Root unlocked phones?

Is it possible to get a phone unlocked and use on vm? Years ago when I was on us cellular I had an unlocked Verizon phone. There's a store near me that advertises unlocking and custom roms. Could I possibly buy a galaxy for example and use it on vm?

While technicly yes, they won't do it. The other way I know is illegal and I won't even go there. Boost mobile seems good about that. You may have to find a store that will do it. Even if I would prefer you didn't leave the MT community.

Yes you can. But it won't work with 3G. It will be on 1X and it sucks. No MMS either. There's no point.

It always amazed me how people would put up with 1X data to have an iPhone on a network like Tmobile- no thanks! Course they recently changed that...

Seems like it's more trouble than it's worth to me, maybe just switch to Boost & get the S2 or buy a used Galaxy & run it on Tmobile or StraightTalk. Actually, buy a brand new Gnex for $350, set it up on StraightTalk & there you go! :)

Or you can stay with the MT and help the community get better and better

Ouch- that hurts... :(

The cell phone world evolves at a breakneck pace- I imagine it won't be too long before VM has something like the S2 or even the S3. The difference in the Android lineup they had in 2010 vs. now is insane, and I'm sure they'll have to keep up that pace of change if they want to stay competitive.

So, what dsmryder said, despite my own situation. "Do as I say, not as I do". ;)

With an S3 I might have to jump shipLOL

How can you get a gnex on straight talk? Do they have that phone or do you have to buy it somewhere and they will activate it? My parents offered to buy me a new phone for Christmas so I have a few months to see what happens

You buy either an unlocked phone (make sure it runs on the correct Straight Talk frequencies), a T-Mobile phone, or an AT&T phone and then order the sim card through Straight Talk for $15. Make a few APN changes and your set! It will run on HSPA+ (marketed as 4g, basically 3.5g) so it won't be true 4g speeds, but you can still expect 3-6mb/s download speeds. Plenty fast and WAY better than you can get using Virgin Mobile and for only $45 + tax. Can't beat that.

I actually just did the same thing. I went with an AT&T Galaxy S2 I got used online dirt cheap. Although I miss the MT community, I am happy overall with the switch. I even got $150 last weekend for my Triumph so the little money I spent to switch I got right back. :p

I would advise you to go with either the Galaxy Nexus or the Galaxy S3 since you're getting it as a gift. Do your research ahead of time to see if it works for you. Check out the Straight talk forums, check coverage maps, and make sure you get a phone that's compatible.

So you're saying I can get the Google gnex for 350 and pay 45 and probably get close to 4g coverage, in savannah ga, and expect updates since it's Google and already jellybean? Plus since it's a major phone there is probably a good dev community.and by Christmas it will be cheaper....you know it!

Yep- sounds about right! And since they're releasing a newer Nexus phone (LG) soon, I'd definitely keep my eye on the price of the current Nexus over the next couple months- it's got to go down.

But definitely check coverage in your area for both AT&T & Tmobile if you want to switch to StraightTalk. I also have read in the forums that they have an odd data cap situation where some people have been cut off after consistently high usage while others never seem to get dinged. I don't think they have a clear cap like VM (or most other carriers for that matter), it is at their discretion which can be good or bad depending I guess.

Yeah AT&T and t mobile are to much for the plan you get but I think they both have good coverage in savannah since it's a decent size city. And I've never gone over my 2 gig limit so that shouldn't be a problem. Also my friend went over his and didn't notice any Change in speed. I don't stream much music and never stream movies sup I don't think it should be a problem. Is it possible to get the s3 on straight talk? I don't really like the price/plans of TMobile or AT&T.

To answer your question, yes the S3 will work with Straight Talk but you won't purchase the phone through them. You need to find one either used or OFF CONTRACT and it doesn't need to be unlocked unless you plan on trying out multiple sim cards.

Activate the phone on straight talk after you purchase the compatible sim card from them using the BYOP (Bring Your Own Phone) deal.

AT&T:

- larger network, better coverage
- very aggressive data monitoring
- all post-paid features work (conditional call forwarding, call conferencing, Google Voice integration, etc)
- slower data speeds (typically 3-4mbps)

T-mobile:

- smaller network, poorer coverage outside urban areas
- apparently less strict on data usage
- prepaid feature set (no call forwarding/conferencing)
- faster data (typically 5-7mpbs)

One thing I do miss about the Motorola Triumph was how easy it was to root the phone and install custom ROMS. Other phones have different rooting techniques so if your a ROM junkie and like to hack your phone, this is something else to keep in mind. MTDEV and all other Triumph devs have done a great job at keeping it updated with the most current ROMS so thanks to them I got by using it for about a year. Of course when the price on the newer products come down we have to keep up on the hardware side of things, so that is the only reason I decided made the switch.

And like I said before... do your research. Watch videos, check other forums, check maps, check prices (Craigslist & ebay). Better to learn before you dive in and make the switch!
