That tethering app that comes with it, is that FREE tethering that use your data only or will you get charge $15 or so for the att tethering?

Wow, I have tried this 5x to no avail, it says file doesnt exist. I did it exactly as it was asked new file name to update.zip, but it cannot read it..am I doing something wrong?

This is actually a very common mistake among those that are new to Android and flashing different things in clockworkmod recovery mode. I have to admit when I first started, I to, made this mistake.....

What people tend to see now-a-days is the direction to rename the file you download to "update.zip". Well in actuality you're renaming it to "update.zip.zip" because it's already a zip file in .zip format. When you rename it just rename it to "update", bring up the properties of the file to make sure it still holds the .zip format extension. If your on PC just right-click and go down to properties.

By renaming it to "update", Android actually reads it as "update.zip".

I hope this clears it up some.....redownload the file if you want and rename it to "update". Let me know how it works....

EDIT: Make sure it's on the root of your internal SD, in no folders or anything....

All I have done so far to my phone is rooted it. I am about to flash this, but if something goes wrong will I be able to go back to how the phone was before?

Total noob here trying to learn

You can also use ROM Manager and make a nandroid back up of your current ROM. If something goes wrong, just go into clockworkmod recovery mode and do a nandroid restore.

i renamed the folder, put it in the sd card(internal) and put my captivate into recovery mode, hit reinstall, and it starts installing, then says "installation aborted". any solutions for this?

You may have accidentally hit something in recovery mode.....
In the "install zip from sd card" menu.....click on "toggle signature verification", then click on apply sdcard: update.zip. If it still doesn't work try "toggle scripts asserts". I'm guessing you may have accidentally hit one of these options which can interrupt the flashing process. Clockworkmod recovery mode is pretty advanced if you know how to use it, but simple enough to flash a ROM in 2 clicks lol

Wifi Tether is free....it all depends on the kernel that's running and having root access of course.....but be careful though....Word is these carriers can track the amount of data used....

I have jailbroken iPods, bypassed my schools security, changed my computers registry, but when nothing I have ever done in my life has been as easy as this. I opened this thread praying that my Captivate will be working after I finished. Thanks man for the great post

Does anyone know why I'm not able to delete the wifi tether app? It won't let me use it and I don't see it in the market place to re install. Reason I want to delete is it keeps saying phone is in unknown state and to reboot. Tried that many times as well as trying the superuser fix with no luck.

Any help on how to get it to work or why it won't work and how to delete it would be greatly appreciated I do love this unleash the beast though very nice work!

P.s. I tried using the terminal to delete it from the directory but still said denied..

THANKS!!!!!! I just rooted, who would have thought it would have been that easy. Now to play with this puppy!!

He posted version 0.5 on his website on September 22nd. He mentions the Droid so I was curious if the new version would work on the Captivate as well? Or should I just stick to 0.1?

I am just wanting to make clear on one part that I am not 100% sure. It seems a few others might be a bit cloudy in this area too. Hopefully my question will help more than just myself.

3. Place on sdcard (the built in card, not the removable)

and

EDIT: Make sure it's on the root of your internal SD, in no folders or anything....

Now for the procedure:

Lets say I have the file, renamed and everything.

So now I plug in my Capi via USB to my computer. Mass Storage. Mount. I can now see my phone as a new drive under the "My Computer" in Windows Explorer.

It's called "Removable Disk (H):." Now I know this will be different for everyone's computer. The letter after "Removable Disk."

I double click that and it shows a few files such as:
albumthumbs,
Android,
DCIM,
sd,
etc,

Lol, now to the question. The place I want to put the update.zip file is in the "sd" folder, correct?

Right now when I double click "sd" there is nothing in there. Can someone please confirm whether my assumption is correct or incorrect.

Thanks for the help. I am sorry if this has pretty much been answered once (or more) but I am very anal and I love my new toy and would hate to harm it.

:)

I want to try this, and everyone says they love it but I need a way to go back to the 'normal' version of my phone in case I have to get return for warranty. Anyone on ideas?

i just applied this root and for some reason all the diff cpu apps i download say im running at 550mhz, am i really running a governed processor now?

Hello and thank you for bringing this killer app here! and thank you to the author!

Installed with one hiccup. Superuser kept timing out. I basicly reinstaled the zip and problem was fixed. However after i grant terminal SU control I then type SIDELOADER and this is rejected with SIDELOADER: NOT FOUND
I would very much like to get a few apps onto the android os so could you kindly steer me towards a successful SIDELOADER permission?
thank you in advance!
Y!S
OOP.. I NEED TO READ THE WORDS ON THE INSTRUCTIONS.
WHEN I TYPED SIDELOADING....IT WORKED..duh!

Just used this tool today. However, since it removed MyFiles, I can no longer use music as the tone for my alarm. Says that I'm missing the myfiles app. How can I fix this?

I get an error message saying something something I897
my phone is with rogers and it's I896
maybe that's the thing which is restricting me rooting :(:(:(

Help me if you can??

i did this and my market access is still blocked. I deleted the tether app to reinstall it but when i try to install it says access denied or whatever because the market doesnt allow it. Any help?

Ok.. So, fairly new to the Android community, use to be an Apple Fan Boy, then I saw the light.. But anyways, I'm on the newest Firmware, and I'm on a Samsung Captivate
(I know, AT&T sucks..), I moved the "update.zip" file to the SD card, loaded the Boot menu, and selected reinstall packages, then I got a message saying
"E: Can't open /sdcard/update.zip
(no such file or directory)
installation aborted."
Help please. Email is prefered; elgar149@gmail.com

Hello everyone,

First off, I had my captivate rooted.

Everything was going fine.
Last night I updated my OS to 2.2
now these updates will not work, I keep getting this error while "installing the packages"
"E:signature verification failed Installation aborted"

Do we have or know the fix for this? I'm new to Android (and I love it!) But now I'm unable to root after the 2.2 update.

Thank you for any replies

Cbarnard
