Help Two little lights

I was at my daughter's game today and it was a pretty sunny day. With it being sunny I noticed something on my Evo. Under the normal blinking light I was able to see 2 little lights. One looked blue and the other looked red. what are these lights for and how do you use them

Thx

different roms use the addt'l LED's on the right side of the speaker grill. stock one doesnt as far as i know, but then again i havent been using the stock rom for like 4 mos or so.... what rom are you using, and what alerts are on your phone when these lights are on?

I am using the stock ROM...Not sure if I really understand the whole Rooting thing. Last thing I want to do is brick a brand new Evo. I was hoping to use it like my old Blackberry Tour. My alert light was set up to blink different colors..Bluetooth, email, pink if my wife or daughter emailed or text me. Seems kinda stupid to build a feature like this on a phone only to have to Root it to use it.

LoL agreed on the stupidity of making people root to use stuff.... I guess i forgot that you can do the diff color leds on non root... oh, and bricking your evo is actually kinda hard to do with the new unrEVOked process (well, its not that new anymore LoL) but yeah, if you want to keep it stock, thats kewl, but there are alot of people in this forum thatll darn near race to answer any ?'s you have

oh, and how to use them.... you assign certain aps to notify in specific colors. should be in the settings of that particular app. and that means youd hafta set it up that way in your email app, mssg'ing app etc etc individually

Thanks...My email accounts are set up as POP3. Just checked the settings and the only thing it lets you do check a 3 boxes that say,Email, sound, vibrate. No way to assign a specific LED color or Sound. Thanks for the help anyway!

gotcha, yeah... ive noticed diff colored leds used on diff roms as their standard notification method.... are you considering rooting?

meh, people overthink rooting alot... yeah you can eff stuff up pretty badly, but its actually kinda tough to permanently"brick" your phone... i bricked mine yesterday twice trying to flash on a theme. that being said, i just restored from my nandroid backup (something youll get pretty familiar with, should you delve into the dark side) but man, i gotta say that there are such amazing people in here that can talk you thru darn near any problem youll ever encounter whilst rooting.... im fairly good at this stuff, so if youre inclined, theres a rooting for dummies guide that walks ya right thru it, and we can help ya if you get stuck :)

oh, and if you do decide to root, lemme know. i have some time saving advice for what roms to avoid etc etc, like id advise against using my rom (cyanogenmod7) right outta the gate, its a bit difficult to get the hang of if youre still kinda green....

What you were seeing is the ambient light sensor, for automatic brightness settings and Infrared sensor for sensing when your face/ear is up to the phone during phone calls so it can turn off the screen to prevent unintended touches. They are not lights nor usable LED's.

Although,

There is an extra, hidden LED, under the speaker grille on the far right, opposite the regular notification LED on the far left under the speaker grille. It is for Wimax notification, it seemed to be included with the final hardware yet went unused by HTC's and Sprint's software. There is an awesome third party application released that re-purposed this unused LED for extra and prolonged notification. It can display 3 colors Green, Orange-ish, and Red.

Check out this thread to learn more. It is an old thread, but will teach you what there is to know:

There have been recent updated to the application from a new contributor which I am not familiar with, but you should be able to hunt that down from the info I have provided (Search Wimax notifier, or hidden Wimax LED). The application is great and can be used with any Evo, even un-rooted handsets.

I mean zero offense, but I would highly recommend you not rooting your phone. At least not yet, you have more to learn young grasshopper. If it means anything to you, I have had my phone for 10 months and still have not rooted it even though I have most of the knowledge and know how. Good suggestions from Youdoofus (ironic name)
