Root Update rooted 2.2 phone

utny

Newbie
I rooted my phone a long time ago, it is 2.2.
I have a few apps that require me to be on at least 2.3.3

I see there are all these rooted updates I can get, but without much
explanation on what needs to be done to do it.

1. Is there one just for 2.2 - 2.3.3? or does it not matter what your coming from?
2. Will it wipe my phones data?
3. Do i just download them, and flash from memory like I installed super user?
4. Do i wipe the cache? and where are each of them, i can only ever find 1, people talk about 2 types of cache. (I see the one in the recovery tool)

Thanks for any help!

Hello there utny!
What rom are you on now?
You can most certainly flash another rom with the updates built in.:)
Check out this list here:
http://androidforums.com/evo-4g-all-things-root/618281-list-utilities-apps-roms-kernels-og-evo.html
for roms.

And basically to flash a rom, first make a nandroid backup via your recovery.
And yes, flashing a rom will wipe your device, so make sure your contacts are backed up from within your gmail/google account.
And as far as apps, use Titanium backup to backup user apps/data. Titanium Backup is available in the Play Store.
After the rom flash, you can download TB again to install your user apps/data. Just do not restore system apps.
And to flash the rom, download the rom of choice to your sd card. Do not unzip it.
From within recovery, wipe everything (including cache and dalvik cache ),except the sd card. Do not wipe the sd card :)
Then navigate to the rom from within recovery, and flash it.
If you need more assistance with the nandroid backup or flashing the rom, just ask and we will be glad to help:)
Better to ask too many questions, than not enough and then something goes wonky :)

Edit: and also just be sure that you do have the Evo 4g :)

Yes, it is an Evo 4g on 2.2.
Rom? All I did was root and install SU I didn't install anything different.

The purpose of the root was only to unlock the wireless tether ability, and that is still the only reason.

That's a lot of different roms, is there one that is just the basic 2.3.3 that I would of had
if I had 2.3.3 out of the box?

Ah, gotcha!
I would suggest as first downloading and flashing the MikG3.11 rom.
It's basically stock-ish with alot of bloatware removed and I believe it has the 2.3.5 version?? software.
You can find that rom in the list link I posted.

Do you remember having or installing a custom recovery?

Better yet, can you post back here what your bootloader screen says?
From your bootloader screen you can choose the recovery option. And then you can tell us what recovery you have. :)
Then from you recovery screen, you can reboot.

I have

ClockworkMod Recovery v2.6.0.1

o.k...lets do this first and change your recovery, make a nandroid backup, then flash the rom.
The reason to change the recovery, is CWM doesn't work too well on this device, and AmonRa recovery will be much better, and using AmonRa to make a nandroid backup will be good.

So, go here, http://androidforums.com/evo-4g-all...-rooting-gingerbread-2-3-5-dummies-guide.html

and click on "show" of the HTCDev method.
Then, skip down to step 2 "How to Get Recovery"
Then after you get the new recovery, you can continue with Step 3 and look for the "Flash a rom".
That will have the MikG rom link and instructions on how to flash it:D

Edit: ninj'd by G2435 :)

Sorry was gone for a few days, looking at that post it says:

"if you have software version 4.67.651.1 download this file:PC36IMG.zip

if you have software version 5.07.651.1 download this file:
PC36IMG_AmonRA-v2.3-hausmod_revA.zip"

Well, I have 3.70.651.1, I tried the one for the 4.67.651.1, and it said invalid when checking the PC36IMG file.

So, what do I need for my version?

Well, the one for version 4.67 should work.
It looks like it downloads in .zip form, so no need to rename it, or add/delete anything from the file name. Did you add an extra .zip to it at all?
And, be sure to put it on the sd card and not in any folder or bootloader will not find it.:)

Side Note:
In order for bootloader to find that file, 2 things need to be correct:
1. the file is named exactly PC36IMG.zip (which is how it downloads, so you need not edit that at all)
2. the file is on the "root" i.e., not in any folder, of the sd card.

Yes, it's on the root.
No, I didn't rename it, file extentions are not hidden.

The phone sees the file, it goes through a check of some kind then doesn't ask me to run it like last one I did. I'll redownload and try it again, if it does the same thing I'll make a video of what it says because it flashes by pretty quick.

Or, should i just use the recovery i have and just run this Rom?

Re DL'd the recovery, did the same thing when trying to load it, so I just went into my current recovery, made a backup, wiped all the cache and installed.

Install went fine from what i see, phone works, but a couple problems

1. Google store was updated to google play, after that the icon was blank and said app was no longer installed.
2. My contacts that i had synced to my gmail account have not shown up, any way to get them from the backup?
3. When plugging the phone into the computer, I'm spammed with found new hardware messages, and every time I look at notification bar it thinks I'm unplugging it.

