UPDATE Your G1 manually

I guess everybody is like me....GOOGLE comes out with RC30 and I'm still

waiting for freaking RC29...O Wells....that's why we have the

Internet...Updated RC19 to RC29...........everything went well......Now

updating RC29 to RC 30........everything went well again.....

Things may not work if your using the factory 1GB SD card because there's a

partition from the factory...you have to format the card first......

whats root access?

Free reign to modify any and everything you want in the filesystem, with no troublesome warnings to stand in your way.

Also included are dire consequences if you don't know what you're doing or how to backup/restore whatever it is you're messing with.

When root the system assumes you know exactly what it is you're doing.

;)

Now the RC29 update link just given takes you to a file called

signed-kila-ota-115247-prereq.TC4-RC19+RC28.zip

I take it this means it only works if you are on RC19 now ?

So here's a bit of interesting news I've found. Not too sure if it was already posted but here goes:

The philosophy goes something like this: the great thing about Linux is that it's secure, and the great thing about open-source software is that it's thoroughly and constantly vetted for robustness. So to that end, Android should be pretty rock solid, right? Perhaps, but the overwhelming enormity of this particular bug definitely gives us pause. It turns out that G1 firmware revisions RC29 and earlier literally interpret everything you type as command-line operations, so if you happen across a legit command, it's going to get executed -- with superuser permissions, no less. No, seriously. Just go to the messaging app, the browser, or anywhere else a text box is convenient, type "reboot," press the enter key, and watch magic happen. We've tested this on two G1s, both with RC29 firmware, and have gotten this to consistently work on one of the two, so your mileage may vary -- but either way, this needed to get patched on the double. Fortunately, Google's been quick about it, rolling a fix into the RC30 build that's being rapidly pushed to users as we speak, but man... how did that get through?

I cant get this to work? I download file and move it over to sd card on g1 rename it update.zip and it says it cant open the file? do i have to unzip it into a folder and name folder update.zip? I have RC 28 now on my G1

I would really not worry about whether you have this or not. Everyone should have it by the 11th and most will have it in the next day or so.

It does not bring major enhancements and again you are just days away.

Well the only reason i was doing it was i read with the RC 30 i can use SD storage card for apps and not internal memory is this true? right now with RC 28 i can only use internal memory for apps. if what i read was true that is pretty big enhancment.

I was so glad to find the link for rc30 download. My G1 is still at rc19 and of course I really need an update.

I have followed the instructions on how to update and everything seemed fine until installing and it had an error. So, it asked me to restart it via home and back buttons - at the same time, but it won't restart. I had to take out the battery to get it restart. I have changed the file to update.zip and it did not work, so changed to update, and still do not work.

What should I do now?

This is getting to be a bit stupid. I've had my G1 for nearly 2 weeks now, longer than my co-worker, yet his phone has been updated to RC29 and now RC30 this weekend...while mine is still at RC19.

I'm annoyed because, there's a bug fix that lets my phone work with my macbook pro's wep wireless protocol. His phone works on the network but mine won't authenticate.

I shouldn't have to wait so long for a bug fix that's already fixed and available to others.

I got my phone two weeks ago and was stuck at RC19 all along. Did the update as listed above. No problems, first try (loaded via USB). Phone immediately prompted me to dl the RC30 update. I'm glad I did it. I say don't wait, promises to get everyone by 11/11 be damned. Interesting change (not necessarily bad) -- now I get a phone prompt asking me if I want to mount the SD card to my computer when I plug in the USB cord for recharging.

1. Download the RC30 update: https://android.clients.google.com/updates/signed-RC30-from-RC29-fat.1582cace.zip
2. Copy this downloaded file to your microsd card and rename it update.zip
3. Power off the phone.
4. Hold down the "Home" key + "red phone key" (power key) at the same time until a triangle with an exclamation point comes up
5. Hit Alt+L, you should see menu with choices to reset the phone etc.
6. Then hit Alt+S
7. It should start the update process and eventually reboot
8. If it gives you an error, try to re-copy the update file or try a different microsd card.

I did exactly what you posted and it failed to "Verify update package"

I formatted the sd card that came with the phone. I've tried formatting to FAT and FAT32.
Here is what's on my G1 screen right now.

Android system recovery utility
E:Can't open /cache/recovery/command

ALT+L - toggle log text display
ALT+S - apply sdcard:update.zip

Any advice?

NEVERMIND I finally got rc30 installed on my G1. Now, the internet do not work at all. Oh, other problem. XD

press MENU to unlock your phone, then press it again and touch Settings and scroll to the bottom of the display and touch About phone

When you have that up, just scroll to the bottom. On my replacement it just now shows: kila-user 1.0 TC4-RC19 yada yada yada (in other words, that's all you need) I'm on RC19 still (GPS never worked on my first phone, and this one I've had a day, and it's still at RC19, so I'm looking for RC30 manual upgrade, which I did to get to RC29 on the defective phone, but all the links to RC29 are broken now... Oh wait, I got the one above to work. Cool!)

Now you know what Release Candidate you are on.

rc28? i've read through this thread and haven't seen anything about rc28, unless i'm not looking hard enough. is this good or bad? should i update to 30 or will that be done automatically sometime later?

edit: nevermind...

I got a G1 in The Uk and I have checked my update. It is TC5-RC8. It is not like everyone because it is TC5 not TC4. So Is it ok if I update to RC29? Thank

Hi! I don't have a G1 yet, but I'm thinking about getting it, and I have a question. Is this the only way to update the G1? Or are there also automatic updates over wifi available?

The "normal" way is to let your carrier push out the update to you, but some of the eager fanboys here just want it "now". So rest easy, and let it come to you.

just did the RC29 update, followed the directions exactly and everything worked like clockwork! doing RC30 right now..

BAM ...im now RC30 ..

Does anyone know if there is the australian one floating around? I got a g1 from ebay so id like to update to the aussie version cause the way the us format for phone numbers is displayed is annoying
