Root To go Froyo, or not to go Froyo, that is the question

Well I tried Adryn's Super Clean 1.0 and had quite a few issues with it. Here is a list of the issues:

1) Whenever I plugged in the USB, it would rotate to landscape and lock orientation. Once in a while it would actually stay in portrait, but it still locked the orientation.
2) On two different occasions somehow my soft keys just stopped working (except for the back key). I could still use the phone as normal, other than the soft keys.
3) Couldn't get one of nit's themes to flash correctly. Not everything would change. Tried flashing it twice and it still didn't work.
4) I wasn't a fan of the launcher used because there was no customization options that I could find at all. Maybe I was just used to the ADW that JT included in his DJ05 ROM's.

So after all of that I decided to try the stock DL30 and that seems to be running much better for me. I am pretty sure that I wiped data enough before trying adryn's because I pushed the DI01 package through ODIN first, then wiped data and then installed adryn's Super Clean and had all of the above issues. Whereas, when I installed the stock DL30, all that I did was wipe data one more time and flash and I seem good to go now.

Did you flash Dj05 or DL09 radio to use with superclean?

I'm trying to figure out which rom to flash at this point. I don't want a bunch of issues.

Yup, I went with DL09. I was previously on DJ05, but decided to go with DL09 since that is what most people are assuming at this point.

Well, as I was typing this in the other thread, this one got started and since it's more on-topic, I'll re-post it here:

My thoughts on DL30:

I'm just gonna go ahead and say it.

This DL30 is NOT ready for PrimeTime. Buggy as all get out, just trying to install or uninstall apps is a nightmare - the entire phone keeps locking on the install process, or if it does go thru (just the first couple did) it won't UNinstall. Package installer keeps freezing. Market is spotty as hell (and why is it back to the old one). Look at the headers in task manager - notice the blue "burst" coming from the right side? Yep the whole bar is mis-aligned by about 1/32". Letters on the keypad are wrong. The whole thing just feels "shaky" and I can't trust this phone with DL30 on it. Not even for the simplest things.

Constant freezing and locking up.

And yes, data has been wiped (more times than I can count, every single way possible). Phone has been completely wiped, restored to DL09 stock, flashed with new DL30_leak.zip (downloaded from 3 separate mirrors and hash-checked), new CWM, everything has been done - I'm no noob at this stuff.

No matter what I do - package installer freezes. The entire phone locks up about every 5 minutes and becomes completely unresponsive. Gmail is hit or miss. Mostly miss on my end, every once in a while I'll get it to pull up and then it freezes. Even stock apps are behaving badly. And no, I have NOT restored any backups (Titanium or otherwise) - tried that the first go round and everything went into a FC loop.

And this is the 3rd time I've wiped and re-installed. When I revert back to Adryn's 12/30 UV non-voodoo kernel and my "safe" DL09 nandroid backup - my phone is pure, blazing fast DL09 goodness. As soon as I try to load DL30 - it becomes almost useless.

I had a pretty good idea that this was alphaware - but I tried b/c I knew I had a solid DL09 nandroid to fall back on. And that's exactly what I'll be doing until a couple tested and bug-fixed versions are released. I give nothing but props to the guys who put this out, and I know fully the risks involved with alpha/betaware. I was hoping for a little more polished "out of the box" FroYo experience. Not to be at the moment. Now we start to see why FroYo hasn't been pushed to the SF yet.

It's not ready. If VZW were to push this version it would be a support nightmare. I'm wiping (AGAIN) and going back to my uv'd, totally smokin' DL09 for a week or so until this gets worked out. I'm sure it will, but folks if you are even a BIT hesitant about doing this, I strongly recommend you wait until either a tested and proven version is out, and/or VZW releases it officially. Save yourself the headache and keep a working phone. Or, get really really good and restoring nandroid backups and re-flashing kernels!!!

I don't have a single issue except that the phone will not sleep if I have the GPS toggled on.

How did you install it, as you're the only one I've seen with all these problems.

