Upgrade question

I have a hero and was wondering if this is a noticeable upgrade? Would I be happy with it coming from the Hero? I don't quite grasp phone speeds in contrast to computer speeds. I'm on the Sprint friends & family plan so I can get the Evo or Epic but would prefer a keyboard, and to stick with HTC. Do you think this phone will be available for the friends and family?

I'm coming from a Hero myself and its one hell of an upgrade. I will miss cm6 but ill put up with sense for the keyboard.

It should be able to be gotten on any type of plan.

I just want a phone that isn't a slug every time I use it. Plus I like how thin it looks in comparison to the Epic. But a big, bonus to me is its HTC. Samsung has a bad track record for support.

I just got the phone today and I also came from a Hero. I'm loving the phone so far! I'm not exactly packed with knowledge on all the techy (speeds, internal workings, etc..) about this stuff, but from what I'm experiencing right now it's faster than my Hero was. What I like is that it is still an HTC so the layout and interface is pretty much exactly the same which makes it feel like home. This is my first phone with a sliding keyboard and I find it easy to use. The buttons are spaced far enough apart where you don't hit the wrong key every time you try to type. With a case on it the top row becomes slightly more difficult to use but I wouldn't but the label of "difficult" on it. The only other thing would be that the case also makes the actual slide a little stiffer but it's not a big deal and when you consider the protection you're getting from the case, it's well worth it. Like I said earlier, I'm enjoying the phone and I feel like it is an upgrade from my Hero (which I thoroughly enjoyed). Hope that helps some!

If you prefer a physical keyboard and you want a HTC phone, this will be a noticeable upgrade from the Hero;) As long as your plan has a data package, you can get any phone you want

it is a huge upgrade....

you will not be disappointed with performance...
it would be hard for you to stress this phone with processing needs.

games cant push the phone too much.

Hero doesn't even compare to this device speedwise. The only time I've got it to lag was when Sense was still doing all its syncing at bootup. Once we can get rid of Sense it will be $$$$.

I like the keyboard enough that I haven't reinstalled swype yet. I still will install it for one handed texting, but I've made the transition back to a hardware keyboard pretty quickly with this thing.

EDIT--And when I say lag there I mean it slowed down a little, not the "is it still running?" pauses on my Hero.

According to my brother who is a Sprint Employee, the Shift will be available to Friends and Family plan members on the 10th, so it will be available out of the gate. Looks like Sprint got its' act together and ordered enough phones to keep enough stock for Friends and Family. The EVO still has a shortage issue as far as I know - enough that they are sending out refurbs to people who have problems and need a replacement phone.
