Help Too many bugs, this is going back

kjjb0204

Android Enthusiast
I love so many things about the TB that returning it today is going to be tough. Just too many bugs in this thing to be my dependable daily business device.

Losing 3G connectivity daily, the ##778# thing works, but only temporarily. Thought a hard reset fixed, it's back.

Exchange emails being resent 20+ times. No idea why - haven't seen anyone else complaining of this issue, no idea how to fix, vzw has no idea, htc has no idea

Build quality - the battery door creaks and squeaks incessantly at the bottom corners - incredibly annoying

I have no idea what I'm going to do now for a device. I might grab my Droid Pro out of the drawer or one of the BB's still there. Above all, messaging and communication must be flawless - my job depends on it.

My battery door creaks in the lower left hand corner...incrediblyyyyy Annoying!!!!!

There are a couple other 4g devices due to be released this month. Is just use the pro til they are and make q decision after.

Battery door creaks? You know I never noticed it, but my lower left corner seems to be loose too. It has some give when I push on it - but no creaking... The rest of it is solid.

I've experienced none of those issues.

A case will solve the battery door creaking thing. Also make sure you snapped it closed all the way, mine is tough to snap at that part of the phone.

The Exchange Mail problem you are having is likely the fault of your company enterprise server, not the phone. Either way, if it isn't working correctly, it isn't right.

Battery door creaking thats odd. Mine doesnt do that at all. I am starting to wonder if it matters where u buy this phone from i.e. amazon, Verizon, or some other 3rd party site. Even though it shouldn't matter.

I got the shiny black silicone case on, u can hear the creak through the case, so that's not really a solution. However, I'm a build quality junkie, and it should just seal tight like mostly all Motorola phones do. Lol, its not the end of the world, but its annoying.

Anyway,
Just called VZW customer care, and they're sending me out a new battery cover! So hopefully this one doesn't have that annoying lower left creak...

..vzw has no idea, htc has no idea

That's because Exchange email is notorious for not playing nice with various smartphone technologies; it is highly likely that it has nothing at all to do with your Thunderbolt.

Battery covers, the only "moving part" other than the hard buttons, SD card and whatever you plug into the USB port or media jack, often have to "work in" with use. If it's squeaky or hard to remove, etc, just remove and replace it several times, being sure you're snapping it in around all edges each time.

Nahhh, it doesn't matter! Honestly its not even VZW's fault. They can't really control things like this. It's a mass quality built product, so it kind of varies from phone to phone and stems from the production sight. Historically, HTC gets a BIG thumbs down on build quality. They suck in this dept, they are pretty well known for dust under the screens, faulty creaky battery covers, screens not aligned properly, recessed power buttons, shotty volume rockers. I mean its a pretty lengthy list for a company that produces some pretty high end devices. Honestly, these issues have been around a while, and IMO should be addressed. You just don't really see a lot of these things on Motorola devices.

Yeah u right. It was just a shot in a dark at a target the size of an ant.

You dont see these things on motorola devices? Lol!! Ok, yeah whatever. I am proof that you do.I am on my 4th Droid due to proximity sensor issues, terrible headphone jack quality issues and now my power button just randomly became stuck months ago and is hard to depress for no reason. But my wifes HTC Incredible has been solid for her over a year.

I would have to disagree with your comments about HTC. Not every phone coming off the line will be perfect unless a robot is doing all the work. I'm looking at the phones you have listed and this looks like your first HTC device. The EVO is my second device from HTC and I haven't had any problems with the HTC phone I had before the EVO. I could throw my previous phone across the room and that thing wouldn't break.

Look at Honda automobiles, I had some paint chipping off the edge of my brand new ride. Honda used a touch up pain pin and put an edge guard on both the doors. Honda is known for building cars quality cars that last. Just like your phone they may have some paint that chip here and there but the car still runs like a dream. Everything you mentioned with their device is consist of cosmetics, not the overall functionality of the device.

Every smartphone maker has their quality issues. I mean, look at the BB storm for crying out loud. What a piece of junk. My Inc was rock solid though, but I would have to pry it from my wife's hands now that it's been hers for 6 months. That had EAS issues too and had to depend on Touchdown.

The only device that seems to really fit the bill for me and my need for flawless communication is a BB. I hate to even breathe those words, but it's come to the point where I haven't found a single android device that can handle messaging as effectively. So many things about BB I don't like, but the couple of things it excels at are what I need at the moment. I suppose I'll have to forgo the fun stuff and the most excellent big screen, but at the end of the day I have a smartphone for work first, fun second.

Sad to hear, however you have to use the phone that is right for you. BBs are simply the best there is at messaging and especialy exchange mail. There is a reason that most businesses use BBs as their phone of choice. I don't use exchange for my email so i don't have that need, Android does everything I need and well.

However it isn't for everyone, like you said you have a specific need that has to be met for your job. It sounds like the BB is the best phone for that need. Android has never had very good exchange support (it is why Touchdown is such a popular app). Sorry to hear that you had the experience you did, because I love Android and wish everyone did as well. However I can't be a blind fanboy and sit here and say that it is just as good at exchange and messaging as a BB is.

Good luck to you and hopefully there will be some better exchange support in upcoming Android releases. :)

Just to clarify- I love Android and so many things about it. And my TB is an amazing device in many ways. It's going to be very painful to give it up, but I just can't allow my work to suffer because of a device. If it hurts my productivity and efficiency, it's a no-go. I guess it's like only having one car and giving up my Ferrari for my Accord. Both very good at what they are designed to do, but not very cross-functional.

