Total noob question...

I installed the HTC Hero USB driver, then I ran the

RUU_Hero_HTC_WWE_2.73.405.5_WWE_release_signed_NoDriver.exe

and now it's stuck. The phone says...

HERO CVT SHIP S-ON
HBOOT-1.76.0007 (HERO10000)
MICROP-010f
TOUCH PANEL-SYN0104
RADIO-6.35.06.18

RUU USB

ZIP Header Checking...
and the computer says...

Sending
Updating signature..........
Updating the ROM image on your Android phone...

Please do not remove the USB connector from the Android phone or launch any programs during the update process.

Remember the operation will take about 10 minutes.
I'm way post 10 minutes. What do I do???

Good question. If it's still apparently 'stuck' then I can only suggest restarting the handset and seeing what happens.

Okay, I disconnected, rebooted, and it started right up. But now, Windows doesn't see the device. I hear it connecting when I plug it in, but nothing is in the device manager.

It's there, but it's now under disk drives, and it says HTC Android Phone USB Device.

It no longer shows a HTC Android phone.

The drivers haven't installed correctly by the sounds of it. At least the handset still works.... what is the build number displayed now?

I tried this. But it didn't work either. When I clicked on apk file it says unable to open file.

All I really want is the official app market place. I'm open to any suggestions.

if you're on 2.73 you cannot root your phone (as said at the top of this thread). There's a problem with the kernel that stops you. People are working on it but it's a case of waiting at the moment.

Not true. The *.61 (Orange UK) and *.405 (generic HTC) builds didn't replace the bootloader with the perfected one, and if you'd read the thread that I linked to in my previous post you'd have seen that *.728 appears similarly-blessed.

Slug, you saved the day. That link worked.

Thanks for all the input everyone. I've got Google's Marketplace now, and a really cool ROM.

So Simon, it's no longer an issue in waiting.

But can someone please explain the 411 on installing a radio? The MoDaCo rom I chose highly recommends installing the latest radio, but it said little about how to or when in the process to do it.

You update the radio ROM in exactly the same way i.e. rename it to update.zip, copy it to /sdcard and then apply via the recovery image. In fact, you don't even need to rename it, just use the "apply any zip" option. The handset will reboot back into the recovery image after flashing, then appear to stall at "formatting cache...." It hasn't though, there's simply no confirmation that the operation has completed. Reboot from the menu and you're done.

Btw, make a note of the current baseband (radio) details from About phone so that you can reflash the old ROM if you notice degraded performance.
