Upgrading to 2.1 Tutorial

How would we tell?

Software version says:
Firmware version 2.1
Baseband: 2.41.04.02.02
Kernel: 2.6.59-5cf233c2 htc-kernel@and18-2#1

I have been having problems with my signal strength ever since I updated. I checked all the info on my phone to make sure I got the right version of the leak however this is the first piece of conflicting info I've gotten. Everything above matches except for my kernel which is 2.6.29-564a4a15 htc-kernel@and18-2#1. I don't know if this is the cause of my problem because I don't know what this info means. My wife's Eris is still on 1.5 and she has twice the signal strength. (What I used to have in 1.5). I have also tried many things suggested by the bugs thread such as the airplane mode fix and I have tried multiple hard resets and tower updates with no luck so far. Any suggestions would be great! I really don't want to regret taking the plunge early but oh well.

Does everyone that upgrades root the phone also? I Don't think I plan on messing with that but if it is beneficial i'll do it.

What is the difference between rooting 2.1 and the leaked version of 2.1? I see a thread on rooting the phone to 2.1 that appears much more complicated than installing this leaked version of 2.1. I am just wondering what the pros and cons to each are and why they are different.

I can not get this to work. I know it seems simple, but every time I download the file it says it is corrupt. I have tried it through my phone, 3 different computers, in firefox, chrome and IE.

Any suggestions or help would be great.

Can someone possibly email me the downloaded file?

Thanks in advance!

root gives you more access to the system as a whole. if you look at the all things root thread in the root board it will explain all these things for you.
if you install the leak, you cannot root and you cannot rollback to 1.5
if you install root, you have more access to the system, your able to delete built in apps, you can install custom roms.. the list goes on. plus if you dont like it there are instructions on how to go back to 1.5.

@stick_man09 what you need to look at is your signal strength if it is between -73 dBm to -94 dBm then you are fine if it is -95 dBm to -125 dBm then that is to worry about i have the same trouble on my eris 2.1 v2 but the signal strength is fine compared it with my other eris still running stock 1.5

What are the advantages of this leak method, vs the root method? So far as I can tell the leak method seems much easier to do, but the root method while complicated, still allows you to go back to 1.5, which seems like a good thing if anything goes wrong with your phone or you need to take it to verizon or send it back to htc.
What else am I missing? Any other differences? Advantages/disadvantages of one method vs the other?

Also wondering if either of these versions of 2.1 have HTC's Sense UI

I have a problem. I have low signal strength also. I downloaded one of the files but dont know which one I have. I dont know if I can root or not.

The same way you did the original leak, and yes you will have to start over.

Make sure you enter all your phone contacts into your gmail contacts in gmail, that way you are always covered if you want to hard reset or update.

None of the leaked 2.1's are currently rootable. :(

then why is it that I see 2.1 root links?
the files are all the same. All the same name. I dont know which one I have and which one I need to have the latest. Is anyone in Knoxville TN on this forum wanna meet up and help me fix this?

Where can I find the newest link? I thought I had it. Will someone post it again please?
Also, is the .4 rootable?

On page one of this thread from the OP posted a link to download v2, but it is not rootable at this time.

then why is it that I see 2.1 root links?

From what I understand, you have to be on 1.5 to move to 2.1 root. If I am wrong I am sure someone will correct me, but I believe you have to root while still in 1.5 and then you can load custom roms from there in which there are 2.1 roms available. Devs have not been able find a way to root the leaked 2.1 rom yet.

Yep, that's it. Bottom line is that if you want to run a rooted 2.1 ROM, at least for now you need to do the root from 1.5. Don't upgrade to the 2.1 leak if you want root!

thank you for the replies. I upgraded FIRST. I will try and downgrade THEN root, THEN reupgrade and see if that works.
I used the OPs link first and the system info I have is posted a couple replies up. It is xxx.1, not .4, but I will try again.

most likely you will still have the low signal problem you should try the *228 option 1 and 2 if that does not help try this
FIRST download the prl from the attachment or from http://www.fileden.com/files/2010/4/14/2827506//51425m.prl and unzip it to your sdcard

1: dial ##775 and press call
2: password is 000000
3: click Update PRL
4: have the PRL file on the root of the SD folder
5: be sure and click the prl you want to update underneath the OK/CANCEL button (minimize the keyboard since it hides the prl info when maximized)
6: press OK
7: press Menu / Commit changes
8: phone restarts.
