Root TWRP 2.8.5.0 for Realm (LS620) and Exceed 2 (VS450PP)

Sorry if this is the wrong forum for these models, but as mentioned here before, these (models w5c_spr_us and w5c_vzw) are very similar to the L70 (w5).

Just finished building the latest TWRP for the LG Realm (LS620) / LG Optimus Exceed 2 (VS450PP)
Thanks to everyone in this forum, I had most of the L70 background .
All I had to do was fix the screen colors, touch capability (apparently w5c uses different hardware for that) and update the partition list.

Everything should be working well EXCEPT for the backlight dimming -
That's still a WIP.

• To solve this for now, shut off the screen timeout in the settings menu. If not, the screen will turn off and may not turn back on properly (and you don't want that happening in middle of a backup or recovery!)

As always, flash this at your own risk!

You're right. These devices are very similar, welcome. Hope you enjoy your stay at the L70/Exceed/Realm forums.

Would this also work in the L70? The TWRP for the regular L70's are broken and won't flash anything or do anything of use.

All we need is ROM support for the Realm/Exceed. I bet you can do that. Just change some partitions around. Everything is already setup for you .

Also there's been rumors of PhilZ of the L70 working, so if you don't like TWRP, you can always go to the CWM-based Recovery, PhilZ

I actually built CWM before TWRP, but as far as I can tell the one I found in these forums for the L70 worked for me too. (But I can definitely upload mine if it makes sense)

I've been trying to build CM12 for these devices, but so far, no go and unfortunately, when i tested the CM12 for MS323, the touchscreen didn't work.

So as far as I know, new ROMs would have to be reworked specifically for the w5c...

It'd be great if you upload CWM for the device since maybe some people prefer CWM over TWRP. So that would be a reason.

Attention: TWRP does boot for the L70, but touch is not working and volume controls are not working either.

This was tested with an MS323.

We do have a few ROMs for the LG Ultimate 2, also a w5c device. I am 99% sure it would work on the Realm. Just look on the LG Ultimate 2 root page.

Thanks for building this. I appreciate it greatly. I was able to flash it with Flashify, but I cannot boot into recovery from the device being power off, please tell me how to do this. I am currently just pressing random button trying to make it work. Thank you.

There's no way to do that. LG Devices are notorious for not letting you reboot into recovery via key combo.

Yea... I am working on a way to mod the boot.img to allow you to press the volume up key to get into recovery mode.

Some feedback...
There seemed to be a problem when TWRP was trying to mount /data on my VS450PP as it kept saying unable to mount /data in red. I made a backup of my VS450PP and the Data partition was empty (0 MB). Another odd thing was that my Cache was huge, about 1562MB or 1.6 GB. Are the data and cache partitions getting mixed up? Also when I restored it only showed the cache when I remember checking all the boxes. One last thing, I tried to boot into recovery by pressing volume and down and holding them until the wierd lg thing that lets you factory reset, wipe cache, boot in safe mode and I forget the other one popped up. I thought this would be like the G3 where it would just take you to TWRP when you select factory data reset. It did boot into TWRP but it said something about AOSP recovery command and ended up wiping my device. Could you possibly make a script that would deny all incoming scripts so that this wouldnt happen? Same thing happens if I wipe Cache. Great job either way.

After only restoring the cache partition the backup worked! It may seem like a buggy recovery but it does a hell of a good job. Good luck on modifying that boot.img btw do you have a paypal?

The version for the LG Ultimate 2 can mount the data I think if thats still a issue.

CWM back from the Realm using the CWM for the LG L41c? I know it works because this TWRP worked on our L41c. If I get a CWM backup I could rework a L41c ROM to work on Realm. And I could see if there is any files that could help out with a few of my projects.

I cannot get this to mount/access the /data partition no matter what I try. I used Flashify (because ROM toolkit closes at will) to install the recovery and after several full .kdz restores, I still come up with the same thing after installing the w5c_twrp_bumped.img. Is there something in the zip/instructions that I'm missing here? In the meantime, I have the stock Recovery saved (and now have it installed), and have saved the boot image as well. At least I can revert to stock without a full .kdz restore now.

EDIT: Additional info; When I get the message that Backup failed, I click "reboot system." TWRP then states "No OS installed!." I swipe to reboot system anyway, then get a message "Your device does not appear to be rooted. Install SuperSU now?" I am absolutely certain that I have root, but swipe it anyway. It then just boots the system normally.

I seems that TWRP cannot mount/read anything other than the /cache partition. Note that this is an Exceed 2. I also have a Realm that I can try this on, but I cannot retrieve the stock .kdz via normal means. Should I soft brick, I'll be out of luck, so I'm a bit reluctant IYKWIM

EDIT2: I took the leap on the Realm. Just backed up the stock recovery and flashed the
w5c_twrp_bumped.img with Flashify. Upon reboot into TWRP, everything works perfectly (I did set the screen timeout to max (300), to avoid it sleeping on me). Has anyone actually tested this on the Exceed 2 with success?

Forgive my ignorance, but are the partitions hardcoded into the recovery? This works great on my LG Realm, but fails miserably on the Exceed 2. I pulled the /dev/block/platform/... from each and they are quite different. If indeed hardcoded, it would explain the symptoms I am having (see my previous post). Being new here (but somewhat active on XDA), I'll attempt to attach the relevant /dev/block pulls from each. You will notice they are quite different.

Believing the "partition list" to be an issue, I took the liberty of unpacking your image. I then compared the rmdisk\etc\recovery.fstab to the slightly different partition numbers of the Exceed 2. I believe this is why the recovery won't work on this device.

I'm curious that if one edited the partition list "by-name" vs. the "number," shouldn't this then work on both devices?

/system ext4 /dev/block/platform/msm_sdcc.1/by-name/system

VS

/system ext4 /dev/block/mmcblk0p32 (Correct for the LS620, but the Exceed 2 is actually mmcblk0p31)

I tried editing the numbers & repacking yours, but I'm not all that familiar with such things and the recovery wouldn't load after flashing it. At least I think I found the reason why w5c_twrp_bumped.img doesn't work on the VS450PP, yet is perfect on the LS620. Could you (or anyone) perform such an edit/re-bump? I'll be more than happy to test it and verify functionality, as I possess both devices. This would only take me several minutes each using Flashify. Feel free to contact me privately if you prefer, and thanks!
