Update

As xmr405o pointed out the version number, even though the same as the leaked version, could be a combined OTA of all the ones that were leaked. Although it would be odd imo to combine all the OTAs and throw them into an older version number. Then again we only know the version numbers by what was leaked. So 5.5.893 could in fact be 5.5.893, 5.6.893, 5.7.893, 5.7.894, and 5.8.894 all combined. No one is suppose to really know the revision numbers. That's why I was mentioning comparing the radio and kernels once the OTA is officially out. Some devs are going to have to pick at the OTA for us and let us know if what they released is old or new.

If you go back to my first post in this thread, #5, I asked if this was a new PDF, as I wasn't sure. The PDF's typically appear prior to an update being actually available. The first 4 numbers in the code at the bottom are 1211. Does this translate to Dec 2011? I believe when the last update was released for the Thunderbolt, the PDF said 1011 at the bottom and if I remember correctly it was released in October.

I didn't read the post on Droidlife so I could have jumped the gun on that. Since the PDFs displayed 5.5.893 as the update I had assumed this was an old PDF and something that someone mistakenly found and is spreading around. Considering that the print does show 1211 it is possible this is a new pdf and in fact could be for the OTA. I still think there's no official announcement yet but it looks like this will in fact be the OTA everyone is waiting for.

I am already on leaked 5.7.893 so I am sure I wont be able to apply the update. However I still want to see is the 5.5.893 is the same as the leaked 5.5.893 or if the 5.5.893 is the combination of all the leaked OTAs. All we gotta do now is wait and hopefully get some good responses from those finally getting an official OTA.

I have never heard of altering a build and keeping an already used build number from any manufacturer be it Moto, HTC or Blackberry. If/when they make changes a new build is compiled with a new build number. I believe this is done to avoid confusion and show progression. If this was some kind of a combined version, I'm sure we would have seen a new leak.

I sure hope that whatever VZW releases becomes a positive step for Bionic owners. Those of us who took the plunge into the 5.7.XXX builds and above will not currently be able to downgrade to a lower build number.

Three points ...

We are in violent agreement.

The reference ... http://androidforums.com/motorola-droid-bionic/438060-bionic-reference-terms-links.html ... shows the release numbers ... including the components.

I think Verizon will "protect" people who installed the leaks.

Please consider retiring the term "leaked OTA" they weren't OTAs they wre alpha/beta softwware leaks. The reason ... "leaked OTA" is misleading.

A better term might be "incremental leaked components (install at your own risk)".

Like thom has said, lets just wait until its releases. Im more curious about the radio and kernel rather than the system build number.

Those are my same thoughts about version #s. So if in fact that the OTA is 5.5.893, I am expecting more updates for the Bionic.

Not trying to get into an argument. And yes leaked OTA is kinda misleading but it's what I have been referring to all this time. I was just stating that we don't know what Moto is really releasing. I was just curious why they are rolling out a 5.5.893 rather than 5.8.894 or recent leaked filet. In another post someone pointed out a 5.5.893, 5.7.893, and 5.8.894 incremental update. As you pointed out in his post he doesn't really give us his source. I was suspecting an incremental update as it was odd to have a pdf with 5.5.893 when they are already testing 5.8.894. And yes I am going to have to wait and see what happens. Since no one has found an incremental leaked update from 5.7.893 to 5.8.894 I am wondering how this is going to play out.

Sooo. If we installed the leaks and it did Not fix the connection issues we are screwed?

Maybe there's a different issue with your connection issues based on location, tower, etc. I know Johnhalt was trying to take polls and came out with mixed results. We have yet to get a leak for the 5.8.894 for us 5.7.893 users and I believe there was an update on the kernel/radio on that. Maybe that leak might have the solution to your connection issues.

Thanks for the response. I guess Im eager to get some of the issues Im having resolved thats why I bit the bullet and went for the leak. But hey (insert Sarcasm here) ... Maybe CM9 will make me forget I ever had issues?

I am eager for ICS myself hehe. I wasn't really having connection problems but I'm a sucker for installing leaks.

I'm in software. After years of foolishess I start out not trustinging any software statements and the provider has to "prove themselves to me". The alternative many times was painful.

I have installed none of the leaks.

I have watched the process and tried to capture some iformation that would be helpful.

Some leak installers are in a tenuous situation right now and Verizon could nail them to the wall.

That would be preety dumb in my opinion becuse all Motorola had to do was leak the software and read the alpha/beta test reports while providing ZERO support to the testers. If it was my decison I would want to protect that.

How the numbers will work out is simple ... they are only numbers ... they prevent some things from happening ... they can be changed witout changing any code ... my GUESS is tha they will be changes to allow testers who could be really nailed to be allowed to instal a single upgrad that upgrades everything (OTA this time).

How about 5.10.886?

You are right numbers are numbers. Yes for those of us who installed the leaks we are in a predicament. I do hope Motorola pushes an update that will allow those of us who installed leaks to upgrade. No one can really understand the numbering system that software developers use other than the developers themselves. I'm gonna wait it out and try to remain calm about it.