Well, as far as issue number 1, by the time you read this, it may have mysteriously reappeared. No kidding but that has been an issue with some folks. :dontknow:
If, by the time you read this, you still don't have the playstore back, and you cannot find it in the app drawer, or in the "manage applications", then go into ES File explorer/settings/check for updates. Click on "check for updates" and it will tell you that an update is available. Click on "ok" and the Playstore will reappear, along with updating ES File explorer.

As far as issue 2, make sure you are signed into google/mail and you have a good signal.

Issue number 3, you will get the "new hardware found" message, but I am unclear when you say you are spammed with them. Do you mean constant notifications about it? And I am also unclear about your notification bar thinking it's unplugged.?

:)

1. Solved Is there an install file i can get for the play store? i went to their website and don't see one, when trying to install an app from website (browsing on phone) it says it will install shortly, well its been all night and nothing happened. (I have a signal extender in the house so i have full bars)

2. Other issues My calendar is back, but contacts are nowhere to be found. (full bars overnight)

3. If i have the phone plugged in to computer, and I'm doing things on it, it will constantly say found new hardware as i move around the phone. (USB Debugging is off, saw it was default on after install)

EDIT: I used an app called "Appextractor" and was able to restore contacts.
I tried to just restore the people data but that didn't work, I had to restore the apk + data.
But now i'm having the problem of the people icon crashing.
For me to make calls i have to go to phone, scroll down to the bottom of the call log, and there is the contacts list.

So, now I'm trying to find a people.apk or something to update and hope that'll work.

I also tried http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1370349, but that didn't work for me.

I did find an install for the google store.

ok good that you have the play store installed.

weird about google contacts. are you sure that you signed in with the right account? this is a new issue with mikg. the play store is a common issue.

maybe try and wipe dalvik cache, cache, and then re-flash the rom. you will not loose data or anything. hopefully that will fix it.

Yes it is the only account i have, and my calendar came back as it was.

I have contacts, if I scroll down the phone, but if i hit the people icon, it crashes.
So I am unable to add or edit any contacts at the moment.

I'll try to reflash it later tonight.

Did the placement of contacts move from the 2.2 to the 2.3.5?
Because the 2nd method i linked should have worked.
I created a test contact, then copied over the file in that location, and i'd still have the test contact and not my old contacts. So that file wasn't where the test contact was saved to. There were also 3 files instead of just the 1 that was in my recovery.

by switching out system data from a 2.2 rom to a 2.3.5 rom will most likely have a negative effect on your phone. there are some major changes from froyo to gingerbread and as you are finding out boinks your contact app.

that is why it is better to just wipe dalvik cache and cache and re-flash the rom. if that does not work then i would do a full wipe and flash mikg again.

Well, I'm trying to re-flash, but when trying to wipe dalvik cache the recovery doesn't pull up the menu, and the only way out is to remove my battery.
In the menu for the phone i have the option to wipe it but it restarts, is that just as good?

what menu on the phone? most wipes that is done from the phone is only cache. and when you say that "when trying to wipe dalvik cache the recovery doesn't pull up the menu" what menu? so no menu? is there an error or something? what recovery do you have?

I have ClockworkMod Recovery v2.6.0.1, when I select to wipe the cache it changes screens to yes/no, the old menu disappears as it should, but the new one doesn't show up.

The menu I see where I can do it when the phone is on normally is MikTweaks System tab, Maintenance

I tried to change the recovery tool, and ran into other problems I talked about earlier in this post.

When trying to just install the HtcContacts.apk it tries to install then says "Application not installed"
I tried giving it all kinds of permissions, tried with god mode, still won't install. (the apk from the rom zip)

i never heard of this issue with cwm before, however. and to be honest i would switch recoveries to amon ra or smelkus. i do not like clockwork mod, but that is up to you.

lets try a different method:

1.download amon_ra 2.3 recovery.img
2.move the file into the android folder
3.on your phone go to the bootloader menu screen, select the fastboot option. if you are not in the bootloader menu then power off the phone and then press and hold power+vol down.
4.on your computer press and hold shift while right clicking the android folder.
5.select open command window here option (windows 7/8)
6.enter command:
Code:
fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
7.from the bootloader menu reboot the phone.
congrats!!!!!!
now lastly the conacts stuff you are trying to do will not work that way. what rom are you on?

Have HTC sync installed
Moved all the files I DL'd to the android folder I made on comp
Went to bootloader, hit fastboot
It changed to fastboot usb when plugged into computer.
The computer gives me driver failed to install, it doesn't know what I plugged in.

Tried command, it just sits at waiting for device.

The Rom is MikG-v3.11

Yes it should **scratches head**, but lets start with something else, something simple here. :p Restart your computer, boot the phone up, and plug it in. Let's see if it recognizes it. If it does, great! Then go into bootloader/fastboot etc etc. :)
