Upgrading to 2.1 Tutorial

When you get to that point where it says it's reading PB00IMG.ZIP, have you tried pushing the trackball button?

Yes I have and nothing happens. It only lets me HBOOT and REBOOT after hitting the power button.

Is there an app or a program for our phones to read zip files, word docz, excel etc. I ask this because I Notice when I recieve some word or excel docs through email, instead of it allowing me to open directly it asks to store in my sd card first. After that I don't know how to open it to view. So Im thinking maybe for some reason there is a program or app that will allow my sd card to be read all the way. Thoughts suggestions!!

if you install the 2.1 leak does is void your warranty through verizion and even if you have the extended one?

No. It's just like installing a new OS on your computer, it's software. Now if it were Hardware, it would void your extended warranty.

So I load the PBOOIMG to the root of my sd card and then I power off the phone and let it sit a minute. I then power it on with the send button and the power button and it takes me to this.

yeah i guess so, if you figure it out please let me know

Ok, I finally got mine to work. All I did different was use another computer. I DL'd the file onto my wifes laptop and also moved the file from her desktop to my mounted phone. Performed the on/off sequence and there it was..... a status bar on the upper right hand side of the screen.

I don't know why it didn't work on my own laptop. It's possible it didn't complete the entire DL.

Well, I hope this work for you. Let me know.

I just want to give a thank you to all of the people that made this possible! I love the new version of 2.1 and if it were not for this site and this post I would have never had the new OS Thank You!

OK, please excuse the dense response, but how do i find the file to copy to my desk top?

I have connected my phone to my computer through the USB cable. On my windows explorer it now shows a new "Removable Disk (F:)" but when i click on that drive it tells me to insert a disk into drive F....

what am i doing wrong?

my patience has grown weary waiting for an OTA to 2.1 so i thought i would take a shot at the new 2.1 v.3....

*** PROBLEM SOLVED ***

ok i worked it out...upgrade went well...now let the playtime commence...

I was wondering before I try this with the new v3 leak. In the guide at the beginning of this thread it has you logging back into google, then doing *228 1 & 2 at different points. My question is, I have seen on other sites where they just say to drag the file onto the sd card and the reboot using the vol down and pwr button and that's it. They never mention about logging back into google or even doing a factory reset of any sort. Any ideas on this. Never did this before so I just want to make sure everything goes ok and I don't brick the phone. Below is an example of a site that i saw about simply the doing the sd card and rebooting.

How to Root the HTC Droid Eris and install Android 2.1 – SoftSailor

Ditto, 1.5 was so slow i could not take it anymore. Performing update to 2.1 v3 leaked version now...

Just wanted to say that over the last week, my 1.5 Eris has really been getting on my nerves. All I have done to it is add a Gmail and MobileMe account since I got the thing at release. Downloaded some apps. Nothing else, and lately, it started running like a sluggish piece of crap. I reset, rebooted, etc.

Tonight, I had enough. I finally came to this thread, thought "What the hell...it bricks..new phone." Hooked it to my Mac, mounted the SD after I wiped it clean, put the file on there, unmounted, reset, and...well...WORKED AWESOME!

My phone is like a brand new phone. Fast, responsive, and so far, no bugs. I really can't imagine more bugs and studders than the 1.5 I was running on. Thanks guys!

Josh

Was on the phone with a Verizon rep earlier this week. He had no idea of when 2.1 is coming to the Eris. He actually suggested that I go out on the Net and get it! So, here I am. Things like this usually turn into a disaster for me. So, I downloaded it last night and just left it on my desktop, ominously staring at me. Got up this morning and decided to take the plunge into certain, total disaster. Followed the directions to the letter and....................I NOW HAVE 2.1 running flawlessly on my phone.
If I can do it without screwing it up, so can anyone. THANK YOU to all who made this possible and especially to the GREAT install instructions!

Well I took the plunge and did it. My setup was a little different instead of using the trackball to update it asked me to use the vol up instead...i followed the directions...did everything else and now I have 2.1...WOOHOO

so is this the only way i can update to android 2.1?
whats the difference between this and 1.5?

Unless you're comfortable rooting your phone, then this is your only option right now if you want 2.1.

The main addition is Google Navigation, smoother interface, and access to some other apps. There are a few bugs since this isn't an official release of 2.1.

Browse these 2.1 threads and you'll find your answers. The root information is in a subforum at the top "all things root".

Just wanted to say I finally did this, followed the instructions, and it works beautifully. So much faster and the navigation makes it worth it alone. There are a couple little buggy things but overall I'm so happy, so thank you!

what kind of buggy things? i just got the eris with 1.5 on wednesday. and i dont kno what i should do

IMPORTANT UPDATE: 04/03/10

I had to make a choice between my Droid Eris and purchasing a vehicle for the future. Of course, the vehicle won; so I no longer have the Eris *pout*. I hope everyone has fun with the future updates and conversations regarding the Eris and 2.x updates. I thank everyone that has helped me out and the 50+ who thanked for this Thread.