I can't even believe I'm giving up Android for BB right now.....

Never would have noticed that the battery door does make a sound if I give it a death grip.

I have a case on it so I just never knew it.
I never noticed it with the case off, I used it for the first week with no case.

But.. I have to squeeze the poop out of it to get a squeak.
Almost to the point of hurting my hand actually.

My original Droid before I joined the forums was rock solid, no issues.

My first EVO had a recessed power button so bad it would take a magician to turn it on.
My second EVO had some dust, a creaky battery cover, and again a recessed power button.

My first incredible had a creaky battery cover, and crappy call and speaker quality, I went through a few Incredibles until I found one with decent call quality.

My first Droid X had some dust under the screen...other then that was ok, second one was fine. However ended up returning and going to the Samsung Fascinate.

My first Samsung Fascinate had crappy call quality, and a faulty loose volume rocker. Second one which I still have has been Perfect, not a single issue, except for these clowns at VZW and Samsung not giving us Froyo. Honestly its the most perfect phone, from A-Z there are Zero issues with build quality, or even software for that fact. Honestly, everyone I know that has the Fascinate has zero issues at this point. Very well built IMO.

My Motorola Atrix was pretty much perfect, for the exception that at&t just outright sucks!

My first TB had dust under the screen, recessed power button, faulty hard to press volume rocker, so so call quality, and terrible blue tooth call quality. My second one is fine so far for the exception of the creaky battery door, which will be replaced when I receive a new battery door from VZW Monday. Other then that I'm fairly happy with the TB at this time.

Honestly, all phones are going to have some issues, whether its HTC, Moto, Samsung, LG, etc...
However, my beef with HTC is this...
The TB shouldn't have hardly any build quality issues, and I mean hardly any, they should have learned from the EVO last year on how to seal a screen so dust can't get in this big 4.3 inch screen, how to make a power button that doesn't sink in the phone, how to put a volume rocker on a phone that is easily usable, and how to align a battery door to avoid creaks...Yes I get it, some people won't have any of these issues, but when you research these Forums and others, these issues that were a concern a year ago in the EVO are back again in the TB. So yes, not evey phone could be perfect, but HTC cheaped out on using quality craftmanship and went the cheap route for the TB in a lot of areas.

We shall see how Motorola has fared with the Bionic on Build quality when its released...

Do you like to return phones for the heck of it? That's a lot of phones that released within months of each other.

You'll be back man...Incredible S is on the way, the Samsung Charge, MOTO droppin the Bionic soon, LG is bringin some heat with they're new phone, and Samsung has the Galaxy S 2 coming stateside pretty soon. A lot of options in the very near future.
Also on the Blackberry side of things. An all touch BB, which is suposibly going to turn a few heads when its released is coming soon also to VZW.

Either way...Good luck.

No problems for me either, I love my Thunderbolt.

so your point is the TB should be perfect because it's similar to the EVO? for a person who complains about notorious quality and material issues with HTC i'm surprised you chose to get one and why you still have it...

all of the issues you mentioned can be said about any smartphone. some of the complaints are very minor (creaking battery door), while others aren't common at all (dust under the screen).

if you research other phone forums you'll see your complaints echoed from posters very much like you in all of those forums. there's always a guy that says [insert product/manufacturer here] is notoriously crappy. seems like you've chosen to be "that guy" on the TB forum. lol

my og moto droid had a loose volume rocker that felt like it could fall off at any given moment, although it never did. the battery cover got loose and fell off a few times. dust eventually got under the screen. the slider got loose and wiggly. the screen eventually got scratched. the earphone plug went on the fritz and was defective. i exchanged that phone once only because of the earphone plug issue and decided the other issues were bearable. look through the droid x forums and there are several build quality issues not worth repeating here. yet some people say moto has superior build quality?? lol! there isn't one manufacturer who is head and shoulders above the rest. know why? because these products aren't built to last forever and they're built with the most cost effective materials and assembly processes to keep the company's costs low. at the end of the day it's all about preference and perception. i can pretty much guarantee that if you take a blind sampling of 10 phones from HTC, Moto, Samsung, LG, BB you won't see a large variance between build quality between them for the reasons i mentioned earlier. it's that simple. but maybe that's too simple for some to understand.

as for the OP - kudos to you! you identified issues that you could not live with and decided to do something about it rather than hang around and complain. hope you find something to hold you over until ready to try out another device. just know that a lot of people are not having the issues you are. good luck!

In general, HTC makes pretty phones, but build quality is not they're strong point, neither is call quality regulary. MOTO on the other hand is basically known for superior call quality, and build quality. Sure they have they're quirks like every one else. But history tells a tale that MOTO owners speak highly of the things I just mentioned. Seriously, I have the TB now, this one is pretty much on point so far, and I'll probably pick up the Bionic when it drops in the summer, and who know what other phone. Build quality issues will always exist. I was just making a point that HTC could do a little better.
the build quality of my tb is the most rock solid phone I have ever handled, and I do not have any of the quality issues others are complaining about on here.

people on here need to realize that every single person with a good phone isnt going to get on here and praise it, but all the people who happened to get a bad one will

Yea my second is fine...for the exception of the battery door. Everything else is pretty much rock solid. But yes, ofcourse everyone with a good one will not be on here, same token with those with problems. But the ones with problems are more amplified and out spoken on here.

So... 12 phones and three carriers in less than a year sound right?
