Root **updated**root method for GingerBread use at your own risk*

I updated to 2.3.3 without realizing it, so now I am stuck with an unrootable, bloatware infested device. I hope a working root method comes out soon.

I'm with you. I absolutely love this phone and the only reason I want to root is because I really, really miss my wireless tether. I'm not even going to mess with any ROM's. I just want my tether back. :(. Thank you dev's for hashing this all out for us! :) I will be patient.

so what your saying is the only thing your interested in is stealing free tethering services from VZW?

It's debatable whether or not tethering the phone without paying extra is "stealing". You are, after all, already paying to connect to the network with the phone. Why is it necessary to pay again to allow a computer to connect to the network through the phone? The answer is because they can charge you whatever they want for whatever they want, but that doesn't make it ethical. From VZW's point of view you're already violating the contract by rooting the phone. Is rooting the phone "stealing"? Years ago when VCRs were the cutting edge technology the television networks said it was illegal to record their broadcasts. The courts eventually told them they were wrong. What constitutes "fair use" is a legal definition that can be challenged and changed.

Sorry if I'm wrong as I'm an android noob...but couldn't you just purchase EasyTether Pro for $10 and not have to root? Seems like a paltry amount to pay if you really need it that bad.

I have one thing to add about tethering in GB. There is code in GB that prevents tethering apps from working now. AFAIK only pdanet works on GB. Yet another reason to flash back to Froyo when a GB exploit is found. I'm just not seeing the benefits of GB over Froyo as a whole what with the bugs. Really a shame. However the I2 is a pretty good phone without root. In fact I haven't rooted my Froyo I2 yet. I miss adfree android as some sites (like xda) constantly reload pages because of the ads while you browse. The bloat is annoying but not a deal breaker. Reboot was a root feature I liked but the I2 has it. I'm surprised it doesn't have a screen capture like the Galaxy phones.

Sense2 finally allows multiple exchange accounts which was another reason flashing to AOSP was important in case it didn't support it. I'm not sold that sense is reliable as blur when it comes to exchange. Some contacts mysteriously disappeared from our servers in my last set of phone swaps but it involved multiple phones simultaneously with phones sharing contact folders among each other.
I digress

This phone isn't bad out of box. I use launcherpro instead of sense. That also allows me to hide the bloat. I know it's still there, but at least it's out of sight until I get this bad boy rooted.

I just want like a root alarm. i want to know the second their is a root for the DINC2. I had a INC1 but i had to get an insurance replacement and now im stuck with a INC2. the first generation was far superior IMO. So many little things i notice that are awry with the inc2. I am sure once i can gain root and really make it my own i'll be pleased. plus i need tether for my college apt.
<3 devs

Forgive me for sounding like a noob but, I thought I read somewhere that you can only use the alpharev to root the 97 hboot right? But I have the gb ota and have the 97 hboot.. Does that mean anything?

The hboot stayed the same for this ROM, but the kernel was modified and patched all the previously known root exploits. That is why this version can no longer user AlphaRevX/Revolutionary to gain S-OFF.

OH MY GOD!!! I woke up to a horrible sight this morning... I picked up my phone and noticed that my new email notification color was orange... WTF is that I wondered? So I dragged down the menu from the top to investigate and started to become very worried when I saw that interface had changed...

Immediately I went to settings to check my version number and was horrified to see. 2.3.3 Somehow my phone updated itself without my consent! WTF!?!?! I'm so pissed, I was waiting for a good rom to come out that was bug free and rated well, now I'm screwed :(

Yeah, I think when the phone updates, it only gives you like 30 seconds to decline it. There is a rumor on XDA that there is a temp root that will work for us. The catch is it won't be released until another device hits the stores.

The reason being, if they release it to us now, HTC will patch it for future models. This way they can use it to root 2 or 3 phones, not just ours.

Again, this is only a rumor. So it should be taken with a grain of salt.

If it is true, we just would be waiting for a new phone to drop. I think the Vigor drops on Verizon soon. It could even be for another HTC phone, on a different carrier.

Revolutionary just updated to support the OG Evo on Gingerbread. Here's to hoping that rolls to the Incredible 2 soon.

I tried to gain s-off with revolutionary, but was unable to. The documents page of their website says it is only for GB!

Any other ideas of how i can gain s-off?
