Updated install instructions for TrickDroid 3.0: No longer the install form hell, but a bit different from what you are used too

Old post

While I am not too fond of Sense 4 based ROM's I decided to try TrickDroid v 2.0.0 This fairly quite ROM is gaining some steam in XDA, and was interesting since the posts are not full of bug reports.

The ROM is based on the HTC One V ROM with files taken from the HTC Sensation One S ROM. The good thing about this is that the UI is lag free. Full Sense 4 ROM's like Virtuous Infinity perform surprisingly well, with a hint of lag here and there telling you it is probably time to upgrade your hardware.

But the install, well it is the ROM install from hell.

It all starts conventionally enough.

  1. Download ROM, place in SD Card.
  2. Check MD5sum.
  3. Back-up your old ROM.
  4. Full Wipe
  5. Install

Everything starts up fine and you have two problems:

No Gmail. You have the other Google apps even Google+ but no Gmail
No dialer :hmmmm2:

The Dev advices:

Dialer fix: If the phone tab is missing in your dialer, you should first of all wipe cache and dalvik cache and fix permission as well in recovery

Don't wast your time doing this. I does not appear to work for most people, and it did not work for me.

Instead install Venom's fix. This will fix broken weather animations, resize the gallery and fix some lock screen issue too.

Basically:

Booth into recovery - --> Flash part 1 of the fix ---> Wipe Dalvik & Cache ---> Reboot

Dialer back.

Booth into recovery - --> Flash part 2 of the fix ---> Wipe Dalvik & Cache ---> Reboot

Weather, gallery and lock screen fixed.

Note. The file name of the fixes are so long it is hard to figure out which is No. 1 and No. 2 once in recovery. Don't worry, you will see the full file name when the 4Ext asks for confirmation before flashing.

The good news is the ROM uses the Blackout Kernel and support voltage tweaks.

All for now.

Thanks ral... not surprised that you're trying another ROM out ;) Good to know which "fixes" not to bother with and which to do :)

Do you want a link to TrickDroid putting in the ATR sticky?

I tried this rom yesterday and it all worked well for me. Used version 2.0.0 and then after first boot I flashed it with the tweaks. Zip file. Runs well I thought. Not too impressed with sense 4 tbh, prefer jelly time to this rom. Only bonus out of it was I got more space on my drop box account.

I am still new too all this... the novelty has not worn off yet.

Yeah, I think the TrickDroid ROM deserves to be there. It is surprisingly good. All the problems I have encountered with it are camera related.

Panorama and HDR modes results in a force close.
Face detection locks the camera app, requiring a reboot.

Basically similar issues to Virtuous Infinity. Oh yes, for some reason I cannot get the bar code scanner working too.

This ROM has one interesting tweak which removes Sense and replaces it with Nova.

lol :) know what you mean... I've just flashed an (unlocked) ICS bootloader on my A500 (as I knew the ROM devs will eventually stop supporting the HC bootloader, so thought I'd do it now :)

In the list now :)

Sure they'll get it sorted soon enough!! :)

I think It's about time I had a Rom change, Icecold is starting to lag a little now, and i think i just need a fresh rom or 2 to see my DHD contract out. Which would you recommend, jellytime or Trickdroid for the time being?

Thanks, Steve.:)

I'm sure ral will be able to give you his view (I've not used either), but you could always try one for a week and then the other, to see which you prefer (then change to whichever suits you best) :)

Yeah, I don't now why I didn't think of that! :) Just wanted to know really if they are both ok as daily drivers? Got them both downloaded now so will give them both a shot. :)

Yeah, I don't now why I didn't think of that!

lol - the best part about being rooted is that you can try different stuff out ;)

From what others have said, JellyTime certainly is... TrickDroid has only just been mentioned... AFAIK, ral is the only person to have tried it... he'll be able to advise! :)

Let us know which you think is best for you :)

I'd go for jelly time! Looks better and runs smoothly. But why not try both...nandroid backup then flash.

Right, just in the middle of flashing the fixes for trick droid. Only did this one first because the GAPPS package is taking ages to download. Will try it for a bit and see how it goes. Thanks for your input guys.:)

No problems, we're here to help. Happy flashing. :)

Ok thanks mate.

