Help Too much work to search contacts?

Still a noob, only 2 days with my LG Optimus S

So, my phone is on the desk, screen dark, and it has automatically locked the touchpad, which is fine by me - no pocket dialing.

Here's what I am doing to make a call:
1-Hit the home key to light it up
2-Slide the lock to the right to unlock it
3-Touch the phone icon to enter dialing
4-Touch contacts
5-Hit the menu key
6-Touch search, to find the person I want to call
7-Enter enough letters to find the person
8-Hit the phone icon to dial them

Is there a quicker way to jump straight into search?

2- slide to unlock

how about using the favorites list? it shows you a list of the most called contacts, or just using the scroll bar instead of typing letters? a big scroll bar appears on the right side, just slide it to the letter of the contact... you can also put (shortcuts)contacts in your home screen

After step 2, simply hit the search button and type in the name or number (or a portion of), and the search results will instantly show the contacts, applications, and anything else that matches the input string.

So after unlocking the phone, in a single step you can find the contact(s).

Alternatively, you can install an app called "Gesture search" also made by Google. With it you can swipe letters to find your contacts.

I have an easier way using two apps, both free in the Market. NoLock takes away the swipe, and allows either power or volume buttons to wake it up. Google Gesture Search allows you to crayon the first few letters with your finger and call when the name conveniently appears.

1. Hit a button
2. Gesture Search icon is on my main screen
3. draw a letter or two (and it's quick, it doesn't care about rules - a "d" can be drawn both ways for example - a backwards 6 is suffiicient to be a "d" a 6 drawing is a "b")
4. select name

When all done, tap the power button to darken phone.

I'll bet you can draw a few letters faster than you can type and select. ;)

That was my first thought also.

My second thought was:
1. Hit a button
2. Hold search button to launch google voice search
3. Say "Call (name of person)"

^This also works for calling businesses that are in your area but for which you do not know the number.

ALSO...... Find an empty spot on your screen, give it a long press. ADD Shortcut. ADD Contact. Select Contact. After that. It's one press to open that contact then another to text or call that contact. Select which action and you are on your way.

I use one of my desktop pages for speed dial. I do the long press, shortcuts, direct dial, select the contact and now I have a page of my most dialed contacts I can access in one touch. I even add the wife and kid to the bottom toolbar so I can call them from any page if need be (this is mainly because I have an 'in car' page that is displayed while I'm driving with the usual music folder, pandora, gps, vlingo in car widget, etc, and the wife and kid are on the toolbar for easy access). When calling someone I don't call that often, I will either use vlingo to voice dial or go to my contacts folder and scroll or use the search button.

I replaced the default dialer with dialer one (free in the market).

Then, open the dialer, start typing the first couple letters of the persons name (T9 dialing) and hit the dial button.

Dialer one also gives you a better call log then the default dialer.

If you install this app and don't like it, before you un-install it make sure you go to Settings-->Applications-->Manage Applications-->Kz.mek.DialerOne-->Clear Defaults (to tell your phone to revert back to the default android dialer).

I might try this, too. Been missing my speed dial.

Already took this one a step further and put the voice dial icon on the home page. It's sometimes a bit of a struggle - I think it needs to learn some and I wonder if it will ever master infrequently called numbers.

OK, so it's simple enough to create a "speed dial" page with shortcuts.

But, I'm looking high and low for how to add a contact to the bottom toolbar. My LG Optimus S as a phone icon, menu icon for all installed functions, and a Sprint ID icon. And at either ends, little dots that jump you to the next adjacect page. Nothing obvious on how to add a contact to that.

For that you'll need a home screen replacement app, Launcher Pro for example. You can change the dock shortcuts, and can actually have up to fifteen dock icons on a scrolling dock.

i unlock my phone
tap the voicesearch(app pre installed on phone)
say the name of contact(actualy i say call.....or send text to......)
and bam u either are looking at the contacts calling them or if ur like me speaking into the text field.
I absolutely love the voice search its the coolest feature of the phone to me.
i use it for everything u can(pretty much anything with a search field) it can be funny sometimes and not put in the right words but its pretty impressive