BTW this was a RC not alphaware. If everyone was having the same issues I'd agree with you but it seems to be only you.

You might wanna try flashing the di01 all in one odin file. Then reflashing froyo. That odin is the only one that really comepletely wipes out everything. It could be something left over that is causing problems.

From what I have seen everyone is having great performance from DL30. If using the di01 odin doesnt fix anything then I would say you just got unlucky with the draw of phones.

Ditto this

yup, it seems the *vast* majority of users are more than satisfied with dl30...aside from the quirks here and there

There have been a couple issues, I'm not the only one with a less than flawless 2.2 experience. :o

Issue has been cleared up, couple pages back I posted that it's a corruption somewhere in my gCal sync that's causing all the freezing. Remove cal sync and the phone flies. Check it and everything gApps related crawls to a standstill, then FC's.

As I also posted much earlier in the thread - I flashed the complete DI01 restore file from scratch. My methods were fine (I've been flashing phones and ROMS for quite some time now), however I found out the problem lies in my calendar sync conduit. I'm going to likely have to backup/wipe my entire calendar, try to re-sync with a clean slate, then re-import my data. It's a total PITA, and no real explanation for it. Guess it's iffy weather up in the cloud wherever my calendar .xml code lives... ;) Regardless, I've fixed all the initial issues that were gApps and market related.

If it was in fact a RC, it was the very early ones. VZW just got the newest build which would be 2 further down the line according to their 14 day test period. There's sloppy code, library remnants, typo's and other obvious early-ware signs all over it. I mean it's nice and all, and it's certainly working FroYo, but it's not finished code. Th GPS no-sleep bug being one, obviously. Kind of a biggie - and again with the sloppy GPS code from Samsung. ;) We can quibble over alpha/beta/RC status all day if we want. My point being - DL30 is a nice proof of concept - with still a ways to go before 2.2 gets OTA'd. It's going to be nice, but FroYo ain't the life-altering experience that many seem to think it will be. It's cool, and offers some very nice useability enhancements, but not revolutionary. Honestly, if I didn't like the new pull-down shade with the 3G switch so much, and a good challenge/QC/Bug-test exercise every once in a while, I would have already reverted back to my stable DL09 SuperClean that runs like butter. Lots of folks have. Custom Kernel UV'd 2.1 is still > Stock Buggy Beta FroYo at this point. From a speed and stability standpoint, at least...

I'm also glad for all the work that is being done to get us Froyo but I'm gonna wait for at least a couple more weeks till some kernals and all the hype dies down before I switch over. My phone is running like butter on DJ05 right now so I can wait.

Dude I feel you lol. I can't afford to screw my phone when it revolves around my life in college. If an OTA update doesn't happen in like a month, and a few kernels and decent ROMs are out I'll probably flash it then :)

PM answered btw :)
To address both you and nessbuilder's concerns IMO 2.2 is very stable and a complete daily driver. Everything works and there is little in the way of gremlin reports I have no complaints at all. Its true there are not kernels out yet but overall even on rfs and without voodoo/ext4 the 2.2 experience is not slower than the 2.1 voodoo experience.

It should be noted that DL30 is not the OTA thats like to be this new EB01. However, this probably will turn into a DJ05/DL09 situation where they are virtually interchangeable....maybe....I think....dont quote me though;):p

Seriously though I also have just my SF, no landline and with a small personal business I need my SF 100% all day everyday and it is on the superclean 1.0

Quick question? Does the super clean 1.0 come packaged with the working red cwm or do I have to flash that as well? Looked for the answer but couldn't find it? Thanks in advance.

I think the radio is what we're really looking for :p

The updated google apps are worth the jump in themselves.

Can someone expand upon this? How are the google apps different from 2.1? I haven't made the jump yet as I'm REALLY happy with my current setup (01/23 Voodoo 5)

Well made the switch this morning to DL30 super clean with super dark theme. It runs really well and I have no complaints so far!
