Root Trouble with first time root

Ok, I'm trying to root my droid x for the first time and install the cyanogenmod ROM. It's got android version 2.3.3 and I'm using my desktop computer with windows 7 installed.

I'm following the guide I found on the CM website wiki. I'll post the link below.

I've installed java developers kit, and the ADB Shell. I've gotten all the way through to step 7 on the "Gaining Root Access" section and for some reason after I've exited the adb shell and killed and restarted the adb server, I can't get the shell to open back up with the '#' symbol. Sometimes it says "device not found" and sometimes it restarts with the $ symbol again.

What am I doing wrong? Can anyone help me with this, or possibly direct me to a better guide?

android forums will always have the simplest method of doing things to your device, when in doubt just ask. someone here always has the correct answer for what you need.

Yeah, a whole lot easier that typing commands in the adb shell. If you run into problems, just post.

+1000 If you're looking for root no reason at all to be messing with adb...the Linux CD method or the Motorola root tools are super simple

ok, now i'm having a different problem

I get all the way to the bottom of the tutorial, and when I select the ROM zip file from my sdcard I get all sorts of problems

It starts out fine, and then gives me this

assert failed: run_program("/tmp/check_kernel")==0
E.Error in /sdcard/cm-shadow-full-154.zio
(Status 7)
Installation aborted.

What's up with this?

it needs to be .zip not .zio

hahaha, that was a typing error.

could the problem be that the only thing available were nightly builds? I finally found a gingerbread based stable cyanogenMOD zip file, downloading it now, and trying that

any updates on this?

I have the same exact issue and have tried installing the 154 and 152 nightly CyanogenMod rom's, both with the same error.

any ideas?

A status 7 error meens you are trying to flash the zip file in stock recovery. You need to flash the zip file in clockwork recovery. In cwr navigate using vol up+down and select with camera button. select "Install zip from sd card". Then "choose zip from sd card". One you finish flashing your zip file use the back button to go back to the main menu and select "wipe data/factory reset". Reboot when finished.

Yeah, that didn't work for me. This is the 2nd DX I've tried to flash, I'm not in stock recovery, I'm in CWM, selecting zip from sd card, still getting status 7 error mentioned above. FYI, not a noob. If I need to do some crazy shiz with ADB I'm all for it, just wanna get CM on this stupid thing.
