Root Trying to get custom kernel

thenilo

Lurker
Hi there

I'm trying to get a custom kernel on my HTC Desire GSM. I've already searched several forums and found several How-To's on flashing a custom kernel into the phone. (i.e HOWTO: Unpack, Edit, and Repack Boot Images - xda-developers). Always quite the same. Going into recovery mode, connect to USB, dump boot image, unpack boot image, repack boot image (mkbootimg binary) with custom kernel, flash image. But every time I reboot, the phone stucks on the HTC splash screen. This also happens when I just unpacked and repacked the original boot image with the original kernel (no changes).

So what am I doing wrong?

Thanks for answers.

Have you asked these questions in the sub-forum specifically for your phone. Any advice given here might not be whats best for your phone....Did you make a backup of your system in recovery before you did anything to your phone. If you did, you might want to restore your backed up system. This Tutorial^^ is designed for use with the LG Optimus "V". Please direct any questions you have here

I don't know the HTC Desire, but I had exactly the same problem with my asus tf101.
I have solved changing this line:
Code:
mkbootimg --cmdline 'no_console_suspend=1 console=null' --kernel your-kernel-file --ramdisk newramdisk.cpio.gz -o mynewimage.img
with this:
Code:
mkbootimg --kernel your-kernel-file --ramdisk newramdisk.cpio.gz -o mynewimage.img
Hope this help.
