Root Unrevoked Error

Seems rooting this phone of mine is becoming a bit of a pain in the backside, just tried rooting my phone again, this time using unrevoked 3, the error I have coming up after a couple of reboots is: Internal Error: Failed to unlock NAND Flash ????

What the hell does that mean guys, does this mean that somehow virgin media have locked it out, will this also stop me from flashing custom roms ?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Sorry to sound like a broken record, but the answer is in the faq.

A good question to ask yourself is "what are the chances I am the only person to ever have this problem?" Because if the chance is low, its worth reading the faq ;)

Thanks, but I found this on the "how to downgrade" site that you linked to at XDA, in the faq's:

Update:
Newer versions of unrevoked3 (from 3.21) can now root froyo ROMs directly, and a downgrade is no longer necessary if you just want to root and install custom recovery. (I ran 3.32)

could this be anything to do with my new HBOOT version which Reveloutionary flashed when I was enabling S-OFF ?

If you are S-off and it looks like you are, you have a few choices to root none of which need Unrevoked. It is all in the Revolutionary thread - on Tapatalk but a search should find it. Read it, read it again then follow it. Simples

You're already s-off? Well you just flash recovery and flash the revolutionary root zip which you don't need if you want custom roms. You just flash the Rom. This is in the revolutionary guide in the all things root sticky thread.

@saltire, need tapatalk lessons? ;)

Yes im already S-OFF but like I was saying before in my other thread, the rooting part isnt working, ive tried installing the revolutionary root zip file 3 times now via clockworkmod, everytime ive tried it, its said successful and enjoy, then when I reboot, I have no superuser in my apps draw.

So then I tried a different way, I downloaded superuser from market....
Installed fine.....
Though i'd give it a test run....
So I downloaded Titanuim backup........
Titanium backup reported it was unable to gain root access and would not work.
I figure im not rooted ?

So thats why ive tried the unrevoked way which gave me the NAND error.

Unrevoked won't unlock the NAND flash on a GSM device - that's what revolutionary has already done for you (because that's what S-Off means, that the NAND flash security is off).

Have you tried pressing the "problems" button on Ti Backup?

If, as you said in your other thread, your objective is to install a custom ROM, you don't actually need to root the current one. A custom recovery (which you have) is all that's needed to take a nandroid backup and install a new ROM, and custom ROMs are always pre-rooted. The only reason I can think of for rooting the current ROM is actually to run Ti Backup, but if you really can't make it work you might find that MyBackup will do the job instead (which does not require root to make an app/data backup).

Thankyou, I was after root access to do a full system and app backup, I wil try that my backup software.

I have been pulling apart PC's and building them since the day I came out of nappies, I love the things, writting little hacks, even buggered up the schools BBC's (Remember those) with a virus I wrote and that was when I was 15, that was back in the days of mainframes, if your 10 years younger than me then you prolly dont know what one of those is, im 39 now, but phones of any kind im am completely new to and dont understand them at all, im slowly picking them up, im not afraid to say in a complete noob in this field, but in another field, im a complete geek, been flashing firmware for drives etc and bios's for years and I imagine this is not that different, just got to learn how to do it and have clean underwear.

If you read pretty much any thread on flashing a custom rom for an andriod based phone, they all mention that you have to root first, if this is not the case, why say it, it just add's confusion, I dont really care about backing up my apps, I dont use that many, and the ones I do use I can just get back from market again after the flash is completed, i was more concerned about making a backup of the system incase something went wrong whilst flashing, so I wasnt left with nothing to restore.

Yes, because when you root it installs a custom recovery which allows you install their roms, the standard htc recovery will not do this.

Yeah, it's as Shauny says, generally you get the custom recovery when rooting. That's also what unrevoked does. Revolutionary is different: it unlocks the NAND first, then replaces the HTC recovery with a custom one, and after that you can use the custom recovery to root or flash.

Rooting tools are different for different phones, which isn't surprising as they are all basically hacks :). They also may change with time, e.g. revolutionary came after unrevoked, and unrevoked rendered earlier methods obselete. That's why we recommend the guides in this forum, because we, especially SUroot and Rastaman-FB, make sure that they are up to date.

BTW, I remember the BBC micro well, though it was if anything a little after my time - I wrote my first programs on punch cards

lol omg my dad was telling me about how he used to have to write programs on punch cards in his early days too, was saying after you printed this card out and ran it, if anything was wrong, you had to go back and start again, sounds a nightmare to me, thank god for AMD and Intel lol.

Just need to ask one last thing, I found a whole bunch of ROMs here:

HTC Desire ROMs | 4/5 | TheUnlockrTheUnlockr

Can I just go ahead and flash any of them or do I need to look into EXT2/3/4 my SDcard and flashing Radio's first too ?

Im aware of the procedure before physically flashing the rom, like running back up and restore first and wiping the cache, phone reset etc, just wanted to check the above question first.

Thankyou so much guys for your help so far.

Just follow the instructions in the threads over at xda where most of the roms link too. You wont have to flash a radio, yours is probably fine. I've had my desire for almost 2 years and haven't ever flashed a radio. Never found a rom yet that wouldn't run.

Thank you Shaun, im Sean by the way too, just spelled the other way lol, been thinking about EXT2/3/4 my SDcard anyway for Apps2sd to work properly, thats easy enough using linux live boot CD.

we recommend gparted here for partitioning, however i'm not familiar with linux, on a pc to comment on a boot cd.

You'll also find links to a bunch of ROMs here: Desire Index - Everything Desire is here! [2/Mar/2012] - xda-developers.

Shauny, a linux live CD will come with GParted, as that will be used if you choose to install from the CD to your HDD.

The worst thing that could happen with punch cards was if someone bumped into you when you were carrying them to the card reader :) I'm not quite old enough for that to have been a real problem for me though - they were gone by the time I started programming for real.

LMAO :D thank god those days are long gone.

Thanks for the link BTW. I quite fancy trying the Reflex-s and RevolutioN ROMs.

Someone on another forum just responded to why my rooting doesnt seem to be having any effect, not sure if this is possible but they said:

"You may not have enough free space on the /system partition and although the .zip reports a successfull installation, it may not install."

But damn they are slow to reply and respond on that whole forum so I thought id let you guys know as you've been extremely helpful.

OK just downloaded quick system info from market, says out of 250mb I only have 72kb left, guess he was right, not sure where all this has gone, will have to see about removing some unused junk.

Yes im already S-OFF but like I was saying before in my other thread

But that's where things get crossed. When you discuss the same issue in different threads, it gets confusing to people helping you.

Sometimes you have two sets of people asking two sets of questions and you end up doing a mix-and-match of things to resolve the issue, which actually could put you in a technically worse position than you started in.

It's definitely worth being careful to try and keep the same issue in one thread, even if you think you have a resolution but need help on following that process, it may not be the right resolution for you - but people will help you blindly reaching it if they have no knowledge of the previous discussions.

Might sound like I'm ranting but I'm just trying to help you to ensure you always get correct and the best advice from us old timers :)

OK and now for a good laugh, I cant delete system apps to free up any space in the system root unless im rooted, I cant root cos it would appear I dont have enough space, catch 22, any idea's ?

Flash a rooted stock Rom. It won't need a wipe if its a similar android version to what you have now

You didn't do anything like force apps to sd card did you?

Ok Thanks, force apps to sdcard ? apps that I could move off the phone using the built in apps2sd in froyo I moved to the sdcard yes, to free up the phones internal memory.

No there's a trick you can do using command line which forces apps that couldn't be moved to be movable. I ask because this messes up flashing super user.

Rooted Stock Rom is probably the easiest option though
