Yes to the flashable zip, but for some reason, de-odexing the system causes stability issues. I've been trying for 3 days without luck. I'm hoping others do better then I have.
As for custom kernel, technically you're running one now. It doesn't have overclock or any fancy stuff, but it is a kernel written by TDM. I'm sure he'll be putting out further tweaks once he gets to play with it for a while.
does the Pwnage tool install a new kernel?
Yes. It has to. Stock kernel will not boot ICS without the locked boot chain. The kernel is a combination of TDM's Zimage and stocks Ramdisk with the security binary taken out of the ram disk.

On October 27, 2012 - The Spectrum development team made a breakthrough, the Earth Stopped, the third time, and they've unlocked the Spectrum's bootloader.
Just doing this to keep track of the dates, and accomplishments.
So, I wonder where all these members that said they'd develop after ICS was released are? Whatever the case, they have certainly missed out if they switched devices.

I just ran it, and got the same error messages, but Rom Manager acts like I don't have CWM installed. FWIW, I am using windows 7, and had folder unzipped to c:, made no modifications. Now my home button doesn't work, and I have no lockscreen. I had that issue when I first updated to official ICS through LG software update tool, and a master reset fixed it. I'd prefer not to do another master reset, but I can if I have to. Is it possible this process unlocked the bootloader but failed to install CWM? If that's the case, could I try installing CWM through ROM manager or am I still at risk to brick the phone?
Thanks everyone for your hard work in developing this tool, can't wait to get it working so I can make a backup.

As stated above, First time I went into Rom Manager, it said I didn't have CWM installed. It wouldn't let me reboot to recovery. I rebooted, uninstalled Rom Manager, reinstalled it, launched it again. It then allowed me to boot to recovery, and I have CWM touch! Making a backup now, hoping I won't have to wipe everything to resolve the lock screen/home button issue. Anyone else having this problem or hear of a reason for it or better yet a fix? I haven't frozen any stock apps yet.
The lock screen disappearing is almost always due to restoring files with titanium backup or romtoolbox. For me, I can't restore beautiful widgets without losing my lock screen. For you, it may be different, but it's almost always because the person restored something. I fully understand now why VZW internal docks say factory wipe your phone when taking the update.
Also, use rommanager and choose "reboot to recovery" . I can all but guarantee that you will be in recovery on reboot. If you see the standard recovery thou, it means your script went wrong.
That works even though we don't have deodexed ROM? I was afraid to try, based on the instructions on OP of that link.
Hmm, I do use Titanium and both times had restored a few apps, but the problem didn't happen right after first restore. Perhaps there are some apps that will trigger the home button issue while others don't. Also, Titanium gave error message when I attempted to restore android ID after ICS update, error was "Operation Failed". I've never had that happen in any previous instances, with this phone on GB roms or any other phone. I checked the FAQ on titanium's website and didn't see anything about that. Has anyone else had that fail after updating spectrum to ICS? Any other way to restore previous android ID other than TiBU?

Ok I think the problem is XP uses "Documents and Settings" and Vista and newer use "Users" I think the spaces in the name may be causing a problem in the script. I've seen this before when writing batch files.
It would probably fail if you put it in c:\a b c
When I going from v4 to v6 and tried to restore i was getting a similar message. Ever since then I havent been using tib. Try antek app manager.

successfully made a backup in CWM, wipe data, wipe dalvik, wipe battery stats, restore backup. Seemed like it was going fine, then it stopped with an error "failed to restore /system."
I rebooted phone, now its totally wiped, started over at setup wizard. I'm going to make a new backup to have a pure stock backup file, but I'm wondering if the problem is with CWM creating bad backup, or problem with CWM restoring backups? Or was it just a fluke? After creating this clean backup, I'm going to try restoring again from the first backup, that has all my apps installed, which I made when the lockscreen/home button problem popped up, see if restore is successful, and if so is home button/lockscreen problem persistent in the backup.
Has anyone successfully backed up and restored from CWM after ICS yet?
What are the chances that I could brick the phone if I try to restore a GB backup I still have on my SD card? Admin81 suggested to use antek instead of TiB. I'm thinking of restoring a GB backup that has all the apps/data I'd like to have with ICS, download antek, make backups of the apps, wipe data, then restore the clean ICS nandroid, then use antek to restore the apps. It would be alot of work, but if it means not having to redownload ALL my apps and lose two weeks of Beastie Bay progress, it'll be worth it. I'm just worried about trying to switch back and forth between GB and ICS.

Change your setting in CWM recovery to do .tar backups instead of blobs. The blobs may use less space on your sdcard, but restoring them seems to be hit or miss.

Yes, my ID restore failed also. A complete factoyr restore with sdcard wipe seemed to fix the problem. I backed up media files and TitaniumBackup folder to PC before restore/wipe then reinstalled via USB and all is well as far as I know but I haven't unlocked the bootloader. I'm kind of a NOOB and want more feedback on the problems the veterans are experiencing before I go that route.
DTA: My apologies if I offended you or anyone else on the team. That was not my intention to have it come across that way. My only excuse is, well, let's just say that I didn't post that at 5am because I got up early! I had actually bricked the phone once already that night (totally due to my own late-night stupidity - I know what I did wrong to cause it) so I was really more interested in knowing WTF I was doing wrong this time.
You mentioned something I was curious about. I know flashing the bootloader wouldn't touch the /data partition, but... I thought that flashing the phone using this method [Flashing LG signed Firmware - LG Spectrum - RootzWiki] and a stock V7 .cab would wipe everything but the /sdcard? That's what I was surprised about - that flashing the stock V7 .cab didn't blow everything away.
I did a full factory restore and data wipe after flashing the stock V7 cab anyway, just in case something didn't load right over the course of my updating from BO/BP: reloading the stock V6, OTA update...
Will be re-attempting this shortly.

That means a flashable zip is on the horizon?
We'll start with .jar files (framework files). When you boot a phone, the phone dalvik virtual machine reads each .jar and pulls out certain data, and puts it in /data, to make start up easier and faster. On odex'd roms (typically what you get from stock), this data is already in a file outside the jar, with a .odex extension on the end. This makes for faster start up that first time. Each file that has been pre-odex'd has been linked to each other thou via hash sum, so trying to edits to it will lock down a system on boot. This makes it hard to theme your system with any interface tweaks. De-odexing a system means sticking that .odex file back inside the .jar . It's not as simple as just moving the file, but same premis (you can google for more info). This means that the files are no longer linked to each other and you can edit them (at the small cost of some initial start up time).
