Trekkies discussion - TNG (The Nerd Generation)

We just got to the episode with everyone's favourite Bajoran - Ensign Ro.
Haven't seen Wes for a good few episodes. Not that I'm complaining, but maybe he was in the middle of real school exams, or something?

I really don't like the way Ro exited from the show. Maybe that was the point? (we can discuss that when you get there. ;) )

Michelle Forbes was offered a part on DS9. She turned it down. I believe she didn't want to do a regular TV series at the time. It's too bad because so many people liked her character. Nana Visitor got the spot instead playing a different Bajoran character.

Forbes also played Admiral Cain in the new Battlestar Galactica.

Just watched a couple of good ones - Chain of command (there are four lights!)
Also the one where Moriarty escapes the holodeck, or so he thought. Ended up in a gadget simulating the entire universe. That's going to take one shed load of memory!

Has anyone been to a Star Trek convention?
Daughter has expressed interest in attending the 'Destination Star Trek' event in Birmingham (UK). I've looked at the guest list, and there are some big names there. Shatner, obviously, plus characters from Next Generation and other series. The cynical part of me thinks it's a massive fan money gouging exercise. Autographs costing up £65 each! I can see how they can make a living from attending these events.
I've had a look at reviews for the 50th anniversary one, held in 2016, and it appeared to be a shambles in terms of organisation. So not sure about this one. Tickets are expensive, and I guess you'll end up spending a lot more for merchandise, and maybe photos/autographs.
Daughter seems keen though, so maybe I'll do it anyway. Plus, Dr Crusher's going to be there! :D:thumbsupdroid:

My brother has attended a bunch of them when he was living in California. Yeah, it's a money grab, but he's got some very fond memories of meeting the actors who played his heroes of younger years. Is it worth it? I dunno.

I saw Chuck Mangione live in concert when i was in college and i've always admired his music. Years later he performed locally and i was excited to go. While the music was still good, i was a little taken aback to see how he's aged, I'd don;t know if I'd pay to see Shatner or anyone from TOS.

I have visions of queuing for hours, then 10 seconds of meeting your idol, and paying an extortionate amount for the privilege. I could be doing it a disservice though.
We'd obviously have to attend in character. I'm thinking I may go as Lt Cmdr Data. Pics may be posted here.

Go as Riker, then you can take your Trombone. ;)

I would be a mutt type character. I have the voice and dashing good looks of Worf, the body of Picard, the mind of a ferengi, the dancing ability of Data, the odd eyes of Riker, the empathy of Deana, the sense of humor of Tasha, the charm of Wesley .......... basically a mix of most of the least quality traits they all have.

Go!!!! You are right about the pricing, but they are making a living off that. Not that I agree, but still. And trust me, half the fun is seeing everyone else that shows up. The cosplay, the creativity, the randoms you meet and talk to. THAT is what makes a Con for me.

I know @NightAngel79 regularly attends the granddaddy of them all ... comic con. I don't know how it stacks up to a Trek-con, but he really enjoys them.

I would LOVE to go to one focused on a singular idea/show/topic/etc... One of my fondest memories was a Con I went to that was all Star Wars back in the 90's. When everyone is there for the same thing it makes it so much more special.

You're not far off if I remember, but you will have the opportunity to talk a minute while you get the autograph and picture, which is worth it for many. And other Cons I've seen charge more for autographs, so the 65 you said (which is 80 usd or so) is pretty close tot he norm.

Tickets booked!! Daughter wants to go in costume, so that's full nerd status then! :D

The £65 was for Shatner. But the other actors are much more reasonable. Marina Sirtis (Councillor Troy) is a mere £25. Yeah I know, not my first choice, but the selection is limited, and I read that she was really good with people. Will be great though to meet one of the actual actors, hope I don't get too starstruck.
Any suggestions on what I could ask her?
