Thanks, I've just tried this. Went into Villain Setup and downloaded "1.5 HAVS 1113Mhz + CFS (900mV min)sysfs interface". This is a Kernal right? Then I selected INSTALL. It says "need a recovery image" with the option to Download. Which I did. It then rebooted phone to ClockWorkMod recovery screen. From here I just selected Reboot.

Seems to be working ok, does that all sound right? I was a bit taken back by the "Download" button (only option) for recovery image, after pressing to install.
 
Yes, that's all correct. Villain Setup uses it's own copy of a recovery image (similar to the way ROM Manager works) - I forgot to mention that it would ask this.

HAVS-CFS should be good. The "sysfs interface" lets you adjust the voltage levels youself, but I'd not worry about that - it's for people who want to really fine-tune.

Use SetCPU To make sure that the minimum clock speed is turned down to 128 (I've remembered that the GV kernels have this speed as well now!). Also avoid the "performance" governor, as that will really burn battery - "ondemand" is fine.

Are you trying to confuse me more?!! :D

All I did was download and install kernall from within Villain Setup, then when it rebooted to Mod recovery screen, I chose "reboot system now". Should I have done something different at this point?
 
Actually that's a good point - I couldn't remember whether seeing clockworkmod was normal when using Villain Setup, so I just used it to flash the same kernel. And I didn't see the clockwork screen or have to reboot myself - it showed an install screen, then rebooted by itself without my intervention.

To check whether it worked, look at menu -> about phone and check the kernel version. Having flashed the GV1.5 HAVS CFS kernel mine now says "2.6.37-defrost-bravo+trip@trip-laptop #776". It's the number at the end that's key - this will differ for the default kernel.

If it's different, check in Villain Setup that the kernel has been downloaded. If it has, try to install again. If not, download then install.

If it doesn't work, see whether the file GingerVillain_1.5_havs_1113Mhz_cfs.zip is in /sdcard/defrostsetup (size 3.15 MB). If it's there you can boot into recovery and install that by hand. But it would seem odd if Villain Setup hasn't done it.
 
Hadron, you are right. I even went through the download recovery image that OP did and I still got what you got. Just the unpack icon with progress then reboot.

I have never seen the CWM interface using villain or defrost setup, although I'm sure it uses it.
 
I've never used GV so I have no idea of the software your using, but surely whoever wrote the code for it would know how to flash a kernel!
 
Indeed, and it does work. Thing is that the procedure is simply "select download, then select install", which is what Zola did. So it should all have worked, but seeing the clockwork menu during this seems anomalous...

Right, I think I've just gone and stuck a big confusion spoon into this cauldron of random and stirred it up real good. Anyway, I don't think it was correct first time around as the Kernal version ended with #777.

IIRC it went to recovery mode during/after the unzipping animation.

I've installed the Kernal again from Villain setup and it all seemed much more straight forward. After the unzipping pic there was a second or so of script, then the HTC screen, then Villain/Freeyourphone boot pic etc.... and loaded up fine. Now the Kernal version ends #776.

So, er, thanks! :) Again.

And to confirm, that should be it right?

EDIT: I notice from your sigs, you've moved onto GV 1.2. Didn't want the newb running away with things eh? (Fat chance) :D.
 
Yes, that looks right. Odd the first time, but oh well.

And yes, on 1.2 - flashed it first thing in the morning, then flashed the fix (in Villain Setup) in the evening! That's the risk when you flash the moment something comes out - occasionally there is a bug in it (but they are usually fixed quickly).
 
I didn't flash until after the fix was released. Then I didn't realise for an hour that the fix was a patch :)

Hmmm, the fix is for the mobile data activating whenver Wifi is turned off correct? Have suffered this problem a litttle but not the echo.

I guess I should apply the fix anyway.

Just seen that 1.3 is out too, gonna wait before flashing that.
 
I want to know more details about whats going on with the RIL before I flash. Want to know what I am flashing.

I just popped over to the XDA forum GV thread and there's a lot of questions about the RIL and I too thought I'd hang fire for a bit. Maybe see what people are saying when I get back in from work later.
 
Well the story isn't completely clear yet, but I've applied both 1.3 and the subsequent RIL update (after Matt confirmed it was ok on my radio). Still no incoming call to test echo fix though, just texts.

Funny thing: on my first attempt to apply the RIL patch I had the same thing as happened to Zola yesterday. A very brief install graphic, no text, then into clockworkmod menu. Being suspicious now I downloaded the RIL again and installed a second time, which gave a normal villain setup experience (install dialog then auto reboot). So it seems it does sometimes misbehave, though I'd not met this before.
 
The ril in setup is just the ril in 1.2 is it not? 1.3 returned to ril from 1.1 with the option to put the 1.2 ril in it?
 
I assume so - Richard certainly said that 1.3 reverted to the 1.1 RIL, but I didn't see him actually confirm that the update is the 1.2 RIL. Unless there's a third one out there that he's not mentioned though this would seem the obvious interpretation.
 
Thats what I thought. So if I have 1.2 now, with echo and wifi fix, it stands to reason that I wouldnt have any issues with 1.3 + 1.2 RIL.

However, why would richard revert to the 1.1 RIL? This leads me only to think that there are issues with the 1.2 RIL. If I could only get an answer from him as to why he reverted, maybe I can start to make sense of what is best for me.

I dont notice any issues.
 
This is all consistent with the warning that the 1.3 RIL patch is not compatible with all radios - if it's the 1.2 RIL, and that caused problems for some users, then reverting in 1.3 would also make sense.

Would be nice to have an explicit confirmation though. I've also not had any problems, bar the infamous delay.
 
Yeah just the delay for me, which wasn't that bad.

What problems were others having? So really, It maakes no difference to stay on 1.2 for me.