Ral, where art thou?:):)

I was zzzzzzzz.

Which ROM. I think they are all fine ROM's (so basically you are not getting an answer).

It depends on what you want. None are 100% bug free.

Sense 3.6. I personally like Blackout the main reason for this is I like Sense 3.6 best. However Blackout, has "deal breaker" issues IMHO:

  • No VOIP
  • No WiFi hotspot,
  • Poor voice call quality

In my case I do not use VOIP much (and when I have to I can us my Wifes phone) and the WiFi hotpsot, and I find voice quality acceptable.

Objectively, if you are not sold on Sense 3.6, there are better options.

Sense 4. I also revisited Virtuous Infinity last week. I think this one has no "deal breaker" issues except this ROM is the slowest of all DHD ROM's I tried. Sense 4 is Sense 4. It keeps on occasionally reminding you that it may be time to buy a newer phone :)

The scaling issues are still there (original UI was designed for 540 x 960). Some widgets look awkward when resized, full screen weather animations are broken in landscape mode. For the camera you have to disable face detection in the camera. I failed to test HDR and Panorama mode on this ROM.

Nice ROM, but if I like Sense 4 I would go for Sense 4A.

Sense 4A. I think you made a good choice with TrickDroid. If I did not use Peep, I think I would stick with this one.

TrickDroid is has a UI based on Sense 4 A (lite). This results in fixing the scaling issue in VI since the UI comes from a 480 x 800 display. Sense 4 lite runs nicely on our DHD's.

On the other hand, it feels very spartan in some respects. Home screens slide from left to right instead of rotating. You don't get to zoom out and see all your home screens (forgot what you call this). When you press the menu button from the home screen it feels more like GB than ICS. Sense 3.6 still feels faster.

The only issues I have found with TrickDroid so far are the camera issues and the odd non-functioning Barcode scanner, although there may be issues I have no encountered yet.

Oh yeah, I have not been on it long enough to be sure, but it does seem like it consumes a lot of battery power. Decided to restore my Blackout Nandroid and will spend more time on TrickDroid next weekend.

It comes with a lot of very interesting Tweak options. Loading the tweaks is a cumbersome process. Enter recovery and install through a AROMA installer. I don't understand what some of the tweaks are supposed to do.

If you decide you don't like Sense... an interesting project which you can try is to remove Sense via the tweaks.

I would not recommend this a newbie. The install is too difficult if you ask me. But you should manage all this easy enough. I could have flashed 3 ROM's in the time it gets this thing to work well.

AOKP. I am disciple of Sense. You should probably PM Metha23 on this one. I tried two (or was it three) versions of JellyTime (until 8.1). Things are fixed and something something is broken again

The last version I use was fine, with the usual AOKP issues. Camera, video quality and battery life seems to be a tad short of what you get from a Sense based ROM.

I do like JellyTime more than ICS 8.6.1. The notification drawer is the biggest improvement I noticed.

I'd go for jelly time! Looks better and runs smoothly. But why not try both...nandroid backup then flash.

I have four Nandroid backups on my phone :) I probably drive Google (2-step authentication) and Viber nuts.

Sigh. I don't want a "Like". I want an "Install from zip" :)

If the banana dog does not get you, nothing will. So this is my last try.

Ok, ok... I'll get on it... in work at the moment (only 10am), so won't be able to have a look when I get home :)

The new notification tray and the quick launch shortcuts on JellyTime are almost enough to make me give up Sense.

I bought Nova Prime Pro... shame not to have a ROM to test the Pro features with.

Update: Was reading a bit at XDA. R15 looks like a nice number. Maybe we best wait.

Thanks for the very detailed information Ral, it helps a lot. Been using trickdroid for the day and so far seems pretty good. Not sure on the battery life yet, but to be honest, as long as it makes it through a day, which is relatively easy for myself, I am happy to charge it up over night. One thing I did notice is that the call quality is a lot better than Icecoldsandwhich.
Will try it out for a week or two and see how it goes, and then maybe give Jelly time a Flash.

Thanks again mate. :)
