Root **updated**root method for GingerBread use at your own risk*

I would like to post this for any of the newbies out there that may be chomping at the bit to root and all.

As you may or may not know the Inc2 only just recently got a valid method of rooting. With that said now that the GB update has rolled out anyone that has not rooted or would like to keep root should HOLD OFF for a little while so that the Devs get a chance to get their hands dirty with the new build. You don't want to get stuck on a certain version because you were impatient.

here are the links for the root method via Revolutionary, use at your own risk.

So you think they'll be able to root the gb shortly? I wanted to root note in case they can't later down the road...

Nothing that happens with the recent update will effect people who have already rooted ... root doesn't just go away. It is impossible to be stuck on a version once rooted because you can flash a new rom.

you sir are incorrect. If you are simply rooted but stock and accept the new GB you will lose Root.

If you jump to GB and there isn't a way to root it yet then you are stuck on GB until a root method comes out.

Also the same rooting methods for Froyo might not necessarily work on GB.

perfect example is for the DroidX Froyo was rooted with Z4 however the GB we received is not rootable at all.

So what you're saying is that even though I am rooted, I could still install the official OTA update? I just checked if a new update was available, it's not. Haven't all of the updates been sent out? When my Eris was rooted early on I never had an option for an official update.

you two misunderstood eachother, i think thetomlin2 was saying if your rooted on froyo you can always flash a rooted GB rom or unroot and update if needed; so its ok to skip the update for now. but if you do update now and GB is unrootable youll probably be stuck unless HTC puts out a way to get back to froyo (if GB is terrible) like on a few other phones

Sorta ... I was saying that if you rooted in Froyo the official OTA update wont come to your phone ... at-least that's how I understand it. With a rooted phone you could flash any ROMs available.

If you do the official OTA update to gingerbread you could be stuck if root is never attained on gingerbread. Like you said McLovlein, there would be no way to go back to Froyo if that's something you wanted to do.

If any of that is wrong, please correct me.

We're all saying the same pretty much. Which is be cautious with the new gb update regarding rooting.
@thetomlin usually even if your rooted but stock you can still manually pull the update. However if you're rooted and have removed or frozen any bloat or altered any system files with a rom or theme then u are correct in that the update won't even show up on your phone.

Thats were the misunderstanding came from ... I have a custom ROM on my DInc2 and had one on my Eris too ... thats why there isn't/wasn't an update.

I am a total noob to this form of rooting so maybe I can help from a noobs perspective and tell you what I did -- I am now running a Rooted DINC2 with the latest GB and Radio:

I *did not* accept the over the air update. The one you get on your stock phone even though it was available. If you do that you have to wait like others are saying.

I followed the instructions at AlphaRev X - Make it your phone
I recall it asking me if I wanted to flash Clockworkmod and I did.
NOTE: There is an IRC channel link here and you can go there and ask questions, they were friendly and helpful.

If you didn't do that step where it asks you to install the Clockwordmod you will have to follow these instructions (As I said I did it but being a noob I did something that wiped it out... So, I had to do this to get it back.)
[Info] After AlpharevX: install Clockworkmod, root & more - xda-developers
Viola, you get Clockworkmod back.

I then installed a program from the App store called Rom Manager.
In this program on my phone I ran "Backup current ROM" in case I noob'd something else up.

I then followed the following instructions here:
[ROM] RMK Ginger Sense r1: *Official* 2.18.605.4 (Rooted/Deodexed/Debloat) [7/11/11] - xda-developers
I also followed the instructions to upgrade the radio and Touchpad firmware, its the reply underneath.

After all the reading and playing, I am comfortable with flashing any mod if I get the urge but alas, my whole goal was to get a rooted GB phone and I am happy.

Hope this helps someone.

PS. If you root your phone my understanding is that at this time there is no way to unroot it completely. But I could care less. WIFI tether ohh yeah!

As Trophynuts stated -- DISCLAIMER, THIS HAS THE POSSIBILITY OF BRICKING YOUR PHONE, IT WORKED FOR ME BUT THAT DOESN'T MEAN IT WILL WORK FOR YOU.

this is good info. However i just want to warn people of this

Disclaimer: This is a one-time release. Unless a problem can be identified with the changes mentioned above (rooting, deodexing, etc), it will not be updated or supported. In other words, use this as-is or find a ROM which uses this release as its' base if you would like support and/or expect to see changes.

reading through that post it seems like there are other roms about to drop for the Dinc2 based off of the GB build. However unless i'm missing something i still don't see a safe recovery method in case you brick your device. Does anyone else have any info on that?

Not sure if this helps with your question, but I did do this before using the other rom I listed above:
How To Update HTC Droid Incredible 2 to Gingerbread 2.3 Firmware | Android Advices
It appears to be the official "packaged" GB from HTC for non OTA upgrade (It upgrades the radio as well). It worked fine but by doing this it is what wiped out my root and Clockworkmod. Once I got Clockworkmod back on my phone I was able to re-root by using the "To root:" instructions:
[Info] After AlpharevX: install Clockworkmod, root & more - xda-developers
After that, I backed up the official rom and applied the rom listed above. Since then I have swapped back and forth between the two to see if the ROM above exhibited any ill behavior and have had no problem going back and forth. Not saying it will always be that way but for now I feel comfortable with the backups I have.

Thanks.

So let me get this straight... you're on 2.3.3 and alpharevx succesfully rooted your phone?

Other way around start out on froyo, root then apply this rom.

Just like on the dx. We can't root gb but from froyo we can put a pre rooted gb build on.

I woke up this morning and GB was updated overnight without even prompting me to accept. I was going to root this weekend, now I am stuck!!

Does anybody know if we can sbf yet?
I just deferred my update another five days to buy me some time. Too busy renovating my condo and doing college to root right now...
