To Root or not?

Ok, so this is my first tablet and not sure to root it or not. I have never rooted a phone but plan to do this with my Galaxy Nexus (a bit worried about that root) if not for any other reason but to tether it to my tab. What will I gain by rooting the Transformer Prime?

TIA!

With this tablet getting ICS shortly I don't see a reason to root it. It's super fast so no reason to root it for that. No 3g/4g so no reason to root to get tethering. I just don't see why as of now you would want to root it.

If root is found, I will be rooting ASAP!;) There's nothing better than a rooted device:)

There's plenty of reasons to root and ManofSteele just named a few;)

Custom ROMS. Root Explorer. Titanium Backup and Nandroid Backups. Ad-Blocking.

Good game.

+1:D

I will, for sure. Some of the reasons I use to want to root for no longer apply with this tablet and ICS: overclock, kernel changes, screenshots, but there is 1 alone that I can see of value.. full ROM backups. Plus, ad blocking.

As well, there will no doubt need some great hacks to come for this tablet, and no doubt, you will need root to apply them. For example, I suspect someone will make a hack to ditch that now permanent Google search box attached to the top of every home screen that is no longer a widget. That alone will make me root.

actually someone has already been able to remove that google search bar after rooting (on the galaxy nexus) but it has also been confirmed that that space cannot be used by widgets, apps, etc. it'll just be an empty space so u might as well just keep it there

You can actually remove it with stock ICS, all you have to do is go to. Menu>Settings>Apps>Google Search>Disable. But you were correct, the space can't be used without the search bar. :/

If I can still afford this tablet I will definitely be rooting it. Mainly for customization, and developing reasons.

Sorry guys but this may sound really dumb, but since my Evo is rooted and I have the wifi hotspots available, I wont be able to tether my Evo to my prime?

I would have to buy a 3/4g tab? Which is unavailable on the prime.

I assume this is a hardware issue, no 3/4g antenna? So there would be no way around this.

That really stinks, but still really love the tablet. Lol, so that little antenna cost another $100 on other tabs...wow.

No, the point of wireless hotspots is that your Evo will convert your cellular signal into a Wi-Fi signal that your tablet will pick up. No worries.

.
Using a different launcher also gets rid of it. I had to exit out of go launcher to figure out what you were talking about.

Why root:
1. Change bootanimation
2. you'll be ready when roms and kernels are released
3. you'll be able to install a recovery, so you'll have more control of your device, so if anything EVER happens you can make a backup and restore it
4. You can overlock to 1.5ghz or 1.6ghz (stock is 1.3ghz)
5. Very coop apps like Ram Manager or Task Control need root
6. You can install Ubuntu/Backtrack and actually use Ubuntu (currently only chroot)
7. You can install mods like change the icons ect. (not adviseable until we get a recovery)
8. If you ever wanted to sell your prime, the fact that its rooted (or hacked) it would be more valuable)
9. Get ad-hoc networks working, it was disabled on all ics devices
10. so many more more
