Upgrading to 2.1 Tutorial

None taken. This thread should probably be locked since it's now out of date. We can just use this thread as a reference when the next leaked version comes out.

Someone has probably answered this question before but I have 2.1 v2 on my phone and haven't received the official update yet but when i do receive it can I just download it and everything will be fine? Will i even get it ota? Thanks

first off relax. It was just a quote from transformers. Second try doing a search for leakers getting the OTA. There are a dozen threads that already cover that topic.

i know there are already many threads i have read some and asked questions in them but no one answers my questions.

and all of those asked questions have answers. The truth is nobody knows for sure, but as not ONE person with a leaked version of 2.1 has received the OTA, I would say that speaks loudly enough. Some people just choose to turn a deaf ear it. (or a blind eye as it were) maybe they will change the bootloader so that leakers will get the ota, maybe they will make it a download for leakers. No one (especially verizon customer support as it seems) knows.

well i did what you said and even though the info didnt match up i think it worked. i ca get every app from the market and i havent seen any bug yet.... thanks alot

What do you do if your on a leak now v2 to be excat.....do I still up grade the same for this v3 leak?

You shouldn't have any problem upgrading the same way to Version 3 Leak.

Also, y'all are finding it difficult to get the Official 2.1 OS, simply go to a Verizon store (not an Authorized dealer) and they should be more than happy help you upgrade to the 2.1 OS. If they say you have voided your warranty; don't get upset. You knew this could happen. But no worries, most of us take care of our Droids like they were babies. lol So suck it up and get the 2.1 OS and enjoy it!

I myself just switched carries from Verizon Wireless to Sprint with the HTC EVO 4G. Excellent phone. Can't tell you how much I have missed the Android OS.

I just got an Eris and the amount of information about 2.1 and how to update to 2.1 etc etc is overwhelming to say the least. Official releases, rooting, leaks, OTA, 2.2 never coming to the Eris because it was released way back in the ancient days of November 2009.... seriously, wtf. I just want to know what the most 'official' way of updating to 2.1 is. Mine says the firmware version is 1.5 but System Updates says my system is currently up to date. I guess I'm just asking what's the most official way to update the eris to 2.1, although is there really no way to do it that doesn't void the warranty? What about voiding the monthly insurance I have on it through verizon? What if I decide to exchange the Eris after updating to 2.1?

Also, is pinch-and-zoom in stuff like Google Maps supported by the latest official version? If not, seems kinda bizarre that something like that wouldn't be standard on an android phone (or any touchscreen smartphone) by now.

Welcome to the forums! If you want the official 2.1 there is only one way to get it. Over The Air. Try doing a factory data reset on your phone. This should trigger the download for the update.

Thanks. I assume that would obliterate my apps and contacts, but that shouldnt' have any other kind of negative or unwanted effect should it? voiding the warranty or anything crazy like that? just wanna make sure.

Have a read in here, first, if you have the time, Elvis:

http://androidforums.com/htc-droid-eris/80233-factory-data-reset-option.html

It returns the device to the state it was in at the point of purchase. Back up your apps, etc.

Warranty is untouched.

the ota will wipe your stuff anyway (so will downloading and flashing any of the other 2.1 options) and not it doesn't void your warranty. Anything that is a built in option in your phone is safe and acceptable for you to do to your phone.

Well I just reset my phone and it's the exact same....v1.5, system is "up to date".

What's going on here?

Also, is it maybe for whatever reason a good idea to install an OS update with as few apps on your phone as possible? Just to make it as "clean" an install as possible?

-edit- lol nevermind, must not have been paying attention when I read the last reply. so the update wipes your phone clean huh?

1. If I take it to a Verizon store and they update it to 2.1, would it really be the official update, and would it be as "clean" of an install as an OTA? How would they install it?

2. Why would that void the warranty? It's the official release isn't it?

3. Which version of 2.1 would they give me?

4. What would happen if I took it to an official Verizon store and told them it won't update to the latest official version of Android?

5. Why the hell is my phone not updating to 2.1? This is really frustrating and I'm baffled as to how it could be this difficult to get an official update to a cellphone. To be honest so far I've not been thrilled with the verizon experience.

Q) If I take it to a Verizon store and they update it to 2.1, would it really be the official update, and would it be as "clean" of an install as an OTA? How would they install it?
A) Yep. If Verizon updates your phone to 2.1, it WILL be the Official OTC (over the computer) update instead of you having to download it yourself. They'll plug it into their system and update it.

Q) Why would that void the warranty? It's the official release isn't it?
A) If you take it to Verizon, it will NOT void your warranty. Unless you used a Leaked version prior to Verizon updating it. (My previous response to adam29617 was if he downloaded a Leaked Version. He would Void it. Not Verizon updating it)

Q) Which version of 2.1 would they give me?
A) You'll get the HTC/SENSE version. NOT any of the leaked versions. It will not have any bugs that most of them carry and it will not be altered by NON/HTC-Verizon people.

Q) What would happen if I took it to an official Verizon store and told them it won't update to the latest official version of Android?
A) There should not be any reason it wouldn't. Unless you hacked it with one of the Leaked versions listed on the threads. If you do have a Leaked version, they'll know (if it's a smart Verizon tech) and they'll immediately Void your warranty and lose insurance capabilities on the device.

Q) Why the hell is my phone not updating to 2.1? This is really frustrating and I'm baffled as to how it could be this difficult to get an official update to a cellphone. To be honest so far I've not been thrilled with the verizon experience.
A) It's a simple as a glitch in the phone, the network, the region you are in, or Verizon it'self. Any number of reasons. But if you take it to Verizon, they'll update it for you with no cost to you.

Verizon isn't the best out there as far as Customer Service (of course, depending who you speak to). But hunker-down and deal with them for the 2.1 and let it be after that.

After I switched to Sprint, my wife got the HTC HERO and couldn't get the 2.1 update to download. So we took it to the Sprint store and they downloaded it for her within 30 minutes and set it up for her and everything (I wish they wouldn't set the phones up, it's annoying).

Well thanks for the help guys, but I took the Eris to a Verizon corporate store (where they called tech support) and to the Best Buy where I got it and nobody could do anything about it. They think that the servers may just not be sending out the update anymore because they assume all new Erises (Eris's?) have 2.1 already. Nothing they could do and it's discontinued so I couldn't get a new one. Just went with a Moto Droid.

Oh well. I wasn't too encouraged by all the 2.1 horror stories anyway and I definitely wanted some of the 2.1 features. Thanks anyway, fellas. :)
