Upgrading ROM and Kernal

Just a quickie (you know me ;) )

Currently using Villain 1.4 and Kernal KF2. I want to upgrade to KG3 and Villain 2.3 and was wondering do I merely start the CF root procedure from the start or can I merely "bolt" on so to speak.

Ive backed up using CWM but concerned restarting the process and reinstalling CF root will wipe even that data.

All files on my desktop ready to go.

First of all it will not wipe any data and even if it did it would not wipe your backup as it is stored on a different part of the phone.
Extract the KG3 cf root zip twice, you should be left with a file called zImage. Copy this to your phone memory. Go into CWM app, use the flash kernal option and select the zImage file. Your phone will reboot and flash the kernal itself. When the phone has rebooted you should be running KG3 kernal (you can check in "about phone" Kernal version). Now place the villain 2.3 zip on your phone memory and go into the CWM app. Use the flash update option and select the villain 2.3 zip. Your phone will reboot and flash itself. Now your done and should be running villain 2.3.

Brain fart indeed. Just exactly what I did to remove the bastard yellow triangle. Should of known but thanking you once again Steslatt.

All done. Phone says KF2 in baseband version . Thats the official firmware overlay I believe . Its the Kernal verion which reads KG3 etc.

Villain now at 2.3

:D Happy days.

hmm i have a similar question too. i was running KG2 so i flashed the CF root KG2 kernal. now i decided to update to KG3 and i flashed the KG3 kernal (copied the zip file to sd card n flashed using CWM manager) but it shows me PDA:KG2 PHONE:KG3 when i press the *#1234# i had already updated the PHONE to KG3 when trying out villainrom but the PDA is still KG2. when i flashed the frankenstein KG3 package from intratech@XDA i got PHONE and PDA both KG3.

Hmm im running villain 2.3 and mine shows PDA as KG3. Are You sure it wasn't PDA: KG3 and PHONE: KG2? You have to flash the modem (PHONE) separately in Villain rom so if you just flashed villain 2.3 zip the you would have had PDA: KG3 PHONE: KG2.

nope i already restored to my stock firmware for some reasons. and before installing villainrom, i used the .tar file on the villain site to update my phone to KG3 (i read after that i shouldve done that after installing villainrom, not before. lol) so after restoring to stock firmware with CF kernal, i have PDA:KG2 and PHONE:KG3. i then flashed the CF kernal (KG3) but it still shows PDA: KG2 and PHONE:KG3

i just tried it again, same result.. should i flash intratech's frankenstein KG3 and then flash CF-root KG3 kernal?

KF2 baseband is the modem. Flash KG3 modem via odin in the "PHONE" section not "PDA" to update if you wish.

I'm confused :S
What is it you flashed exactly and what firmware are you wanting?

ok. after my little escapade with villainrom, which wasnt successful, i restored back to my stock stock firmware with CF root kernel. at that time, i had PDA:KG2 PHONE:KG3 (AFTER restoring back to stock firmware)

i now wanted to update to KG3 firmware. so i flashed KG3 CF kernel. copied the zImage file to sd card, and flashed kernel via CWM manager. but it still shows my PDA:KG2 and PHONE:KG3

im wondering if my best option now is to flash the entire KG3 firmware from intratech, the frankenstein version.. and then flash CF KG3 kernel on top of that. hope im making sense now :D

CF root only updates your Kernal. So in order to update your Firmware you need to flash the KG3 package from intratech then re-root.

oh right. i knew there was something like that but im a bit confused with the terms.

kernal/pda is same? phone/modem? baseband?

and again, thanks for the quick help, loads of appreciation! :D

In the PDA's from intratech the kernal is included, so when you flash the PDA it also flashes the kernal. However if you flash a kernal separately it does not update the PDA.
Phone = modem
baseband = modem
Kernal version = kernal

oh alright! got it now. thanks. one last question, sorry to keep bothering u with more n more :D but ive read that some people want to reset their flash count? is there any reason for this? my flash count (custom binary download) is at 5 counts now, is there a limit or something? thanks

As far as I know there is no limit. Only reason I could think of is if you send it back for warranty and they see you have flashed custom firmware they might refuse to fix it?? Then again why would they have a download mode in the first place if it did void warranty? Im not sure.

In Odin:

PDA = kernel and/or firmware, depending on what's included in the package
PHONE = modem

In About phone on handset:

Baseband version = modem
Kernel version = kernel
Build number = firmware

Beware also that different carriers have used similar version numbering for different updates. There are two KG1 firmwares/kernels available for example, one which is 2.3.3 and the other 2.3.4.
