Tougher than it looks!!!!

Working on my boat this afternoon when my HTC Desire fell out of my pocket into the bilge of the boat, about 6 inches of water with a smattering of oil.

FUlly submerged, retrieved it from under the water and whipped the battery out. Left it on the dashboard of the car over an aircon vent to dry out.

After an hour in the dry heat put the battery in, everything ok apart from the touchscreen randomly generating "touches" when fingers no where near.

Took battery out again and left with the screen upwards in the sunshine.

Battery back in and everything works just perfect!

Good job it was this week and not last week. Previoulsy the boat had been in salt water but I cleaned the bilge out last week and it has been in Thames "fresh" water since then.

Take it to a repair centre ,they will put it in a sonic bath to vapourize any water vapour on the circuits

Got new Desire Black on Wednesday.
Downloaded the Shotgun app on Thursday.
The phone flew out of my hand on the first shot! Screen shattered!
Called OrangeCare on Friday.
Received new phone on Saturday.
Shotgun app deleted......

only problem is that your warranty is void as the moisture sensors in the phone will show the device has been submerged. Any future problems will not be covered by HTC

I dont know, my last phone survived for another 3 years after it was submerged.

People's sweaty ears have been damp enough to trigger the moisture sensors in the iPhone. Now that *is* bad luck when the phone needs repairing for any reason and Apple claim water damage.

I dont know, my last phone survived for another 3 years after it was submerged.

I found that with my (very) old Samsung D900. Have bounced my Desire twice now luckily not from too high and it is still mark free and works like a charm.
It is a fantastic phone

As a precaution, it may be worth sticking it totally submerged in a tub full of (uncooked) rice for a couple of days, people have done this with non working iPhones etc and the rice absorbs up all the moisture. Just an idea, they also say don't turn it on once it's wet as this causes most of the damage but it's a bit too late for that one.

Fingers crossed you're phone is OK in the long run.

Apple and their moisture detectors were featured on consumer rights show Watchdog here in the UK a few weeks back. Sweaty ears, plams and even moisture from your mouth when talking was enough to change some of the sensors.

that's surprising, as the moisture indicators are laminated from the outside, they have to get wet from the inside out to change colour. in theory.

There was an item about this on a UK programme - I think it may have been Watchdog.

Apparently there are sensors on things like the earphone socket and also on the internal circuits. Repair centres are supposed to check all of them, as sweaty ears etc can make the ones near the outside go but the ones deep inside will remain unaffected.

The report highlighted that very few centres (and particular official Apple stores) opened the phone up to check the internal sensors and incorrectly just checked the near-external sensor. So the issue you mention above is more to do with lazy staff/bad customer service than official policy the point was.

The main issue is contaminants in the water damaging the components.

Salt and sugar will kill PCBs by rotting the board and tracks.
