Root Un-Rooting Captivate

dbwill

Newbie
I just got my captivate and wanted to load some applications not in the Captivate marketplace, and I also wanted to Tether.

I was told by a "phone guru" that to do this I would need to root the phone. Instead of doing research as I should have done, I rooted the phone, then I found out that between the Android side-load program and Easy-tether there is no need to root to do what I want to so.

Is there a way to un root the phone and get it back to stock as everything I want to do I can do without it being rooted?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,db

all the apps or methods to root also has methods to uproot ur phone...what did u use?

try this
[APP]SuperOneClick v1.5.5 (Root, Unroot, Enable Non-Market App, Get UNLOCK code) - xda-developers

I used this page and followed the instructions exactly:
How-To Root the Samsung AT&T Captivate

The files used are Android SDK from
Android SDK | Android Developers

and a File called Update.zip from:
BriefMobile - A mobile phone news, rumors, and reviews blog.

The process is simple but the sight that tells how to does not seem to give any instructions to reverse the process.

Thanks for your response. If you or someone could help I would appreciate it

If you had used the method in the Captivate FAQ, unrooting would've been a snap:

Root - CapFAQ

OK but my problem still is there. Would it be smart/wise/possible to use the process listed above to re root the phone then unroot ?

A second issue, I don't know if it is related to rooting/

I now cannot connect to the update server when I tap settings, software update, check for update

Perhaps, but that's not really much help to the OP right now is it? ;)

No... but it's important to emphasize the value of "look before you leap", as not everything has a "cure" and sometimes the only proper route "prevention". ;) Unfortunately some people only can learn this the hard way.

Are you going to add a how to unroot section? Or is your recommended root method just a click away from unrooting?

The recommended method has a built-in unroot. So extra instructions are sort of redundant. :)

If you know of a manual, universal and tested unroot method that works no matter what method a user used to root their phone, I'll happily include it.

OK guys, in my first post I acknowledged that I did not look before I Took the leap. I should have known better. BUT, that being the case I still have the issue of wanting to un-root.

I am not uncomfortable keeping the phone rooted but there is that small voice that says put it back to stock.

If any one has ideas or might direct me to a site that might help I sure would appreciate it.

Again thanks to all who have had good thoughts and tried to help

Concerning unrooting,I have Permanently Rooted using RyanZA's s4root app. Can I unroot using the One Click Root thing or do I need to use the z4root app?

Thanks

I tried the One Click and it has worked however, the phone will no longer make contact with the AT&T server. I suspect I need another update.zip(or whatever) with the original settings from AT&T, Does that sound reasonable and if so where could I get the necessary file?
