Root Update

Hey, guys. Here's the update that was downloaded to my SD card. I haven't had a chance to pick it apart, nor did I make it flashable. This is in pure update form, but I figure the devs and maybe not-devs would like to download/take a look at it, in case everyone doesn't have it ;)

Here is the firmware only that is flashable via bootloader. I have removed the recovery and the hboot, so this is the radio and rcdata stuff only. I have flashed and confirmed working.

Krowley, question. Once you flash the firmware, do you know if you can use a custom rom...or do you need to flash it each time?

Yes you can. I flashed this while running a Sense GB rom. Like I said, this is the firmware only. I am looking into the system patch files now, but I am not as familiar with those. I am seeing better signal strength and no fluctuations like I have previously even with the Sprint firmware on it. This is easily flashed back to old VM or Sprint firmware, so really you have nothing to lose in giving it a try. Now that being said, my standard disclaimer of I am not responsible if you break you phone. I have flashed this exact file through bootloader and all is well.

Ok, so I am not going to accept this having made my phone the Evo 3d. But, I put back the original Hboot and now I just need to stock recovery, does anyone know where I can find it?

Actually, since this thing has a recovery in it, would it be safe to accept this on a custom rom phone since it will overwrite the custom recovery? I recall the update for the Optimus V did that, but i'm just trying to guess here.

To be honest, I can't say for certain. I would ASSUME that it could work, but I don't want to say go ahead...because I'd hate to see you with a brick on your hands.

My thought on the update, or question I should say, since its a firmware update am I correct to assume that once you have it, you're set?

Because I wouldn't want to flash it every single time I do a ROM, because that would be tedious with how often I change ROMs.

Well lucky for us I have an Evo V that was my dad's that he has to send back to Virgin anyways :) So, I accepted it being on Shooter's stock rom with root, as well as the 1.1.1 TWRP recovery. The update simply reboots to our recovery and TWRP says something about aborting because it could not handle the file. So basically you simply cannot install this on a custom ROM, we need stock rom. At least it does not brick the phone or anything, I rebooted and am back up to my rom and everything is happy again :p

Can anyone supply a stock recovery that can be installed on our phone without having to go through the entire RUU process please?

Here is a flashable zip of the /system patches. This will flash with Harmonia in a customer recovery(4EXT). I have modified the updater script to allow it to flash. I removed the framework files because they are odex and Harmonia is not. This will patch the system files and libs from the OTA. Again, my standard disclaimer of you are responsible for you own action. I did a clean install of Harmonia and flashed this on top of it with no issues. This may work on other roms, but I have not and will not test. I am not sure what can be done to make the framework files deodex. That is above my pay grade. So at this point with the 2 zips I have provided you will have the full OTA minus the framework patches.

I can't seem to find one...

The RUU isn't that bad, though. It's pretty painless, and it doesn't take too long.

I'm running stock anyways, so I guess I'll flash the RUU, install update, then put a new recovery on....man I just feel too lazy for that. :D

Ok, so from the sounds of the update, are we at 4.0.4 now? They made it sound like in the description we have new features and performance enhancements.

Installed it through the bootloader, hopefully it helps with the fluctuations.. Thanks Krowley3 for tearing it apart, all I needed was the radio files, defiantly didnt want to change the Hboot while I am running AOKP.

So for those on stock that did the update, how's the phone now? Is the signal better and not fluctuating? Is the 3g faster? What exactly is this update noticeably addressing?

Signal still fluctuates from 3g to 1x. No sms error, though. Download speeds seem the same to me, really.

Folks, this file partially borks root on my phone and slows it to a crawl. Root checker complains of system slowness and SuperSU (and anything else that needs it) won't run. Easily fixable by reflashing the ROM, but I wouldn't recommend flashing it. I'm on Harmonia BTW. I flashed the other file with no problems.

Would this work on MeanRom or Mobster ROM Sense V3?

This is true as far as the Superuser part goes, but easily fixable. I am sorry I just haven't had time to update my post. Reflashing the rom will take away the patches. If you would like to still try this, do the following. This is the exact steps I have taken and have all the patches and updated libs in place in Harmonia. I do not experience any slowness at all.

  1. Flash ROM(Harmonia)
  2. Flash OTA file that I uploaded
  3. Flash this SU Patch(http://downloads.androidsu.com/superuser/Superuser-3.0.7-efghi-signed.zip)

Reboot.....Profit

I have not and will not be testing this. I do not see why not and there really is no harm in trying. These are just patches to files and libs already there. The worst that could happen is a bootloop in which a wipe and reflash of the rom should fix. So basically, it could and should work but I will not be verifying it myself because I am happy with my setup at the moment.

i have downloaded the zips provided by Krowley 3. It looks like the first one is flashable through bootloader and second one flashable through 4ext. has anyone tried them ? Aldamon pointed out his experience with the 4ext flashable zip, is anyone experiencing that too ? And will flashing this fix hinder my ability to update my rom down the road ? I run Harmonia, S-on, bootloader unlocked and have TWRP 1.1.1 (will flash 4ext to do this fix).

maybe its time to start a new How To thread.... to clean up the confusion a bit ....
and please forgive my noobness.... to flash the OTA in bootloader, do i just type

fastboot flash Filename.zip?

OK thanks!

If you would like to do so, please do. Feel free to use the zips I have created. I really dont have the time to keep up with questions and such. I do know they both work. I currently have them both installed without a single issue. The only issue is that flashing the patches zip in recovery does erase the SU binary. It is fixable by flashing the SU patch that I linked to (http://downloads.androidsu.com/superuser/Superuser-3.0.7-efghi-signed.zip ). There really is nothing to all this and it is all reversible. I just did these up real quick to help you guys out. I wanted to install them myself and figured I would share, but really dont have it in me to maintain a thread about it at this point. Please let me know if you guys have questions and I will do my best to answer them when I can.
