But they are different - they even LOOK different, as the AT&T model has a totally different case/chassis design.

In the end, THAT will end up screwing us over, because I think the others will be able to share cases, and we'll be in left field with this thing. I'm holding out hope the OtterBox makes their nice rugged cases for the Cappy.

The latest unlock thread on XDA reports of one person getting AT&T to unlock their phone. They paid full retail, faxed in receipt, Canadian DL, and form. AT&T unlocked it and he posted a video. Now AT&T is telling people they need to wait 90 days.

So the codes do exist, but it is a matter of getting AT&T to do the unlock.

Please don't spread misinformation - you just used a "TurboSIM"-like device to temporarily bypass the carrier lock. The phone is still locked, not unlocked.

Although it works, it's not an "unlocked phone," per se.

Those have been around for a while, especially during the early battle periods between iPhone jailbreakers and Apple iOS updates. During times of no jailbreaks, these things sold well.

It DOES work, will allow you to use about any SIM you want, but does NOT "unlock" the phone. However, an unlocked phone would allow you to insert any SIM you'd like, and not need the additional card you purchased.

I talked to AT&T and they dont have access to the codes. yet anyways. And if at&t doesn't the online unlockers wont. BUT we had the full flash to the EVO for cricKet before the device was released...are we this weak? what part of the NVRAM is the lock located? is there a calculator or something we can do about this? start with root. flash tmobile rom and be good?
 
FYI, AT&T does have it exclusively, since some models of the Galaxy have like, front cameras and other features and such. I really have no idea why they chose different features, but it was probably to stay exclusive to each carrier, while also putting their phones on all the carriers at the same time. I'd bet it has something to do with more profit.

TLDR; Send him the file dump requested in the above thread, along with $35 USD, and he'll send you a real genuine 100% un-reversable unlock code for your phone. Fast too, as long as he's awake, it's a one-man show at the moment so be patient!

This works for all versions of the Galaxy S, not just the Captivate. He unlocked my Bell Vibrant in a matter of minutes once I sent him the file dump and money (and zipped, it compresses down to 65kb).

Seriously, this works! But you can be sure Samsung or the carriers will fix this exploit with an OTA firmware update real soon, so act quick if you want it unlocked.
 
sending $35USD is one option but there are now guides available for those who want to do it freebie styles

Guys there is a free app called SGS unlock or SGS unlocker in the market that will email you the code. Works and is super easy.

If that fails, Go to XDA and follow their instructions.

Apparantly the app works great...unless you've updated to JH7 firmware in which case it's broken, if you're still on 6 though you're good to go it seems.
 
Unlocked mine without any issues. Tried a T-Mobile SIM. Got only edge on it. But I can see the phone status to be unlocked. Cool.
 
I have root access to my phone but I can't get it unlocked. Followed the post above but I couldn't get anything :( This is frustrating!

I just got this phone so have they changed things? any chance there will be a newer hack developed?
 
i just got a unlock code for a different brand phone (SE x10) off the net,, it was only 20 bux had the code in about 3 hrs,, worked great ,, fast and easy,,
 
they do quarantee,, but hey whatever you want,, you can do,, hell ive pissed more then 20 bux away in a evening,, and never even got a buzz
 
I cant use the SGS unlocker app as I have (accidentally) updated my phone....there is still a way but I need to root the phone which I cant as it voids my warranty...so called ATT guys yesterday and they said they can give the code for free but only after 90 days of purcahse...I guess I will wait for that..
 
^^^I called ATT and they said they would give the code after 30 days of purchase, but they don't have them as yet for the Captivate...different story with each rep
 
Hey guys I used cellunlocker.net the first method was through their "carrier" method which cost 5 bucks, but it came back not found, then I tried their "manufacturer" method which was a whopping 30 dollars, but they did manage to get me my unlock code for my samsung captivate...a little pricy, but seemed to work
