Help uable to access custom notification tone

hello,
I have a hero (2.1 modaco rom , just installed )

I recently flashed a modaco rom from their online kitchen. Previously, with stock rom - I had my home-made ringtones & notification.
Setting a custom Default ringtone is no problem as you can set that from the file itself wherever it is (set as ringtone). Notifications don't have that facility.

Now i cannot access my custom notification (for SMS) tone. . I have tried all path options, one by one --- ended up having made and copied my mp3s to:

/sd /media/audio/notifications
/sd/audio/notification
/system/media/audio/notifications (the mp3s are listed there, right alongside all the stock tones) [using roote explorer for access here]

the mp3s exist in all of these locations now, but from the SMS messages programme, the list of notifications offered still does NOT include my custom tones.

sadly the typo error is in my message. path on phone is
sd/audio/notifications

but now , mysteriously, the custom tone is again available. I thought I had set it up successfully before (since the root / rom flash) but found it missing and dismissed it as a memory issue (my own memory!).

How can access appear and disappear?
I have also since then installed 'battery defender' app, which I know from forum discussions can cause peculiar problems, but .. surely not related ... ?? (clutching at straws)
