Root Tricking apps into thinking you're unrooted

Time Warner Cable has an app that lets its customers stream content if they're on their home LAN. Trouble is it won't work if it detects that the device is rooted. Is there any way to spoof it to make it think I the device is not rooted ? An app, maybe? It would be sweet to be able to watch cable TV on the N10.
 
Hi Bruce. I moved this to the All Things Root forum.

This one is pretty easy, after I spent hours trying to find a fix. Go to your system/apps folder. Look for superuser.apk. Rename to SU.apk. TWC app should work now and superuser doesn't care what you call it.

Later: yep, easy peasy. Love it. Now, why does TWC care if the device is rooted or not, if it doesn't impact performance?
 
I flashed the latest AOKP yesterday and I'm having problems again getting TWC to play. There is no superuser.apk in system/app, only SuperSU.apk which was installed with the ROM. So I'm a little hesitant to touch that. ;-) Any ideas what I can do?

For the record I did try OTA Rootkeeper, but that didn't work.
 
If it were me I would try renaming supersu. I don't think it will hurt anything but you could always make a copy of it and put it on your SD card if you need it.

Like Atma said, try renaming SuperSU.apk, but obviously make a backup prior to doing this in an alternate directory. AOKP builds after mr4 have started using Koush's open source Superuser application, so that's probably the relation. However, I'm not sure if you're using Mr.Rob's PUB build or the official AOKP build, etc..
 
Thanks, guys, I'll do as you suggest and let you know how it goes. For the record, I'm pretty sure it's the official build (this was my first attempt at flashing a custom ROM). The file I downloaded was:

aokp_manta_jb_mr1_build-4.zip

I'm curious, since changing the name of SuperSU.apk won't be a problem, is the app actually installed in a different folder? I guess it must be.

Later: That didn't work. Any idea what I can try next? If I don't get it working, that's OK. I'm loving this AOKP so it's worth the trade off.
 
Are you changing the file name or the extension? Im fairly certain that all OTA rootkeeper does is save a copy of superUser or SuperSu, depending on which one you have and then changes the file extension ".Apk" to something else that disables the app.

It only works for me when I run it before opening flixster.
 
I'm changing the name only (SuperSU to SU). That's what I did before with superuser.apk and it worked. I honestly don't know how OTA Root keeper works; what you say makes sense. Are there other ways other than this one file that flags the system as rooted?
