trying to update but get error 170

I am trying to get my Orange Hero up to the latest Orange .66 update from the HTC support site.
Have downloaded the ruu and tried to run the update but I get the usb connection error[170].

I am running W7 and have the latest version of HTC Sync installed, 2.0.33
I have no errors on the device manager for the ADB interface, it shows as a HTC Dream.

Please don't suggest using a Win XP machine as I don't have access to one, all mine at home are W7 machines as are the ones at work.

I know my phone is connected correctly because I can browse the sd card from the pc to back up my music and photos.

This is a branded Orange Hero that is still as it came out of the box regarding the firmware and build number (2.73.61.5)

Please help, I have just spent the last 3 hours trying to resolve this issue.

Check out the instructions in this post. Ignore the references to x64.... it's proven to also work with 32-bit Windows. No guarantees but this will at least ensure that the correct drivers load as required, and a driver issue is the usual cause of Sync problems.

No joy, now bombs out on the Android man skateboard screen.
Restarted the phone (battery out was the only way)
Tried again and still get the error 170 again.
Showing "My HTC" in the driver section so that hasn't altered.

Too tired to continue

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Ticked the usb debugging option in the settings menu.................still no joy.

Any suggestion please would be most helpful, getting a little frustrated now.

Disconnect your Hero from the PC.

On your PC, right-click the HTC Dream device in device manager.

Select 'Uninstall' and click OK.

Make sure you instruct the PC to remove the driver software.

Plug the Hero back in and let W7 use it's own drivers.

Do a Windows Update.

One of the updates will be for the HTC device. DO NOT INSTALL IT. Hide the update so that it doesn't bother you any more.

Make sure that the device is listed in Device Manager under 'Disk drives' as 'HTC Android Phone USB Device'.

Then let us know what happened.

Device Manager shows HTC android phone usb device with drivers dated - 21/06/2006

ran sdk tools and this shows my phone connected as it reports the serial number.

Started RUU ....................... guess what, no joy on the update

Tried Fastboot method too, no joy

un-installed anti-virus, just in case that was affecting it.

HTC Sync connects to the phone and sync's fine.

Changed RUU to run in XP SP3 compatibility mode

Guess what ............................................... no joy.

off away on holiday tomorrow so I will check for replies before I go and then it will just have to wait till I get back in two weeks.
Hopefully someone will have a solution for me ..... please

Joy, copied the files to a totally different pc also running w7 and .66 upgrade worked first time. How bizarre.

Now I need to get 2.1

Odd, that. Since the 'phone syncs OK with the PC, it suggests that the drivers/connection/Sync application are fine. Maybe there was a permission issue with the downloaded update?

Was a bit concerned about not getting 2.1 straight away as per other threads, but lo and behold, I get home and have a better data signal and now I have 2.1 on my phone.

Thanks for the advice guys, one happy Hero owner once more, now to see what 2.1 is all about.

No joy for me, tried the previous driver suggestion but no good - still get the 171 usb error message.

Also, it's asking me to replace the old system with . . . the old system!

Any other ideas?

Have you tried with the computer NOT connected to the internet?

Another thing to try - when in bootloader mode (skating android men) remove the connection and plug back in again.

Also try effecting RUU in fastboot mode, ie. switch your phone off then switch it on by holding the power and back buttons at the same time.

I spent hours trying to avoid error notifications and it eventually worked.

If that fails write to HTC support - they reply within the day.
