Help TV-Out on the Droid

First duty on the SDK: Make video player with Video out support.
Second, make a DHD (From stargate) phone dialer!

You are really gonna need to contact MOTODEV and see if the DROID can even do any types of video output. I totally understand and see what you have done, and it is very creative. Don't get your hopes up on incorporating sixth sense's code into this as it would take an extremely intense amount of coding knowledge and a vast understanding of the Android OS. You would need to tear apart the Android source code and somehow integrate sixth sense into it, which is nothing short of spectacular to say the least.

I will say this though, you are young and if you keep at it you could really have something here, although I don't see why you would need a MyVu if you had a sixth sense projection type display, unless you want to keep the info a little more private. You could have something valuable here if you took the necessary YEARS it would take for a single person to develop this, and could most likely make it your career and earn a lot from it.

But to touch on what I started with, you really need to contact the MOTODEV guys, and also the Android engineers to see if this type of output is even possible with the DROID. It may have the hardware to do so but is it even setup in a way to give reverse information instead of just taking input from the micro USB.

First, thank you for your kind words.

Yea I am going to contact Motodev, hopefully they will be able to provide an answer.... but I remember reading somewhere that the board the Droid is on does support video out.

Also in this article saying that they are releasing Sixth Sense's source code, the NY Times said this in particular:
"right now it works on smartphones running Microsoft’s Windows Mobile or Google’s Android software" ~Adding a ‘SixthSense’ to Your Cellphone - Bits Blog - NYTimes.com
Hopefully when the code is released I will be proficient in the SDK enough to do some reworking of the code.

Also, the reason I want to use the Myvu is because I already spent the money on it made it :P but that was before I even knew about the Droid.

Ok I have looked hard and it seems that Android doesn't support video out yet, furthermore no Android phone currently out has the hardware setup (as in setup to offer output) to do it. I do remember one product called the Zii Egg which is supposed to support 1080p video output and I know it runs Android along with its own OS called Plazma. Maybe you can look into that.

Ok I retract my earlier statement about using sixth sense with Android. I didn't know it was already written for it. Well I imagine with it you would need a projector and maybe use the camera to scan items, so I imagine the MyVu would be your projector just at a more personal view then what it is currently being demoed at.

Ok I found this..... OMAP™ 3 Processors - OMAP3430
Basically a picture of the board the Droid has..... Engadget had pictures of her opened up yesterday. I'm not quite sure if I am willing to open my Droid up right now..... ask me in 10 minutes :P
Couldn't find a way to contact Motorola directly.... will post on the Motodev forums....

Hmmm.... I think they should start a Droid sub forum for hardware specific things......

If by some miracle I become loaded with cash I will buy a second Droid and rip her apart :P

Also, I looked at the Zii.... meh its ok. One of the reasons I hesitated on the Beagle Board was because I wanted Cell Phone features aswell.

Reading that page you linked it does definitely say the board has "support" for it, but it is still up to the manufacturer to take advantage of that feature. I am sure if they had made it usable then it would have been a highly touted feature especially with all the iDon't stuff because unfortunately iDoes, and DROIDDoesn't.

Well, actually it isnt supported by the Iphone/Ipod either (It only supported video out in the one pre installed "Videos" app.....you could only make it fully veiwable if its Jailbroken.

Damn when is there a Droid XDA-Dev when we need them.

Never will be, XDA is HTC devices only. I have history with them and it ended badly. The thing is the Apple did make the hardware capable of sending video output they just either commented it out in the code or didn't implement it, and yes the DROID's hardware is capable of doing it, but did they enable it with proper ribbons/connectors? Perhaps look into seeing if a rooted G1 can do any video output and that might help, although they use different hardware.

If a G1 can do it I would be thrilled. I know XDA is HTC only, and I was joking about them. Hopefully the Droid will be rooted pretty soon and we can really play with it. Looking on craigslist and found some cheap G1's and Mytouchs that I may get (And not get cell service) just to root and do Sixth Sense with if you can find out if yours supports Video Out.

There is also a guy on craigslist claiming to be able to root Moto Droids for $50...... Im skeptical because there is nothing online I can find about a way to definatly root it.

Oh and the DROID can't be rooted yet so don't buy that dudes BS. Prolly gonna say "oh yours is messed up and it won't work but you still gotta pay me" or something. Plus if it was doable you know it would be somewhere on the almighty interwebs.

Oi.... just downloaded the PDF's that were linked on that page... got quite a bit of reading to do.

Hopefully we can get the Droid rooted fairly fast, and I'll like to contribute in the process any way I can.

Actually the processor in the Droid *DOES* have a TV out capability! So its in there. The only question is as to if Motorola wired that out to a connector. But YES the OMAP3430 *DOES* have TV out in S-Video and Composite modes at I think XGA resolutions. I've got the datasheet back at my desk at work as I'm looking at maybe using that processor in a project at work... I won't be using that feature so I don't have all the details off the top but it is in there.

Don't offer yourself up on the slaughtering board. Most any device that people are trying to hack for the first time end up being bricked, then people learn from the mistake and try another way.

Maybe you skimmed through this thread but we already came to that conclusion, we are just trying to find out if Moto has it wired or not.

Oh its all good bthoward I wasn't trying to be rude or anything, just making sure you didn't go through a lot of trouble to find that out.

The TV out on the 3.5mm jack is something my existing Nokia N95 does, also the N900 does it (very well apparently) and that has similar hardware to the Droid.

That Nokia N900 is one sick looking device. I'm picking mine up for my T-Mobile account in the next week or so.

Yea I like the N900..... right when I was going to buy the N810 they released info on the N900 so I waited. Then I decided to get my Droid :D
Even though I love Android, I would love to give Maemo a spin on the Droid.

Hmm.... tried contacting MOTODEV, but couldn't find anything on their tech support there that would get me to the Droid. Anyone have any links or can ask them?
