I use 4EXT and love it. Never had a problem with it. I've got a really big case too, so the volume rocker controls annoy me too.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong but can't you get a free version straight from WWW.4ext.net that just has less features than the paid version?

Just got done using the 4EXT Updater (free version). Sounds like it can only install and update the 4EXT recovery, which is honestly all I needed. Thanks for the help everyone, I may end up buying 4ext control...we'll see

I highly recommend buying the 4ext control, but it's not necessary. I find it useful every now and then, but I don't use it near as much as I thought I would. Glad it worked out for you though

Yes, this. It allows you to select zips to flash before you reboot, install themes, and some smaller additions to recovery. You can check out the full feature list on the 4ext website.

If you don't want to pay the three dollars for 4EXT Recovery Control, which is well worth it IMO, you can download the Recovery Updater app from 4EXT Development and install it as an apk. It will provide all of the functions of Recovery Control app for a three day trial period, then revert to the basic functions that allow you to update and configure 4EXT recovery.

You can use Aroma File Manager for that. Just "install" it as you would any other zip file and you will have a file manager that is more powerful than the one in TWRP2. It doesn't actually install as part of the recovery so you have to start it with the zip file every time you need it.
Works with any custom recovery, even the non-touch versions.

If you mean utilities that run in recovery, I don't know of any other full blown apps like AFM, but there are utility scripts like the ones to reset the mainver and unlock/lock the bootloader. Once you learn a little bit about Edify and shell scripting, there are actually a lot of things that can be done from the updater-script in an installation zip file, but that's not as "user friendly" as AFM.

I'm only trying to help out here since there are no Evo V 4G specific forums on XDA and I want to be able to provide support to VM users for my rooting and S-OFF guide there.
There are a lot of very knowledgeable people here, and we all learn from each other.
