Unusual question.

Ok, I got a promotion at work and will be getting a little more per paycheck. (very good thing!) Anyway, I am thinking about getting another device and not sure what to get. I have a Droid X right now and it does all I ask of it now, but I have been thinking of getting the new Prime. But then I also think it might be nice to get a tablet.

What would you do? Prime would be nice, but like I said, the X works well but the Prime would be nice since it will get ICS and all the horsepower. If I go the tablet route, what would you prefer? I was thinking the Transformer, or even the iPad. (I know, I know, but they seem nice.)

I'm happy with my DX, and not really looking to replace it yet. Although I will admit the Prime and RAZR look like they might be nice. But I've been thinking about getting a tablet too, and I will get one of those before I get a new phone. I'm staying away from the iPad, too limiting for me. I had an iPhone 3Gs, and even jailbroken, it wasn't what I wanted. I have a friend who's an Apple loyalist, and he got an iPad2 for his birthday. He just mentioned yesterday that while the lack of Flash on his phone wasn't really a big deal, it was irritating to not have it on the iPad2 because it's aimed more at internet consumption, and there is plenty of Flash in the internet.

I've been looking at a couple tablets, mainly the Acer Iconia 10.1" and the Toshiba Thrive 10.1". Basically the same inside (1GHz Tegra 2 dual core, 1GB of RAM, nVidia GPU, GPS, Bluetooth, front and back cameras, 10.1" screen), but they differ on the outside. The Thrive is a little thicker and bigger, but it has a nice ruberized back and a user replaceable battery, while the Iconia has a smooth metal back and you can't get to the battery. I liked the way the Thrive felt in my hands better. But for the extra thickness, you get some bonus's the Iconia, or any other tablet, don't have. It has the standard MicroUSB and power plug, but also gets a full size USB port (plug in a memory stick or external drive), a full size HDMI port, and an SD Card slot. Not a MicroSD slot, but the big SD card. That's why I would go for the 8GB model of the Thrive, it will support up to a 128GB SD card in there, plenty of storage for a tablet! Those are my top two in the under $400 category, and I have the Thrive 8GB and a cover in my Amazon cart, I just haven't pulled the trigger yet. By the way, the cost for that right now is about $380 shipped for the tablet and case.

There is a rumor that the Prime will dock with a screen to become a tablet.

ASUS has been throwing this idea around too (read here)

I own a ASUS Transformer and love it. Have had no problems with it. Honeycomb is wonderful. Of course rumor has it (there's that pesky R word again) that the TF2 with Quad Core KalEl processor will be out soon (Q1 or Q2 2012...maybe)

I've thought about waiting for a next-gen ICS tablet with better everything, but I really love the idea of the full-sized HDMI, USB and SD Card slots, and I don't think there's a good chance of the next gen having all that, because everyone wants thinner and lighter units. I think I'll get the Thrive and just hope it either gets an official update update from Honeycomb to ICS from Toshiba, or at least a rooted ROM flash to ICS in the future. But I think it's about time to finally pull the trigger on the Thrive.

Well I have looked around and I think I'll go with the Nexus. I like the idea of a tablet, but just don't think I'll use it as much as I think I will. I know I will use a phone.

ASUS is supposed to announce this tablet on 11/9. If they announce it then I would think it would be available for this holiday season. This is what I have my eye on.

HP Touchpad (9.7") will be getting ICS, probably around the first of the year. We have an amazing team working on it, lead by Daligrin who did wonders for the Nook Color reader.

Gingerbread (CM7.1) is still currently in alpha status, but is quite usable as-is. My only problem is the wifi can be a little flaky, but we're only in week 2 of the release. They currently dual boot webOS and CM.

DailySteals has it for $245 shipped (Sunday only), O/W, Amazon for about $250+, but you can find a deal on fleeBay, if you're a patient sort. My wife and I have two of these and love them. :D

Tablet, shmablet. This is why I have a smart phone, so I don't have to have multiple devices. If I'm going to use a tablet as a computer, I'll just use a laptop. If i'm gonna use a tablet for it's touch screen capabilities, I'll just use the phone. Already have a laptop, so no need to buy anything as far as I'm concerned.
