 Recovery (I think) to get to "menu", but it looks different with the TB with that white hboot, fastboot, etc. screen. Now, for the actual question, when y'all are talking about "flashing" a rom, are you talking about Install from SD card command, or is it something even more complicated? Sorry about the length, but I've delayed rooting as it seems to be a much more involved process than it was for the DX - BTW, I'm a 60yo complete non-geek.

Yes, the process for the TB is very involved, but it's effective and that's all that matters.

I avoid ROM Manager like it's a chick that has the herp. I've seen more dumb, avoidable problems arise from people using it because they think it's "easier" 99.9% of the time you won't see HBOOT unless you hold volume down and power to get into recovery. The ROM I'm using (majority of them have this, IIRC) has a recovery option when you long press the power button. You can also d/l an app called quick boot to get into recovery.

"Flashing" just means installing from SD card via recovery.

Glad to see there's old timers getting after custom ROMs and kernels. I hope when I'm that age I'm still tinkering with whatever awesome smartphone is out at the time. Probably will be running Android 20.0 or something

Personally, what I would do if I were you, is make a nandroid backup of your stock ROM. Then, I would quickly become a crack-flasher.

Seriously. There's no better way to learn about ROMs and about what you like or don't like than to get your feet wet and try out a bunch. There's nothing to fear, really! If you were able to get through the tedium of rooting your TB, then you deserve all the fun you will have trying out new things. Try some Sense ROMs. Try some de-Sensed ROMs. Depending on your technical savviness, try our premier AOSP ROM, CyanogenMod 7 (still in pre-alpha, but very stable and a daily driver for most who flash it... just know that 4G is not working yet, and you will need to flash certain fixes once you flash CM7... if you don't have the stomach for it, then stick with the sense-based ROMs until AOSP gets a completely functional RIL).

Once you start flashing ROMs, you'll learn a bunch of cool stuff, and you might just get addicted to it like many of us here are.

And don't worry... flashing ROMs won't hurt anything. Remember, you can always go back into ClockworkMod Recovery and restore your stock ROM if things go wacky.
