I am currently running a Sprint Evo 4G with Android 2.3.5 and would like to upgrade it to Ice Cream Sandwich or higher. Does anyone have a link to instructions to do this? Thanks!

welcome to AF!!!!!!!!!!
are you rooted? do you have s-on or s-off? what recovery do you have?

if you are rooted and have a custom recovery then all you would have to do is flash an ics rom. i think the best one for ics is strike. but it is an aosp rom and not sense, so it will be different from what you are used to with your phone.

you can find strike here:http://androidforums.com/evo-4g-all-things-root/618281-list-utilities-apps-roms-kernels-og-evo.html under aosp and then ics.

What exactly does the recovery option in step 2 do for the phone?

well recovery is where the magic happens. recovery is a mini os that operates separately from the android os of the phone. it is where you flash custom roms, kernels, themes, mods and tweaks.

you will use it to make nandroid backups which is a backup just in case of something bad was to happen you will have a backup you can restore back to.

it is also used to wipe the phone. it can do a factory reset. it can wipe dalvik cache and cache and lastly it can wipe the rom clean. wiping is essential to flashing roms. you need a clean environment if you want a proper flash of the rom. flashing is the term we use to mean install of roms and kernels.

you need a custom recovery to complete the rooting process by either flashing the su file or flashing a rom. you will not be fully rooted until you do one or the other.
