Root Upgrading from 2.3.15 to 2.3.340

I've searched multiple forums regarding this issue, but the answers are never really clear or conflict with one another, so I decided to post a question about it here.

I'm currently running Apex 1.0.2 with the Gingerbread theme on my Droid X, so I'm rooted and deodexed, with version 2.3.15. I got my Droid X about 2 months ago, so I'm NOT on the leaked 2.2. I just wanted to make sure that I have the right idea about how to go about upgrading to 2.3.40. My phone has already asked me multiple times if I want to install the upgrade so far.

Is this how I would go about upgrading?:
1. Restore a Nandroid backup of my phone back to stock 2.2 BEFORE I deodexed it. It was created literally right after I rooted the phone.

2. Install the update by going to "About Phone" in Settings and searching for updates. I assume that since the phone has already detected the update for me, it will detect it again when I restore back to an old Nandroid...? Or is this not true?

3. Root using Z4.

4. Deodex using the adb commands described in this post: http://androidforums.com/droid-x-al...ing-etc-anything-worry-about.html#post1982031

5. Now, I should be safe to install Apex 1.3.

Please let me know if I have the right steps or if I'm missing something. Thanks so much!

Looks good. Exactly what I did, but you do not have to deodex before installing Apex...it does it for you.

I did have to flash Black Glass Back To Stock Odexed in order to get the update to take...even though I had a original backup from right after rooting. But, I also loaded my current user data backup through advanced restore to that original backup so I wouldn't lose anything (that might have been why it wouldn't take with out flashing the BG). But once I did that, flashed the BG back to stock file...it updated just fine, then I flashed Apex 1.3 with out wiping and didn't lose a thing. :D

I wonder if I need to use the back to stock Odex flash, then go back

Although my phone has ODEX files in the system app folder.

No I'm not bricked. I just couldn't get sbf to take.

Have updated my thread with findings, incase it might help others.

applying update as I type this.

Thanks for your confirmation and suggestions! I successfully updated using the steps I listed above, except without deodexing manually as mxsjw pointed out, and using the z4root version that Steven58 posted. (:
