turned off Sense UI, got a faster eris

OTD have you tried Beautiful Widgets? They have a Widget that is almost identical to the stock one. They also have a smaller one which only takes up 1 row but still has the cool weather animation.

I downloaded Home Switcher and I'm going to set it up to my liking and then see which I like better. I'm really kinda digging the fact that the phone button isn't ever-present.

I have tried it and weather widget donate. Didn't care that much for either of them that much. I really just love the look of the stock one so much, silly I know. Plus with the added animation that comes with 2.1 it is just beyond cool. We have had nice sunny days since I installed 2.1 :( and I keep hoping for a nice doom and gloom rainy day so that I can see what this thing does. :D

I totally understand. I actually happen to really like the Sense wallpaper. Haven't upgraded to 2.1 yet, waiting for the OTA. I learned some hard lessons with upgrades/hybrids on the BB.

I like the new 2.1 clock, weather and news app ported from the Nexus. The HTC one still defaults to Chicago for some reason, even tho i don't live there. I use an i.wunder link for weather anyway.

I think I would cry at this point if I had to give up the clock/weather widget. I don't care what taking it off does for my phone. I love that little animated thing.

That animation plus leap is worth flashing the ROM alone. There are a lot of improvements in this version. And guess what, even with my ever present OCD, I haven't touched this ROM with a task killer. I'm quite proud of myself! Plus 2.1 handles memory about 10 times better than 1.5.

was debating of returning my eris b/c is was so laggy at some points. googled turning off sense ui. i tried it and i am getting a much better response from my phone now. even after a manual update of the OS, it was still laggy as before. if you don't mind not having sense, it is great. has anyone tried this? i haven't been running w/o sense for a while and about to go to bed, but i will try more apps tomorrow. don't know if this has been covered.

I dont know how many have tried, but i have and i agree..im not currently using sense UI,and i DID in fact notice a performance/visual increase.:)

while sense is smoother with 2.1, i just like the look of the regular android. Plain and simple and it has a cool animations when switcing/opening apps and such. Although the weather widget for 2.1 is badass, i can live without it.lol

Having all of those extra screens makes me feel like I need to fill them as well.

Don't even try either, I did (TasKiller) thinking it might improve somethings, but really no, this phone runs so good at 20-30MB RAM left now, it's amazing (except when loading the apps management - running in settings, takes foreverrrrr) But really why bother!

I tried just home (in 1.5) to speed up the phone with identical clock widget, cute calendar widget which was even better than the stock one at 1x4, and other nice widgets, but then i started missing the people widget from sense, twitter, bookmarks widget, etc. lol, so guilty am a twitter fan.. and the speed was only like a .5s touch responsive increase, but once sense gets even more optimized, it will speed up, already noticing that with 2.1 leak. :)

My phone just needs to be sexy haha and sense ui 7 screens full screen widgets do that everytime. After taking sometimes nearly a minute to figure out how to unlock my phone, lol - People scroll through first glance to see apps like iPhone only to see a work of Art.... :)

It doesn't need to be a powerhouse to have instant response to speed through movies, videos, games or even browsing and texting as now my computer can do all those much better (texting with google voice is so nice!!), but on the go, my phone still CAN do it, of course .5-1.5s slower than the droid or nexus one, but really the annoyance factor is the only thing that declines Eris really, not the actually time/speed, as it is still a pretty powerful phone even with all the smack that the hardware is 2 years old or w/e... ><

Sense is optimizing, and I love it. Even though it does take like 30MB of RAM, that's only because it's SAVING the visual data... If you aren't using a task manager, home without sense will eventually fill up the data too and will start to feel a bit more sluggish, imo after using the phone with just home for maybe 1 hardcore week.

Me too, so why not?!

I even use the Today in History Widget for now (until News Widget comes (hopefully!)).

Might just be me but when I have sense turned on and all these widgets up, I almost never use them. I surf the web from time to time and check emails (gmail app) so having widgets and stuff feels like a waste to me.lol Although it looks cool. I have a few bookmarks as buttons and custom icons for the things I go to most.

Also another interesting thing that dawned on me was the fact that so many of us customize our phones to be like the iphone (icons mainly) yet we bash the iphone itself.lol I am guilty of that but I mainly trash talk AT&T service and not the phone itself. Its a constant battle with no end in sight.lol

Nice avatar! I see you are a 1%er. LOL

I agree :) I have tried using just the digital clock app but I feel like my homescreen is naked without the larger digits and weather info. Besides, it keeps me from having to start every conversation with "Crazy weather we've been having lately huh?" :D

This chat line is now many months old, but it was still very useful, and entertaining to read. I hope no one notices that this is my first post.

I recently lent my mother my Droid bc she HATED her Eris and I wanted her to try the Droid before she bought one and then decided she hated it too. So, for the next 2 weeks or so I am stuck with the Eris. First thing, it is kind of cool and sleek and whatnot, since I am used to the beast that is the Droid (which I was fine with, actually liked). Second, it is considerably slower. I found this thread in an effort to learn how I could speed it up. I got rid of Sense and that has seemed to help a lot. I dont root things and I dont have processor monitoring software, but it seems quicker and in ATK it seems that I do now have more free memory.

ANYWAY, since March has anyone figured out any other tricks to optimize the Eris' performance? How about deleting programs that turn themselves on (Amazon MP3 . . . ) Can I do that? It wont let me in the settings/applications/ area. Any other ideas?

Thanks a lot.

thats not a live wallpaper, its a sense UI feature called weather forcast opening effect. I don't think you can disable it other than not using the sense clock/weather widget

Remove the clock widget then re-add. After you select your city you will be asked if you want to show the animation or not with a checkbox.

I am new with HTC Evo 4G (droid 2.1) with Sprint. I can't turn off sense UI. I saw simple process from other google site:

To turn-off Sense UI and run the stock Android 2.1 home screen on the Sprint EVO 4G just navigate to Settings > Manage Applications > HTC Sense > Clear Defaults and Force Stop

Done!

After hit home button, it restarted itself and back to same (sense UI).... I come back to check in Manage application, and see only "Force Stop" and clear default to dimmer... Why can't I get rid of sense UI?? I am tired of accident hit "phone" button.

Thanks in advance,
