Root Undervolting help

sx4dude2013

Android Expert
So im at a point where im almost able to make it a whole day with moderate/heavy use.
im running an moto extended battery, brightness on the display all the way down, backlight buttons off, email update every hr, apex 2.0, etc.
My final effort for better batt life is undervolting.

I read the thread in dx forums (the big sticky) abouy batt life.
I explains a good bit about undervolting.

So my thing is i dont want to see any negative on performance.
i installer quick clock.advanced and ran the configuration but then what?

Any step by step advice? A better free app. Just want something to help with batt life. Im so lost!

Now that it has been calibrated you can go into the Overclock settings and enter your clock speeds and then it will calculate your VSEL values. Assuming you want to use the stock clock speeds just do the following:

Press on "Overclock", then enter these speeds into the first column:

350
600
800
1000

Once you've entered the clock speeds press "Calculate" and then "Set CPU", press "Keep" when the box pops up and your settings will be activated. If you want the setting to kick in when you reboot go back one screen and press "Advanced", then "Boot", then Enable. If you need further help let me know.

Airmaxx23 beat me to it.

Another thing you could do is set up profiles using an app like Set CPU. For example, you could create a profile so it runs at a max of 300/350 when the screen is off.

JuiceDefender is another option. Some will tell you it doesn't work, and others will say it works great. I use it, and it works for me, but I consider myself a light/moderate user. Since you're a moderate/heavy user, it probably wouldn't make a significant difference. If you always need a data connection, it wouldn't be a viable option either.

Juice Defender is a savior!

Thanks for that. I literally just downloaded QCA because of your mention in the CM7 thread and was trying to figure out how to get it to do voltages and stuff.

Thanks so much! Im gonna re try it tonight :)

Airmaxx's post didn't tell him anything about undervolting though, which is what the OP asked for.
For undervolting I use JRummy's Android Overclock app (it's not free but it's only a buck or two). I've been testing different vsel values because I too am trying to maximize battery life without loss of performance. Here's what I'm running right now:

Slot 1: 250 mhz @ 23 vsels
Slot 2: 500 mhz @ 38 vsels
Slot 3: 800 mhz @ 48 vsels
Slot 4: 1 ghz @ 52 vsels

Now, these vsel values are each 10 less than the stock values, and my first slot is underclocked by 100 mhz I believe. (Correct me if I'm wrong.) And I'm always tweaking these values too - trying to see how low I can get each slow without a problem. I've found that if I go too low then the phone will freeze and then reboot itself, so then I have changed a setting and used that until the next problem. It's a bit of a pain but I'm hoping it'll be worth it in the end.
Oh and PS I also use SetCPU for two profiles: Screen off - 250 mhz max and Battery < 30% - 500 mhz max

Quick Clock Advanced works completely different when compared to Android Overclock. QCA figures out the lowest VSEL values for your specific phone, with the stock clock speeds the voltages will end up quite a bit lower than stock. You don't actually need to tell it to undervolt since it figures out the minimum VSEL values for you.

Here's my current speeds w/ the VSEL values that QCA has calculated for me:
350 - 19
600 - 32
800 - 41
1000 - 51

I have not had a single reboot with these settings and as you can see the voltages are even lower than the settings you are using.

Ah, I didn't know it undervolted each slot for you. My mistake! Thanks for sharing your values. Maybe I'll get QCA since it seems a lot easier.

I like it since it takes the "guess work" out of finding the lowest voltage for your phone. You can still overclock and it will find the lowest voltages for those speeds rather than a higher voltage that will work for every phone.

Quick Clock doesn't REALLY take the guess work out of it. It just gives you a base line to start with. What I do is after I have all my base numbers I will use the preset for "balanced". It gives me good speed and a little less voltage at the same time and has allowed me to run my phone for two days with moderate usage before I need to charge.

I can get three days out of it if I don't use my phone much but who has the option to do that?......lol

Since QCA figures out your VSEL values for any clock speed and you don't need to test different VSEL settings to see if they cause a reboot I'd say it takes the guess work out of it. With you using "balanced", or any other preset, the VSEL values were calculated by QCA for your phone which saves all of the time testing for stable values. ;)

This is true. But you can actually tweak those vsels lower if you do it in increments of 1. I have done it. If bank 3 gives you a rated speed of 800mhz and a vsel of 55 you MAY be able to drop that vsel as low as 50.

This of course is just an example and may not reflect your actual settings. That's all i'm saying when I say QCA doesn't really take the guess work out of it. Sure, it makes it really easy but you can tweak it a little more if you wish and you are careful.

If you really want to get creative you can take those base numbers from QCA and throw them in Droid Overclock and setup yourself even better profiles.

Airmaxx I tried your settings and have had one random reboot when it was just sitting in my pocket. :( All phones aren't the same.

I was just posting my settings so you could see what QCA came up with, like you said each phone is different. If you try the app out let me know what you end up with for settings.

that is because of the "Stability Buffer." it purposefully gives you a small buffer because say your bare minimum voltage is 14 and you run your 300mhz slot at 14 it is VERY likely at some point you will run into a voltage fluctuation and your phone will crap out and reboot...

yes you can go lower (i usually run my stability buffer at 13 instead of 15)...but QCA gives you a VERY good base, tailored nicely to your specific phone...something jrummy's app does not do...

oh! and just for a heads up...QC was updated today...and the "slots" were inverted in the GUI...

so now stock settings would go

1000
800
600
300

instead of

300
600
800
1000

it might get confusing for some users if we keep listing them in the old way lol

Seems to be running good so far. No lag/freeze.
Im running:
350 MHz - 20 vsel
600 MHz - 33 vsel
800 MHz - 42 vsel
1000 MHz - 52 vsel

Thanks Airrmax....I hope its helps battery life...tomorrow will tell :)
