Root Trying to root, won't boot into recovery

I successfully rooted my eris several months ago and am now trying to root for a friend but cannot get her eris to boot into recovery. I've tried several root methods and I know I'm using the correct buttons in the correct order to access recovery. Any suggestions?

Did you reboot (power off, power back on) in step 3?

You have to do this in order for things to work correctly, otherwise, the recovery partition will not be overwritten with the custom recovery.

After you reboot, then you can try to boot into recovery...

Well, both methods are pretty straight-forward, especially erisuser1's "root for dummies"...can you provide a little more detail?

I would try jcase's "1-click" method again (http://androidforums.com/eris-all-t...is-app-apk-no-pcs-no-scripts-needed-easy.html):

1. download and install app
2. run, read disclaimer, press button
3. reboot by turning the phone off and then back on
4. boot into recovery by powering-off the phone. then while pressing and holding the volume-UP toggle, press the end/power button (keep pressing the volume-UP until you see Amon_RA's custom recovery menu).
5. when you see the custom recovery, select and flash either the rootme.zip or your selected custom ROM

I know this is repeating what's in jcase's thread (and what you've already tried), but I wanted to emphasize the #3 and #4 steps above.

Lots of folks have done this method without issue...its probably (and hopefully) going to be something small and simple.

Scary alien, I've tried that method over and over and over. Is this significant--when I reboot, then power-off the phone and hold volume-up and power button, the lock screen comes back on?

Lol, yes! I think you must have one of the phones that does not boot into recovery like most phones (I've never experienced what you are seeing but have seen others post this).

Okay, let's try this...try booting into recovery using #3 in the link I sent you earlier (http://androidforums.com/eris-all-things-root/177367-rooting-custom-rom-questions.html#post1592392) unless you've tried that already in which case I have no clue :eek:.

So, power down the phone. Then, press and hold the volume-DOWN button and then the end/power button. You should see (after a few seconds of things scrolling down the screen) the image that I posted in the link above. You should hopefully see the image and see an option to then press the volume-UP button to take you into recovery.

If you can not boot directly into Amon_RA recovery, try to get there indirectly: boot first to Fastboot mode (Send+End), then select "Bootloader" in the menu which appears in Fastboot mode. Once you are in HBOOT (Bootloader) mode, proceed to the recovery boot according to the menu presented in that mode.

If you continue to have difficulty, please report what you observe the phone doing, rather than just saying "it doesn't work".

Sigh. Scary alien, you're a prince for staying and helping, but I tried that and had tried it before. I'm afraid this is a lost cause. Something about the phone. . . Thanks again.

So far, you have not ever said whether you can start the phone up in either FASTBOOT, or HBOOT mode, nor what happens if you try to use the menus in those modes to proceed to the recovery boot. You did mention "lock screen", but that would never happen without first passing through the boot sequence screens... unless you are pressing those buttons with the phone still booted.

Just thought I would ask during this brief interlude, if you ever checked-out my app? I didn't want to "proliferate" it without knowing that it met your standards regarding jar-signing... I very much value your opinion and I don't want to say that the app represents something that it really doesn't.

Just to ask the question, When you start the phone, are you releasing the volume-up button right away? Or are you holding volume-up, press power until the phone's display starts to light up, and then continue to hold volume-up - do not release it - until the recovery screen shows?
 
I have tried all iterations of pressing. Press vol up, then press power, then release power, hold vol up. Or, press vol up and power simultaneously, release power, hold vol up. Or, press vol up and power simultaneously, release simultaneously.

But you've got to start from the state of the phone being powered-off...[edit: you didn't explicitly say that it was...]

Please be very precise in your answer to the next three questions.

For a phone which is stone-cold-like-the-battery-has-been-removed-off, there is NO WAY you would see a lock screen immediately. You would see the entire boot sequence first - the three skating androids, then one or more splash screens particular to the ROM being used, and then finally - more than 50 seconds later, the lock screen would appear.

Now, either that is happening in the events which "leads back to lock screen", and you are simply not mentioning those details, or the phone is not off, and the lock screen is appearing almost immediately - a few seconds at most.

So,

Q1: Of the above two possibilities, which is it?

Or, perhaps you are seeing the stock recovery boot "splash" images, and calling that "the lock screen" - it isn't. (Usually it is a black background with an image of the phone and a triangle (red?) with an exclamation point in it.

The stock recovery boot is a little different from Amon_RA - it doesn't show the menu right away. When the splash screen appears (no menu), you have to press again the Vol-Up and End keys (briefly) for the "Recovery <2e>" menu to appear.

Q2: Does the thing you are calling the "lock screen" look like the regular lock screen when you have the phone booted, or something different?


Finally, here is another thing to try.

REMOVE THE BATTERY AND RE-INSERT IT SO WE ARE SURE THE PHONE IS OFF and then try pressing (and holding until the screen comes on) the Send & End buttons.

Q3: What do you see happening on the screen when you do this, and how long does it take until stuff stops happening?
