Upgrading to 2.1 Tutorial

well fiddlesticks.....lol.
can i at least upgrade to the .4 from the OPs first link?

Absolutely, just make sure to delete the current zip file on your sd card and follow the instructions on page one of this thread. It also doesn't mean you won't get to root your phone eventually. I'm sure the devs will find a way.

most likely you will still have the low signal problem you should try the *228 option 1 and 2 if that does not help try this
FIRST download the prl from the attachment or from http://www.fileden.com/files/2010/4/14/2827506//51425m.prl and unzip it to your sdcard

1: dial ##775 and press call
2: password is 000000
3: click Update PRL
4: have the PRL file on the root of the SD folder
5: be sure and click the prl you want to update underneath the OK/CANCEL button (minimize the keyboard since it hides the prl info when maximized)
6: press OK
7: press Menu / Commit changes
8: phone restarts.
Is this for the problem with the Eris sometimes not haveing any signal bars but still able to deliver sms and calls most of the time.

I say thios because my Eris will indicate that it does not have a signal. However, must of the times I am able to send and recieve call and text. Still running 1.5.

So will this link help my issue.

Just wanted to say that over the last week, my 1.5 Eris has really been getting on my nerves. All I have done to it is add a Gmail and MobileMe account since I got the thing at release. Downloaded some apps. Nothing else, and lately, it started running like a sluggish piece of crap. I reset, rebooted, etc.

Tonight, I had enough. I finally came to this thread, thought "What the hell...it bricks..new phone." Hooked it to my Mac, mounted the SD after I wiped it clean, put the file on there, unmounted, reset, and...well...WORKED AWESOME!

My phone is like a brand new phone. Fast, responsive, and so far, no bugs. I really can't imagine more bugs and studders than the 1.5 I was running on. Thanks guys!

Josh

thanks guys. I got the latest update. xx.4
All is good. no root, but it is faster than my previous .1 version.

I'm glad everything went well for you. IMO the v2 leak has been the best version running on my Eris even over 1.5. I was having lots of HTC force closes in 1.5 and I haven't seen a single FC since going to 2.1 v2. I'm really happy with it.

Well, I upgraded last night to 2.1 and these instructions were SOOOOOO easy to follow. It took a total of maybe 10 minutes from start to finish.

Now I have a desk clock screen, a navigation screen, and FREE turn-by-turn voice navigation!!! YAAAAAAYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY!!!!! I'm so glad I didn't wait for the OTA upgrade!!!!

There's no way in hell you could talk me into installing an OS on my phone that could have been made by some freak with some diabolical plan and far too much time on his hands.

Haven't you people ever heard of things like keyloggers and malware? Just because you don't see them doesn't mean they aren't running.

BE PATIENT!!!

Wait for the official OTA update. It's not THAT big of a deal that you need to have it now and risk bricking your phone over it. SHEESH!!!!!

From what I understand, you have to be on 1.5 to move to 2.1 root. If I am wrong I am sure someone will correct me, but I believe you have to root while still in 1.5 and then you can load custom roms from there in which there are 2.1 roms available. Devs have not been able find a way to root the leaked 2.1 rom yet.

Then why would I want to install this leak version instead of the root version? Both methods get you the same 2.1 right? But one lets you root, and be able to go back to 1.5 if you should need to, that all sounds like it is better. I missing something obvious about this leak version?

Ok, I have tried to do this update more times than I'd like to mention. I downloaded the correct file showing the correct and exact MB (103). Moved the zip file directly to my sd card (lowest level) and when I go to reboot the phone is still showing the old version.

It seems my phone just doesn't want to accept this new version. I did EXACTLY what the tuturial said to do. I even went as far as a hard reset and wiping out all the data I had on my SD card. You guys have any Ideas on what I may have missed?

No you're not missing anything but some people either didn't want to root or like in my case upgraded to the first leak before root was available. If being rooted or wanting the ability to go back to 1.5 are important to you then I say go the root route. They have a similar thread over on All things root section.

It will show the old one while searching for the zip file. It will take a minute or two and then you will need to hit the trackball to say OK to updating. I don't remember the exact message it gives but it does take a little bit of time.

Wow so are you saying you don't install apps? Because the same people that helped get v1 going are the same people who write apps for the phones.

Exactly! And especially by now, the current 2.1 builds have been used far more extensively than the vast majority of the apps in the Market.

All the ridiculous, anti-update FUD around here got seriously old a long time ago.

I know this probably gets annoying have all these newbies asking questions but before I go ahead a do this update I want to know if I use the newest 2.1 version will I lose my contacts and all my applications? And if that's the case, can I restore them with WaveSecure?

Yes it will wipe the phone. I don't believe Wave Secure will backup apps. If you use google for contacts you won't need to worry about that. Wave Secure will work for SMS and call logs but I beleive you can find a backup program on the market that will back everything for you in one app. I used My Backup I think I read where others used Astro. But check the market for backup apps.

Just completed the v2 2.1 update. AWESOME tutorial, no issues whatsoever. Phone is much more responsive and has more features, lovin' it!

I had it sitting with the 3 droid boarders for about 20 mins. It couldn't take that long can it? Oh and while doing this the phone was unmounted.
